Am I the first to realize this is page 404?
so why don't any major manufacturers make a processor on an alternate architecture that is as fast as a modern x86 processor and doesn't cost an arm and a leg and maybe a testicle?
Because there's 30 years of pre-existing programs that are designed for the x86. ARM is the biggest disruption to x86 in years (since Apple went Intel), and it's only chewing the lowest end. There's pretty much no way you'll get it replaced on the desktop (unless Linux suddenly conquers Windows).
So guess what I did today.
I've been getting tired, tweaking balance on Project Horizon. It's long and slow work. So I decided to do something about one of my other game ideas.
The idea is basically "steampunk shmup browser game". It's pure Javascript and HTML. No Flash whatsoever (and there was much rejoicing)
Since I never really did much with Javascript, I wasn't actually sure it would be able to do it playably. I'm happy to report that it runs just fine, constant 60fps, until you get about 1200 objects on screen. Since I plan to make the exact opposite of a bullet hell shmup, I don't think that will be a problem.
It took about an hour and a half, including figuring out how to do timing loops in Javascript and gameplay testing. 200 lines of code, and it's playable. Has scoring, a difficulty curve (enemy spawn rates and fire rates increase over time) and a timer.
It's not really how I actually want the gameplay yet, but it's a basic proof-of-concept to say both "this game will work with this technology" and "this game will be fun".
If anyone wants to give it a shot, here's the first version. Don't judge too harshly - that's pre-pre-alpha stuff. The graphics and colors are placeholders, the gameplay is rough and unfinished, and there's more features missing than existing. But hey, not bad for an hour of coding.
I'm going to keep fiddling with it for a while, maybe get it playing how I actually want it. I'm actually thinking it may become my "buy GMan a new computer" fundraiser project - it's pretty much perfect for putting on Facebook/G+ and all the app stores, and it's small enough that I could feasibly actually finish it.
Anyways, that's my current mini-project to give me a short break from tedious testing and tweaking. Although I do have "Capstone Project" next semester, and this would be good for that as well. Hmmm...
make the enemy bullets faster and larger, they currently are hard to spot and move so slow you can run into one long after the enemy that fired is dead.

A company with the funding that Microsoft has could really make huge leaps in emulation, but they're just not trying to hit that field.

nobody cares shut up
other than "it's not profitable" because that's a poor excuse to not advance consumer-grade computing by 20 years in just 4

It's supposed to be steampunk - artillery shells, not lasers. I'll probably make them bigger, though.

Microsoft can't even make a version of Windows that will flawlessly run everything that the previous version could run (7 running Vista apps doesn't count - 7 is just Vista SP2). And that's without dealing with different architectures - x86 is very difficult to emulate with any speed.

Completely changing the subject:

Yes, that's real.
Is it possible to get OpenOffice documents completely working with Windows Word/Excel?
When I write simple text it's fine, but when I use stuff as columns it all get messed up
Just throwing out something for the thread, in high school my Computer teacher asked everyone to check to see if they had a "fox fire" program on their computers, because it was a virus made by hackers.
Once our school had some kind of ~online video conference~ and my teacher have tried to watch it with no Flash installed
"You can't install those viruses, but I need to get it working"
game...
Change the color of the "bullets"? or the whole background color. The bullets blend in too well and are hard to notice when looking half-way up the screen. (at least for me, disagree if not)

In all fairness, there might have been a program created to simulate Firefox called foxfire that was in fact a virus.

I did a search for Foxfire Virus and got this great example of content.
Hi Larry,
Foxfire is a great browser, but, like any other browser, if you're not careful - a virus could get you. No matter which browser you use, you should have an antivirus program installed, update it once a week and run a virus scan after updating.
Just thought of something.
What if games get so detailed that we end up using tesselation on bullets? Sounds incredibly retarded but if we had the resources to do so easily, why not?

What I mean by that is when bullets fly by your face, not just like ammo boxes. Live bullets. Yes, pointless.

Considering I remember when using a mesh instead of sprites for ammo boxes was considered "pointless", I think eventually we'll get there. Although maybe not tessellation - voxels may be better, if they can get the whole physics thing done.
Every time I hear Foxfire, I think of Foxfire rockets.
I think of this

I like to hurt people when they consider voxel based games will look like minecraft but higher density of voxels. If I remember correctly Cryengine uses voxels for terrain destruction, deformation, sometimes caves and Frostbite uses it for terrain destruction, also.
voxels are used to some extent in pretty much any engine with any sort of dynamic terrain
Anyone got their hands on a Zosma yet? Can't find any in the UK.
say that to my face fucker not online see what happens

No, you'll hit me. :(
Possibly.

CE2 doesn't feature terrain deformation. Voxels ARE used for making caves however, they look just as good as any other terrain once you occlude them properly (otherwise light seeps in).
My system boots in about 40 seconds but I should clock it.
Don't you have an SSD?
Mine has like 5 seconds of POST and then windows 7 boot s in about 12 seconds :D
Thinking about switching to Chrome on my desktop here... Firefox is starting to feel... Old. And I use Chrome on my netbook and I like it.
Help me decide whether to switch or stay.
Unbiased pros/cons of switching, please. I don't want to start a browser war.
Mainly the only addons I use are AdBlock Plus (which I know Chrome has) and NoScript. That's pretty much it.
Well, I find Chrome to be nicer, but I don't really use extensions and that alike, so if you're into that sort of thing, I guess you should stick to FF as it seems to have better support for such.
