I got that earlier too. Apparently there are 2 homes.
And here I am with my Fascinate, and we just got 2.2. :sigh:
(I'm still in love with it, though.)
If what I hear about it is true, then this is just about the perfect media phone, isn't it?
I have some questions though. Does it have a Wolfson headphone amp like last time? And will it require modding (Voodoo) to have it reach it's potential?
Supercurio (creater of voodoo sound and SGS demi-god) said he thinks it may be a Yamaha one. You can follow his progress with the SGSII here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053978
Don't buy Samsung. They have the worst fucking support for their phones.
I have a Samsung Epic 4G and didn't even get Froyo until earlier this month. It was released almost a year ago.
In short, if you're thinking you're going to get any support at all - you're not.
2.3.4's actually the newest.

Carrier's fault. Not Samsung's.
Samsung's support used to suck a lot before they switched to Android. After they released a phone that was pretty much it.
I hope this comes out in Canada soon

Samsung is horrible at updating their phones.
Samsung is horrible at updating their phones.
And why did the Galaxy S already get the 2.3 update then? Before any HTC or Motorola devices got it?

That doesn't exempt Samsung from their past doings. Sure, it's great, but I wouldn't bet on them from one positive action.

Isn't that what custom ROMs are for?

Probably because Samsung makes the Nexus S. :v:

The Samsung Captivate (AT&T) received its non-OTA Froyo update on February 24th.
The Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile) received its non-OTA Froyo update January 21st.
The Samsung Fascinate (Verizon) just received their OTA Froyo update on April 21st.
The Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint) received its OTA Froyo update on April 21st.
None of them will receive any more updates, and all of them should've shipped with Froyo.
And why did the Galaxy S already get the 2.3 update then? Before any HTC or Motorola devices got it?
Because the Samsung Nexus S is Google's current official "developer phone".

Custom ROMs require a community of people who actually know what they're doing. The entire Samsung Galaxy S line has very few; the Epic 4G in particular has none.
Out of curiosity, do any of you know if Samsung locks down their bootloader? aka no cyangenmod

The Galaxy S's first Froyo firmware is I9000XXJP1 which was released in August 2010. I think it got its OTA update in October. It's true that the carrier versions are getting bad support, but luckily I live in Europe where we get the real Galaxy S and S II.

And that's bullshit and you know it. There are very few phones with more developers than the Galaxy S.
Just look at the firmware list and the kernel list
The "entire Galaxy S line" thing was overexaggeration, but the Epic 4G has virtually no community support whatsoever. We don't even have a working Cyanogenmod port.

Maybe you shouldn't have bought a shitty carrier branded device. It isn't samsung's fault your dumbass carrier still uses CDMA and wanted their own special version of the phone. I'm already on 2.3.3 on an official Samsung rom.
You guys are the idiots who got non i9000 devices. Samsung put the sources for froyo up ages ago and the gingerbread sources are up as well. The only people holding back the updates are your carriers. It isn't samsung's fucking job to make a rom for your custom devices. They make roms for the Galaxy S, that's it.
Here's hoping this beast comes to Bell.
Here's hoping this beast comes to Bell.
Well you could order the European one and set it to the 850mhz band. The Bell Vibrant was literally just the i9000 with an M on the end of the version number.
Hopefully they won't do something dumb like Shooter's carrier(or any carrier/human who uses CDMA) and get some custom version of it.
We have more (major) carriers here in Denmark than you've got in the U.S. it seems.
We have more (major) carriers here in Denmark than you've got in the U.S. it seems.
That's probably a good thing. In Canada and the US the main carriers hold a monopoly on the market which results in higher prices for less features.
Is it worth 800 dollars unlocked? Or should I wait until an American version comes out for 200 and a 2 year contract? I was thinking of getting it on amazon.co.uk and putting it on AT&T.
That's probably a good thing. In Canada and the US the main carriers hold a monopoly on the market which results in higher prices for less features.
I'm saying it's a good thing... And alot of people in the U.S. calls us socialists.
This things screen is impossible to get finger prints on. In the unlikely event you do all you have to do is rub it with your fingers. What is this wizardry?
I heard that his was coming May 2011 for Verizon, and then I heard Q3 2011 for Verizon...anyone else hear anything differnet?
I am just wondering why Verizon would have the Droid Charge if they are also planning to get a Galaxy S 2... that must mean it will not have 4G, or else it would outclass the Charge and therefore be more than 300 dollars.
There's nothing I can do about it. The fees are extraordinarily high, and if I want to buy an unsubsidized version of a phone I still have to deal with the rates.
To make matters worse, AT&T and T-Mobile are merging. We'll soon have two complete monoliths and Sprint, which has its own financial troubles, having put its efforts behind WiMAX, while the other carriers now support LTE.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with two carriers within the next few years.
Verizon has a great spread of 3G, but it is slow and expensive. Their 4G is super fast but capped and also expensive.
AT&T does not even have a real 4G network and their plans are super expensive. They also have frequent problems with dropped calls and coverage, though they do have the fastest 3G.\
Sprint's 4G network is not as fast or reliable as Verizon's, but it does come much cheaper. Their 3G is pretty ok.
T-Mobile does not have the best 3G service or speed, but their "4G" network is actually huge and fast (matching Sprint in some areas). They have the cheapest plans and some good phones.
So I would have to say that Verizon and AT&T are both ripping everyone off
