It's based off the feedback and the testing done through cosmic panda. I will say that the new youtube analytics is fucking amazing
This looks nothing like that cosmic panda I was using. That looked great, this is shit.
I had a pretty good idea, so I popped into chat and typed it up...but since chat is pretty dead, i'm gonna post it here as well. John Booth: So the base of the program would be to create a database, of sorts, of your own text-to-speech voice. John Booth: You would input text every now and then. If it had been entered before, it recognizes it. John Booth: But if it hasn John Booth: But if it hasn't, it would say "I don't know this word. Can you say it?" John Booth: Then it would prompt you to say it to the mic, and you would press a stop button once you say it. John Booth: And it would just grow and grow, making more and more words "text-to-speech" able. John Booth: This would all be local, as well, so no one could just record "FUCK" for a ton of words and force people to use that. John Booth: I would use that for books, so I could read a few words now and then. John Booth: And some sort of voice detection, so it would chop off most of the "dead space" Does it seem stupid at all?
Yes. For one, that's a LOT of words. Average person will use about a thousand unique words per day. Larger dictionaries have over half a million words; some speculate there are more than one million words in the English language. Add any bits of other languages in common use (me gusta, sayanora, coup d'etat, et cetera), and you're looking at a LOT of potential words. Second, look at how many variants you have to deal with. Take the word "take": take takes taking took taken You really think someone will put up with that? You can't even get most people to go through all ~50 phonemes used in English! Finally, that still won't properly stress and space the words. You'd need some actual language processing to do that, and at that point, you may as well do some phoneme parsing and synthesize the actual words. Edit: Just to read the above section of my post, you'd need just over one hundred words recorded (one hundred sixteen if you include this edit). Extrapolate.

Oh well. An idea it was, stupid at that. [editline]1st December 2011[/editline] But I bet something like this could be implemented with children's books, maybe with some sort of arduino controller? If it's not already, of course.

That's a much smaller amount of data to store, and much more flexible. Say you're reading something that invents words ("teraport" or "AnthroPC" or "spacemonauts" or "malamentau"). With your system, you'd have to way and record each. A phoneme-based system would only need a new sound for the really weird stuff (Ĥ, for example), and would be able to guess how to pronounce the rest. It may mess up (I imagine many phoneme-based systems mispronounce "Recettear"; then again, I had to look up the Japanese title to figure it out), but even then, you can usually guess what it means. Syllables may be harder - you're looking at a couple hundred, maybe a thousand, permutations of phonemes - but would probably sound more natural.

Would you like to take this to the PM's to work it into an actual program, or let it go as an idea?

Esperanto is easy. German and Russian and Spanish are a bit trickier, French tougher still. English, Chinese, and several of the Bantu languages are downright impossible. It's tough enough just for humans - anglophones have nearly twice the rate of dyslexia or other language-related mental disorders, compared to the average.
Yeah so my motherboard that got delayed by UPS finally showed up. OH MY GOD THIS IS GREAT. It feels so damn fast compared to my Core 2 Duo 4Ghz system, going to see if anyone around me will buy it or turn it into a server. I didn't realize how much I was bottlenecking my graphics card, in unreal engine 3 based games my fps would be a respectable 40-80fps most of the time, in the same game at the same settings I am now getting 200fps with 120fps in heavy action. I also turned off virtual memory now that I have 16GB of ram, the speed difference makes me really find the cost worth it. $150 i5 2500k from Microcenter, $165 ASRock P67 Extreme6 from newegg, $70 for $16GB of DDR3-1600, Asus Xonar DG for $25 and a $28 Hyper 212+. It made for a nice upgrade and I only had to install network drivers for windows to get the rest of the correct, and reactivating windows wasn't a problem like it was back on XP. Skyrim is also so much better fps wise. I need to ween myself from that though, I held out through the holidays then I gave in. So many side quests.

So we have an ad in school. Aids doesnt choose. YOU do. Written in Comic Sans.

Someone I know, in desperation to 'jailbreak' his PS3, ended up on one of those spam survey sites where he could win a free iPad. He entered his real mobile phone number in...
I fucking hate the newscasters we have today, they think that smartphones are spying on you because of how they register what you press.
I fucking hate the newscasters we have today, they think that smartphones are spying on you because of how they register what you press.
Um yeah, that is spying.
Am I the only person that likes the new YouTube homepage? The only thing that I really dislike is the "RECOMMENDED" section to the right because it takes up half the god damn page with videos I don't give a shit about. Other than that, I'm loving it.
Um yeah, that is spying.
If it just registers the key so it knows what you press in order to put it into the text box or wherever, how is that spying? It would do it anyway even if they weren't supposedly spying. [editline]2nd December 2011[/editline] God damnit page king.
They're storing what you type and upload that to their database. How is that not spying.
It doesn't upload anything, it just registers, like if you type you're registering a keystroke on anything.
It doesn't upload anything, it just registers, like if you type you're registering a keystroke on anything.
Are you talking about the android and iOS spyware that telco's in the US install on the phones they sell with their contracts? It does upload, or at least, it has the rights to upload.

Now there's something that actually does possibly spy? Cool, makes my other posts look like I'm an idiot now.

Best YouTube layout ever.

If they add both these options then it'll be their best homepage so far, at least IMO.
Carrier IQ. Even Apple has put the spyware on their phones.
Now that doesn't shock me at all.
Now that doesn't shock me at all.
When it first came out that US carriers shipped their android phones with it, apple fanboys kept saying iPhones couldn't have it because apple would never allow it. Two days later it was found on iPhones :v:

I love how everytime YouTube changes something everyone is "no change it back!!!!" but then after a week or two, everyone stops bitching about it and starts to love it. After that, they change it again to something even better and the cycle repeats. I still remember the shitload of videos everyone uploaded bitching when YouTube changed their video format to 16:9, the new channel layout and etc :v:
