My father put some stuff on an external Seagate HD, he accidentally dropped it and all the data became corrupt.

It's a mechanical HDD, they don't exactly respond well to being dropped.
Well forgive me my computer illiteracy.
Update: Went and bought a Samsung 1TB today. I also rang up Seagate and spoke to them, but apparently my drive wasn't affected by the firmware issue (despite being the same model and manufactured around the same time.) Oh well, at least I have all my important code backed up on GitHub.
Send it to some data recovery service?

Nah, as much I as I hate them, that's not Seagates fault. Your dad is just an idiot.

have fun when one of your drives die
I have a Maxtor drive that's been running for 14 years now with no problems :smugdog:
Except noise, but it's just as noisy as it was back in '96.
Oh and just fyi I have only used Seagate and WD drives ever until I built my recent PC. 3 seagates failed in the same machine. Laptop ones, too, and only 500gb. I don't understand why.
