Baby Throwing Festival Facing Ban
India
A festival in Bijapur district which involves throwing babies from the top of a 9-metre Hindu temple onto a blanket held by revellers is facing a ban after drawing the ire of authorities. Tossing a baby is said to confer a long healthy life.
"As I am new to the district, I did not know about the unusual ritual, which is inhuman and terrifying for babies. I intend to prevent the people from indulging in such acts next time," said deputy commissioner R Shantharaj.
India has a wide range of superstitions and festivals. A ban on a stone-throwing ritual, during which fatalities and injuries are not uncommon, triggered riots earlier this year. Eventually authorities were unable to prevent the event occurring.

They claim not one baby has been seriously injured in that for 500 years now. Let them do what they want, if you ask me. It doesn't really seem too dangerous, regarding how a newborn doesn't even weight a lot.
They claim not one baby has been hurt over the past 500 years of doing this.
Ok I'm no expert but if they have been doing this for 500 years and they think it's OK to do it then all of them got brain damage from the fall when they were babies.
It was tradition to burn people that you thought were witches at one stage, same with religious heretics.
Yes, but people were harmed with that actions.
This particular baby-throwing didn't harm anyone in 500 years. That's a bad comparsion you did there.
i would like to participate in this baby throwing
i'm happy no one threw me down a building roof when i was a baby.
how did they even come up with that idea, '' hey i want my son to be strong and in good health, how about throwing him down the roof''

Or it's tradition.
It's stupid, Like religion, but we keep it anyways because it makes people feel better and more secure.
Easily solved by putting babies in a large amounts of cloth.
Seems about as dangerous as baptism.

Yeah but the 'witches' generally died. These babies didn't.
Why do you think they continue this stupid ass tradition? Because this probably causes brain damage, and they keep continuing this stupid ass tradition as a result of said brain damage, it's an endless loop of retardation!
I guess they get really confused when one of their children gets sick and dies at a young age.
"But I threw him from the top of a building, I don't understand, he should have been as strong as an ox until he was 120 years old."

They probably use the same logic as Christians.
"Well I prayed for him, but I guess God didn't hear me."

Why has no one told me about these? Damn India and their crazy holidays.
Let them do it then let them face the wrath of crosswinds WAHHHH!!! SPLAT!!!
I can't very well argue against it if I have no evidence that babies were hurt during the ceremony...
But I want a few physicists and doctors to give me an opinion.
