Not to mention the opinion of the media is often the opinion of the constituency they broadcast to.
Well why is that shocking to you then? MOST people in western countries are white. People seem to find their own race more attractive than others. Ergo it makes sense that, at least in western countries people are going to find Caucasian features more attractive than any other racial features, and our ideals of beauty will reflect that fact.
when did I say it's shocking I just said that I don't think the media should have a racial bias when it comes to the sort of attractive people it advertises to the world
when did I say it's shocking I just said that I don't think the media should have a racial bias when it comes to the sort of attractive people it advertises to the world
So when E! says something positive about Megan Fox, who is a moderately attractive American woman, it's negative bias because she's white and there are black celebrities? Or when ESPN broadcasts Tim Tebow's fantastic quarterbacking it's negative bias because he's white and there are black quarterbacks? Maybe because the majority of famous people in the US are white doesn't mean it's racial bias, it's just that a larger white population = more famous white people.
no but when all the models in advertisements are white stick-thin aryan women, that's a problem.
maybe that's just advertising because the majority of people are white and clothing companies want to hit the biggest market possible?

Pick a random black girl, a random Asian girl, and a random white girl, and chances are I'll be most attracted to the white girl (as in I'm 95% sure of that fact). Pick 10 random black girls, 10 random Asian girls, and 10 random white girls and I'm sure the girls I'd be most attracted to would be the white ones. Because most people in the western world are white, it makes sense that our 'stereotypical ideals of beauty' will be Caucasian traits.
maybe that's just advertising because the majority of people are white and clothing companies want to hit the biggest market possible?
why should the skin colour of the model be enough to sway the public into buying the clothing? If that's true, then there's an even bigger problem. It bothers me for the same reason that size 0 models bother me, it espouses unreasonable beauty traits that negatively affect women. It's why I'm strongly against women's magazines, because half the articles in there are just to make women feel like shit [editline]16th November 2011[/editline]
That's where you said it, and that's where I disagree. You do not have a gene that is more attracted to whites. You are more attracted to whites because you perceive them to be superior. Also you ever seen a Black women with straight hair? It's either a wig or if they can afford it, chemically straightened to look more western.
Why would you think that? The 'maths' behind beauty transcend ethnicities.
I said on average. There are, of course, very attractive black and Asian women - no doubt about that. But on average I'm far more attracted to the average white girl than the average Asian girl, or the average black girl. This conversation point has come up between myself and lots of people in the past and everyone I've ever talked to about this has agreed - if they picture themselves with the perfect girl, they're always of the same race of them. I don't think it's wrong, I don't think it's racist, I think it's simply biology... an ancient instinct still carried by us. Humans fear the unknown, the different, it's why a lot of us are afraid of the dark when we're young... we don't know what's in it. It's scary, it's different, and it's unknowable - anything could be lurking within it! People of different races are different and unknown to us (or at least they used to be in the past). I think the fact that people are more attracted to their own race can be explained by that... some instinct that tells us not to mate with people that are incredibly different than ourselves. Of course genetic diversity is good, and nature knows that, that's why we're driven to mate with people outside of our families, people with SLIGHTLY different traits - but when the differences are radical (entire difference in skin tone, massive difference in facial features, etc), I think instinct warns us against it because, as far as the primitive human was aware, as far as our subconscious instinct is aware (even though we're consciously past this in the modern world) 'different' could mean 'danger'. Imagine you were a primitive, Caucasian human and you stumbled across a black man for the first time in your life - he'd be completely alien to you, for all you know he could be hostile (you don't know if he's friend or foe, you've never seen someone of that skin tone before in your life... nobody has), or maybe this person is diseased, maybe that's why his skin is different! Or perhaps it's some genetic deformity? I think it's an instinct that warns us away from people that look radically different than ourselves. Just a hypothesis I have, though. Doesn't mean it's correct, but it makes sense to me.

It's subtle, but it works. I'm pretty sure advertisements don't use skinny white women to make people who don't match that description feel inferior. I don't see you complaining about buff white men being used for advertising when the majority of men are not buff. Those who do are probably influenced by something else.

