I have now destroyed Windows 7, and replaced it with Crunchbag (Aka Debian) on my netbook.
I feel accomplished, everything works
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
And only 2.5GB harddrive space is used, an that's with various programs installed. Damn.
I thought you were going for Sabayon?
But now you need two drives or a drive twice the size to keep a backup
Why not just go for RAID 10 :v:
RAID, no matter what level, is never a perfect backup solution. Sure, RAID 5 will protect from hardware failure, but what happens if you get a virus? Or just accidentally delete something? RAID will happily just replicate the deleted or damaged filesystem. You need some sort of backup system for that.
yeah I suppose
Speaking of RAID, I set up a server with a pretty good RAID configuration a few days ago for the network security club.
The server was an old one - dual Pentium III Xeons. But I gave it a pretty cool RAID setup:
RAID level 5 (hardware RAID)
5 10,000RPM drives active
2 7,200RPM drives as hot spares (if one active drive fails, it will automatically and instantly begin rebuilding the array on a spare)
Each drive is only 18GB, but the array gets a total capacity of 72GB, and it would take either four sequential hard drive failures or two simultaneous failures to cause data loss. Read performance is on par with RAID 0, although the write performance is lacking (especially random writes).
Oddly, both OpenBSD and Arch refused to install on it. I located a set of Red Hat disks, went ahead and installed that. I'm thinking it'll be a web server of some sort.

Subsonic.

speed freak
why would you need two drives or a drive twice the size to have a backup
spinpoints fall out of the array? :ohdear:
yes they do
excellent drives by themselves though
Subsonic.
Nah, it's supposed to be something practical. There's already a Samba server (using Arch) and a Windows Domain Controller, so I'm thinking either Apache (or maybe lighttpd) or PostgreSQL.

If you're going for a webserver, why not use Nginx?
If you're going for a webserver, why not use Nginx?
What's wrong with the other options? It's a server that's going to get less than a dozen hits a week - it doesn't need to be ultra-high-performance.

Personally I find Nginx easier to set up, but perhaps that's just my experience with it.
What models of spinpoints are we talking here? What years?
I've got two 250gb from 2007 in raid0 as my OS partition, been running it for a few months.

While this could be good, I don't trust microsoft with this.
the company's aims for total cross-platform integration.
I don't care about Windows' rebranding, this is what worries me. Dumbing down an OS just because you want your silly Xbox users to be able to interact with it just isn't right.
Am I the only one that isn't going to be switching to Windows 8 with how it is? It just looks bad...

tiles are optional
Sudden Lockups, Ahoi!
Browsing web on my PC, locked up, mouse didn't move but had power.
Well, alt+tab then ? Nope, locked up.
Temperatures were okay.
OC should be stable.
MBAM quick scan didn't show anything.
When I come back from a trip, I am going to back to last stable OC, Safe Mode full scan.
I am not amused if it is my HDD failing. It is not making any sounds but yeah.
A few days ago, my PC also just restarted, no blue screen, no anything. Temperatures okay.
Wait, you're getting those too? My PC locks up in the same way occasionally for a few seconds and it just started a few weeks ago.
Am I the only one that thinks W8 looks kickass? Besides, it's not like you can't go into a normal desktop interface.
I haven't seen enough difference to want to leave 7 for it. All it really adds is a few UI elements and the tablet interface that I won't use.
Can someone give me a rundown on the significant changes in Windows 8?

God damn it, why is it that every MicroSD Card Reader I've ever used is content? Every. Single. One.
They always do that stupid "Device has malfunctioned" thing, and then come up as unknown device. Help me out here, I need this.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm still at this military school
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
still
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
I can't believe I haven't had any computer access for a month
I feel like I don't come here as much since the FP UI change...
tiles are optional
But desktop virtualization isn't...
[editline]17th July 2011[/editline]
Oh and more Ribbon shit, the new task manager looks terrible, new user controls look fuck awful and Windows Live "Integration".

My build in card reader doesn't function at all. What.
My standard SD card reader chokes on MicroSDs (with the adapter). Regular-size SDs work fine. v:v:v

I think it's just better to wait for more information, Maybe a video showing functions, Those things. Better to wait and know before speculating too much
Found an adapter and a camera that doesn't function as a camera. I now have a MicroSD reader.
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
Now I've gotten a marker and written "MicroSD Muncher" on it. :c00lbert:

They aren't dumbing down an OS to allow "silly xbox users" to be able to use it...
They are creating something designed to interact with multiple aspects of technology... Microsoft now is in the PC, Console, Tablet and cell phone areas of technology.
They want to be able to have perfect interaction between them. Do you have tons of music on your PC that you would like to listen to while playing your Xbox? Well they kind of have something set up to allow that now, but it doesn't always work.
By creating an OS that is DESIGNED to do this from the start, they eliminate small problems like I mentioned above.
I think it is a great idea, because it shows that technology will be a lot smoother in the future and now backwards hacked to try and make shit work.
