Arm processors use less power and therefore have a low tdp on average. The arm architecture has for the most part has been focused on low power usage ever since the focus change to embedded systems, which has led to the side goal of low heat output due to lack of cooling abilities. The thing is (for what I know) Arm processors are not much of a match clock for clock with their x86 opponents. An Arm based system is very viable for web browsing and some hd video and music, but for content generation i.e. making videos, photoshop, games, etc. they are underpowered. Though seeing as I don't even need much more than my i3 laptop except for gaming now, Arm can have a really strong future in low power and low priced systems. I personally think that after the release of WIndows 8 and the the rewriting of popular programs for Arm compatibility, the Arm architecture will most likely dominate the laptop and low end pc markets. I don't see any reason why someone wouldn't want a decently fast system capable of hd video with on-die decoders that can easily last multiple days on a single charge.
Is a Tegra 3 (4 cores, 1.3GHz) faster than a single core 1.6GHz atom? I certainly hope it is because I'm upgrading from a netbook to a Transformer Prime soon :smug: [editline]29th November 2011[/editline] Also, go Samsung: We're not the only ones thinking that Apple fanboys are hipsters :v:
I hope this doesn't mean Intel is going to raise their prices
They'll raise them, probably enough that someone else enters the market for mainstream desktop processors. VIA, as mentioned before, might move from netbook-grade low-TDP processors up towards Real Mens' CPUs. They've always had some interesting ideas - they could probably spit out a 20-core processor for the price of an i7, which could be good for servers, and don't forget that the entire Core series came from a low-TDP, old-style design (the Pentium M). They may be a legit competitor, if they can get a good marketing and support infrastructure set up. IBM may make a move, as well. They have decades of experience with POWER, have some foundries of their own, and are big enough that they could actually afford a patent war with Intel. Plus, if AMD drops out and Intel jacks up their prices, IBM starts losing money on their x86 servers. Freescale is also a potential competitor. They have tons of foundries, and have experience with ARM and Power. They're a long shot, but not impossible. They could pull a NexGen-like move, make a fast ARM-like core with an attached x86->ARM hardware translator. It would be a cheap way to enter the market fast. There's also the possibility that AMD will just split off their desktop group, just as they split off their chip fabs to become GlobalFoundries. In which case there's no telling what will happen.
Well fuck: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1143975
Shit. Although not at the top of the performance, they had the best budget CPU's.
Shit, I want ARM to fuck over x86 so bad. Just need 64-bit on them instead of that LPAE shit and I haven't heard how the virtualization extensions are. Some hardware-accelerated encryption on the same chip would be nice too.
Shit. Although not at the top of the performance, they had the best budget CPU's.
Nothing could beat the 2500k, really. If you ask me the 2500k was p damn cheap.
Just realized there's still dial-up services up and running in America. Some on toll-free numbers, and I have Google Voice. Now I just need to find a software modem, they exist, I've heard of them.
Nothing could beat the 2500k, really. If you ask me the 2500k was p damn cheap.
I got mine for $120 with a free motherboard. Best purchase I have made in a long time.
so apparently the school's filter was down yesterday i didn't notice :v:
Nothing could beat the 2500k, really. If you ask me the 2500k was p damn cheap.
You can't put together a fair gaming PC for under $600 with a 2500k.
You can't put together a fair gaming PC for under $600 with a 2500k.
That's why you don't get the 2500k from Newegg, you can get them cheaper elsewhere like Micro Center if you're in the US.
That's why you don't get the 2500k from Newegg, you can get them cheaper elsewhere like Micro Center if you're in the US.
I wasn't going from Newegg. I'm going from prices in AUD.
Installing XP in VM. VM, so it naturally provides the sound via generic audio drivers that the OS already has. I can't remember when I've last heard the XP install tune.
Nothing could beat the 2500k, really. If you ask me the 2500k was p damn cheap.
Sure, but the old Phenoms were... <sunglasses pull> phenomenal. Seriously - a cheap Phenom X3 or X4 could kick a Core 2's ass. Even the later X6s were competitive. It's usually that way - there's almost always one company that's a clear winner for a generation: Am486 > i486 (they were pretty much identical, but AMD made them at far higher clocks than Intel) Pentium > K5 ~ Cyrix 6x86 K6 ~ Pentium II Pentium III > Athlon Athlon 64 > Pentium IV early Phenom II > Core 2 late Phenom II ~ Core i* Sandy Bridge > Bulldozer
Everyone should just set up a SSH tunnel directly when logging into a school pc
I do, I built my home server out of my spare AMD parts. A little Athlon x64 and 2GB of ram to keep it happy. It really is indispensible when you forget a flash drive to keep files on.
Everyone should just set up a SSH tunnel directly when logging into a school pc
This is what I do. Works just fine.
only losers actually use the school's internet
Everyone should just set up a SSH tunnel directly when logging into a school pc
I would, though the filter blocks it, even on non-standard ports. I end up tethering to my phone for a few basic things (Reddit mostly). It's a shame to hear about AMD. I hope they keep improving their lower-end stuff, the APU stuff and the more inexpensive chips are pretty nice. Then again, it's possible that Intel could release a line of inexpensive CPUs that completely obliterate AMD's offerings.

Hey ya'll computer people http://annarbor.craigslist.org/sys/2680129231.html is this used thing decent because I can't be arsed to build my own computer but I need something decent I don't game much and all it'd have to do is last maybe 3 years or so but still run things at like, low-medium
Yay, my IBM now knows how the internets work. Atleast I have FTP running for now. SSH is next.

The ultimate insult.
Instead of saying "Well fuck you, too" I'd say this
