I play during lightning storms all the time, as long as you live in a house that isn't a shit hole and is built properly you shouldn't have any problems.
You can be unlucky, it happens, even here in Denmark. I'm not saying he's at risk, but what difference does 20 minutes make? Wasn't there a person just a page or so ago that got his computer cooked?
Can't remember when's the last time my power's been out.
Is getting a mechanical keyboard worth it? I am considering getting one because I am going to have around $100 left for my keyboard for my new build, so my choices are: A: Get a mechanical keyboard B: Get an ordinary keyboard and save the rest for upgrades C: Get an ordinary keyboard and spend the rest on the next Steam sale I plan on doing mostly gaming, but also some typing for schoolwork during the year, so would it be a good idea to get one? If so, what keyboard should I get? EDIT: Also, wouldn't you be fine if your power went out if you had a surge suppressor or something like that? Or would you still be screwed unless you had a battery back up (Or something like that) for it?

I'm posting the question in the thread right now.
Last summer, I needed a few things (New laptop battery, headphones and a 15" LCD to replace my second monitor which was a CRT at the time) and I had my old PC laying around. It had a 3.4 GHz P4, 1.5 GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive with Windows XP and put in an old, chunky case. I had it up for $200 (I needed about $160 or so to cover what I needed) and was getting low offers on Kijiji, so I saw Newegg.ca had that case on sale for around $30. After putting those old parts in a new case, I got at least 3X the offers that I did in the old, shitty case.
Your experience just reminded me of why people buy Macs.
If you have your computer plugged into a surge protector strip, you'll be fine.
Bloody hell why can't Windows give all updates in one big install, I've been updating and then rebooting, logging back in and finding more bloody updates for the past hour or so on my laptop. [editline]15th July 2011[/editline] I wish computer repair was as simple as it is in Stargate Atlantis. Take a tablet, a cable, an alligator clip, attach clip, cable and tablet, tablet tells you what's wrong and then you fix it with one command.

I've been downloading .NET framework 4 security updates for the last bloody 15-30 minutes.
I play during lightning storms all the time, as long as you live in a house that isn't a shit hole and is built properly you shouldn't have any problems.
Don't modern PSU's have OCP, OVT, etc, protection anyways?

Talking about Windows updates: I still haven't installed W7 SP1. Why? Because it takes 10 times to download it, which of the 9 first times the download fails. When it finally downloads and installs, my computer gets stuck in a boot loop. Only way out of it was to do a system restore. Fuck SP1.

I dissabled the entire windows update service and only put it back on when I heared that something urgent needed updating.

I updated to SP1 before it was on Windows Update. Or.. I was using SP1 before it was popular.
My installation disk comes with SP1 preinstalled :v:
Hmm... Need to find a better image then. Don't have access to MSDN anymore. edit: Hmm.. Probably gonna get access to MSDNAA when I start at Uni soon. Maybe I can get something from there.
And then tomorrow he finds out his neighbour is Richard Stallman.
I generally meant "I was the only guy who knew what those things even DID". Which is fine - most people don't need to know the difference between a modem and memory. I did see a couple things that made me regret the stores "employees cannot purchase merchandise" policy. An original copy of FFVIII, for instance. And a rather sweet collection of Nerf guns. I went back a few months after I was fired, just on a whim. Snagged an original in-box copy of Half-Life. So awesome.
(Would have said Torvalds but the dude lives in rather far-away-from-everyone-else type of place, at least what I've seen in a couple of documentaries.)
Uh, Portland, Oregon isn't exactly middle-of-nowhere. That's a bigger city than I live in.
Uh, Portland, Oregon isn't exactly middle-of-nowhere. That's a bigger city than I live in.
I meant more of the general area. All the footage I've seen shows his house in the middle of a forest. But maybe he just has a lot of trees around his house.
About to game during a lightning storm... might regret this.
If the cabling in your house it well done and you have a surge protector, you'll have no problems during a lightning storm. Unlike me, in a 40 years old house with an outdated, recycled electric system.
If there is war, isn't the easyest way to just kill the other country by taking away the power? Or just like, blowing up/shutting down all the places where power can come from. Like, all the power plants, cables from other countries and such. The people will surrender easily then, everything runs from electricity and nothing can be done against it, as the smaller power generators for hopsitals, soldiers and such, can not power a city.

Oh, and FullStreak, we are sadly devoid of Goodwills and Costcos in the Greater Syracuse Area. We suck bro.