And I never said that they were made to make people feel inferior, but the idea behind beauty adverts is to go 'JESUS LOOK AT HOW ATTRACTIVE SHE IS AND HOW SHITE YOU LOOK, BETTER GO BUY SOME OF OUR PRODUCT' if beauty products worked on an advertising program saying 'you all look good as you are and don't need to change' they wouldn't make any money. I think people in advertising are the worst kind of person anyway.

okay fine I did say it, when I originally crafted that sentence I was originally basing it around the idea of adverts making minorities inferior, which I didn't say, but I realised that wasn't the argument and failed to change the sentence appropriately. My point still stands
advertising still tries to hit their target market, of course someone's going to be inferior compared to the advert.
well considering the amount of people that develop body image issues due to this 'target market' - of which, by the way, I don't see a whole lot anyway - I think they should consider an alternative route. Of course they won't because they're essentially the devil incarnate, but it's a nice thought
I don't think it's wrong, I don't think it's racist, I think it's simply biology... an ancient instinct still carried by us.
well there's zero evidence to suggest it's biological and 100% evidence to suggest it's cultural. biology-wise the greater the genetic diversity the better chances of survival we have. that's why we are the decent of many different genetic families that have died out. and fyi, i'm a jew and culturally we're told to go for jewish women or else we're continuing the holocaust and finishing hitler's job. and uh i'm totally bout them shiksa goddesses so yeah [editline]16th November 2011[/editline]
Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Droves of white men slaughtered in as many imaginative ways as the human mind can conjure but it all goes to hell when a lone black/yellow person appears and gets killed off just the same as everyone else.
lol is that a serious problem in estonia?
People are subconsciously racist.
gee I wonder why they're butthurt. Call me a greedy money-hoarding Kike all you want but don't act shocked when I'm annoyed by it. Black guy dies first isn't even a legitimate racial argument, it's just a joke that they'd often kill off the token black character early in a movie. It's the same with the fact that pretty much every black comedy actor has been put in a role where he cross dresses, no one is seething with rage, it's just a funny observation.
More often it was a consequence of the fact that the main actor/actress was white and was paid much more so they would kill off the actor/actress that was paid the least. Which happened to be the black person.
I have never known a barbie to have large breasts actually. Where did that complaint come from? Also, oh no, a minority of barbies are minorities! Call the wambulance!
I think that complaining about a lack of racial diversity is a form of racism.
I think that complaining about a lack of racial diversity is a form of racism.
yes obviously if you don't think white people are superior you must think your own race is superior. excellent thought process there
the op for some reason hates Behring Miri so in desperation he looked for an article where he mentions racism and creates a fake quote to mislead facepunch users so they join him in a circle jerk
Uh, desperation? The article was fucking stupid. I don't care who wrote it.
I'm talking about the concept of beauty put out there by the media, not individual people's ideals [editline]16th November 2011[/editline] hence why I said Western world
The concept of beauty put out there by the media does not rely on race, necessarily.
You do not have a gene that is more attracted to whites. You are more attracted to whites because you perceive them to be superior.
Here I was thinking that I just liked blonds, but apparently I subconsciously just can't get off to anyone who's a filthy untermensch.
Here I was thinking that I just liked blonds, but apparently I subconsciously just can't get off to anyone who's a filthy untermensch.
that's not what he said. i don't know why people can't debate without jumping to a sarcastic strawman.

Why not brown hair, or brown eyes?
thisispain, are you White, and if so, how did you react to the realization that you're one of the most privileged bodies in society?
well i'm jewish so i'm like a stealth minority.

Oh gee, young kids preferring a blonde girl over a black girl ! MUST BE RACISSSSSSSSSMMMMMMM Noticed how there wasn't a single black kid to do the test, by the way ? And how one kid that said "all of them are bad" clearly to joke because he's a boy and boys don't like barbies, yet it was counted as a "dislikes black one" ? Oh and how yet another kid said none of them were bad yet it wasn't interpreted as "black barbie is pretty too" ? That's a bullshit study. Basing your opinion on twenty-four kids and taking shortcuts in the analysis of their behavior, plus making it a generalization for the entire kids on the planet (once again, no black people in the test group) doesn't work.
