Reno Air Race: P-51 crashes into stands, Fatalities confirmed, injuries unknown

Where's that one video where the plane smashed directly into a crowd, killing a ridiculous amount of people by smashing them, blowing them up, and riddling them with shrapnel? I remember the cameraman walking around stunned, filming the damage. It was 50x worse.

It was at a Ukraine air show IIRC.
then the plane was the one that failed, he probably lost controls. people REALLY shouldn't be flying these old war birds, last year,2 or 3 T6 texans crashed, killing the pilots in my area alone, these things are to old to be flown for fun.
you really don't know much about airplanes do you
My guess is that he was unconscious. He never throttled down, or attempted to move any of his controls. Even if the ailerons, elevators, or whatever failed, most pilots first reactions would probably be to throttle down at least a little bit so that they aren't going max speed. He might have just took the previous turn too hard and just blacked out?

Never mind, Totally forgot about the mayday.

He issued a mayday, so I doubt he was unconscious.
Majority of these crashes are caused by pilot error. The airplanes are fine, especially since it was an air race. Those p-51s used in air races are heavily modified.

doesn't stop a screw from coming loose and fucking over a wing
doesn't stop a screw from coming loose and fucking over a wing
that just doesn't happen.

If wings are held on by a single screw, I don't think im going to be attending an air race anytime soon.
My prayers go out to them.
this is the airplane the went down by the way

Beautiful aircraft. Jimmy Leeward the pilot.

Holy shit, my uncle was at this, I was really worried that he was one of those hurt or killed, but he just texted me saying he was okay. Thank fuck.
What a waste of such a cool looking plane
It wasn't "wasted" jackass, it probably malfunctioned and that's why it crashed. Why think about the plane when people were hurt and killed.
Fuck. Thats all I can say. Fuck.
my guess is in an attempt to win he pushed it past its operational capabilities, stalled it, and went over
anyone who knows anything about planes knows nothing that flies likes standing on its tail; he got too much lift and was forced nose-up
-snip it's in OP-
My step grandfather, Frank Smith, was narrating the show. The plane barely missed him. My grandmother says hes currently at a press conference about it all. I feel so disturbed over all of this. People in my family keep almost dieing. Just the other day my sister and mother were almost run over by a semi truck, if it had not been for my sisters quick thinking on the road they wouldn't be here now.

If thats true, your grandpas words are haunting. "We have emergency crews" ugh.
oh fuuuuccckkkk those pictures are hard to look at...
To anybody who thinks this tragedy was mechanical error, take note that 90% of all GA ( general aviation) accidents are caused by human error. To put it simply, the pilot probably lost situation awareness... Combined with the factors of being at a low altitude and the sheer power of a racing p-51, well, you've got a recipe for disaster. God rest those peoples souls and chalk up another rule or guideline that will be added to the FAR/AIM.
Also, notice the lack of flames? The only good thing about this is that it looks like he was low on gas, because I guarantee you that if he had semi-full tanks that more people would've died.
Christ that video on live leaks is hard to watch...
From what I understand, the pilot actually called in a mayday as he pulled up out of the racing pattern, then the plane nose dived into the crowd, so it was probably mechanical error this time. Whatever happened after he pulled up is anyone's guess

There's still the other 10%, and think about it. To be able to compete in this sort of, obviously extremely difficult, sport, you'd have to be pretty damn skilled. My money is on mechanical failure.

If he called out the mayday well before he hit the ground then he knew where he was. The video shows him just pulling out of a nose dive so it most likely isnt that he forgot where he was at in the sky.
that just doesn't happen.
You would be surprised how if one small part fails it fucks over everything else. Doing maneuvers mid air puts alot of strain on the air frame.

You just don't see the beauty of these planes like an aviation enthusiast does, They should fly, don't clip their wings :9
Wish I was old enough/rich enough to get a pilot licence.

These planes are not old. They're all restored and upgraded to modern standards.
Removed some clutter and updated the AP source. Sources now saying 3 dead with 50 injured
