Posting with Mandriva Spring 2010.
Has its kinks, but they're much more benign than some of the issues I've had with other distros.
Just finished setting up a CentOS VM using LVM on two SCSI disks. I'll see if it works.
[editline]20th November 2010[/editline]
Yay got LVM working. Next step, do it on the server.
that's pretty much my biggest issue with Linux. I ended up building another computer to run Windows on so I could actually do anything decent with audio, without having to hassle with a dualboot.
I've been experimenting with Arch for recording, and I've never had so little trouble in setting up my recording environment. I like to hear what I'm recording as I record, and in Arch I get practically zero latency when listening to my USB interface, unlike Win 7. I'll probably stick to Windows for mixing and mastering though because I'm used to FL studio for that.
fl studio works pretty good in wine in my experience
Neat, I'll have to try it out when I get more comfortable and start using Linux as a primary OS.

Implying that setting one up is difficult in any way.
I am a bit of an opensuse nerd but I am running Ubuntu 10.10 as my main at the moment.

it's not setting it up, it's rebooting whenever I need windows

If all you are wanting windows for is audio then run windows in a VM inside linux. Then job done, no more dual booting.

Fair enough, I'm one of those people who doesn't mind having to do that.
Since I'm here, might as well engage in some tech support question. Minecraft keeps crashing on me for some reason. It always happens when loading a new world. What the dealie-o is going on?
Mind posting the crash log thingy. It might give us a clue on what's going on.

Try running it from the command line and it might give you some sort of backtrace.
Just cd to wherever minecraft.jar is and run:
java -jar minecraft.jar
Then paste the output here.

then latency is an issue. virtual machines simply don't work for audio producers.

This may seem stupid, but if all you use Windows for is audio work, surely it wouldn't be that much of a hassle to DB? You could probably slim down boot times considerably.

the thing is I keep myself on IRC, torrents, etc. got an ftp server on my system that I don't want to drop too. it's too much of a hassle to reboot when I can just have another computer.
Who doesn't have like 5 computers nowadays?
Not a big hassle to have one of them run Windows.
Posting from a fresh Linux Mint 10 installation. Runs beautifully with the latest patched Kernel.

Yes, though sometimes I wish I could find my Windows CD. I miss not having to problem solve when running things and I miss Minecraft.
Both computers are logged in to facepunch, but I'm typing this on the windows one.
Currently on Ubuntu 10.10 using Unity on my netbook, pretty good though does lag very slightly, hope that will be fixed in desktop experience patch.

What do you think of unity? Personally I am not a fan but some people seem to like it.
Yeah, Ubuntu 10.04

Really really bad, I have just switched back to gnome and not a moment too soon.
I'm running Linux on my desktop and laptop and I'm installing a server. Also I'm sshing left and right into one or another.
I should be, but my laptops hard drive has bad sectors and replacing it is not an option.
I'm downloading OpenSUSE 11.3 though (for my new PC), I like the look of it and I want to move away from Ubuntu/Mint.
I'm on my school laptop, can't install linux for another year and a half.. Got ubuntu running on my home PC though
