It's not your place to take control of a culture though. These people have lived and breathed Islam and now something as superficial as a cloth is getting people so worked up about it.
And not every religious person is held up at gun point..

Good, I think people need to really see how shallow this ban really is.
Preeeettyyy sure nobody would use a burqa if they weren't forced to it and if it wasn't even a thing...
Are you really comparing a piece of cloth that covers the whole face except the eyes (when it doesn't just cover up the whole face) that is used because of "muh culture", to an item that is used because its an actual health need against the hazardous air that only covers the mouth and wouldn't be used at all if there wasn't what's basicaly poisonous gas all over China's cities?
but then wouldn't the burka actually reduce the intake of hazardous air? :v:

This type of thing is really not your problem at all.
You may as well say, "all religious people need to be banned from practicing their beliefs".
I'm sure everybody will like it when people start wearing balaclavas in public. No reason we shouldn't it's just a piece of cloth.
If you genuinely think this is because of security of citizens, then you're mistaken m8.
This really isn't a good thing. This isn't China sticking up for poor oppressed Muslim women, this is China trying to suppress any culture that isn't 100% Chinese.
Kind of ironic that modern china doesn't really have a culture of its own from what I can tell.
No. Not good. I'm not going to defend this ban because I think people can believe what they want to believe, at least most of the time. I am, however, going to point out that what you are doing is literally judging this ban based on the materials and properties of a thing of sentimental value versus a thing of practical value.
Fuck it, let's follow your logic. Ban all hats, masks, handkerchiefs, bandanas and helmets. They're all falling under this same principle right? Why not follow it to the fucking letter.
why is this getting winners? preventing someone from wearing something is good?
[editline]12th January 2015[/editline]
is this good too?
I agree with you, same as the french ban on face covering. It's a limitation of our freedoms to wear anything we want. If we want to walk around covered up, we should be allowed to do so.

Really doubt a burqa can serve as a filter...
Is it your problem then??
Wearing a burqa = practicing beliefs? Damn, that's in line with "I'm a christian because I go to church on sundays, and thats about it." but whatever

as you can see, it is practical.
Kind of ironic that modern china doesn't really have a culture of its own from what I can tell.
what are you even saying? china is filled with soulless robots? of course china has a culture.
It's not your place to take control of a culture though.
In some places where the Burqa is enforced, it's also not permitted for girls to have an education - but that's fine right, I mean it's their culture??
These people have lived and breathed Islam and now something as superficial as a cloth is getting people so worked up about it.
Except a Burqa isn't superficial, do you really not see what it represents?
And not every religious person is held up at gun point..
Yeah no shit, but the Burqa as a whole is a symbol of oppression.

you can't solve your moral dilemma by tearing pieces of cloth off of women.
believe it or not, but I know a lot of people who are very happy to wear the burka.
In some places where the Burqa is enforced, it's also not permitted for girls to have an education
If that were the case in China, then wouldn't making it illegal to enforce the burqa make more sense than outright banning all people man or woman, to wear a cloth over their head.

But, in the case of the Uighur demographic (who originally wear a colorful dress) - this ban is aimed solely at the side of the Uighur demographic who have adopted the more "extremist" (extremist became a very laden word over the past weeks so I'm weary to use it) black burqas and are commiting numerous acts of terrorism in Urumqi and Xinjiang.
It is not the entire Uighur demographic that is being targeted, only the extremist side.
However, I don't agree with the measurements the Chinese government has taken. They are still effectively taking away the simplest forms of freedom, which is something that should never be done.
why the fuck is this being rated winner, if they pulled that same shit in the states youd get an outrage pouring from the feminist/muslim communities
a change like this can only be the result of an increase in freedoms through generations who have gradually become accustomed to them. you don't change what they wear, you change what they want to wear
it's good to see Islamophobia alive and well on these forums
That's not a burqa

Yes well increase their freedoms by taking away the freedom to chose what they want to wear.
Yes well increase their freedoms by taking away the freedom to chose what they want to wear.
I bet that there's a very good number of women wearing burqas that are doing it because their husbands force them to, rather than by choice.
Remember, it's okay to hate Islam and put down cultures because the religion itself is bad and evil!!!1 I have like one quote from the Koran that proves that 1.6 billion people all want to kill us!
Preeeettyyy sure nobody would use a burqa if they weren't forced to it and if it wasn't even a thing...
"pretty sure nobody would use this if it didn't exist"
wait what

Who says this?
Also, is it Islamophobic to say "the Quran is evil"?
Who says this?

We get it, you think you're educated and you hate Islam.
Who says this?

A better thing to do is ask yourself if you're right in condemning a faith that one and a half BILLION people belong to based on comparatively small anecdotal incidents.
I'm sure everybody will like it when people start wearing balaclavas in public. No reason we shouldn't it's just a piece of cloth.
Fine by me.
Either you're about to rob a bank and shoot a cop in which case you don't give a shit that wearing a balaclava is illegal because you're going to do something illegal anyway and it benefits you to wear it or else it doesn't matter because you're not going to do anything anyway.
Yes well increase their freedoms by taking away the freedom to chose what they want to wear.
If it makes you feel any better, nothing in the Koran says women should wear burqa's, only a hijab, and even then most modern Muslim countries allow a hijab to be entirely optional.
Who says this?
Also, is it Islamophobic to say "the Quran is evil"?
please continue to assert in every thread about islam that "book says thing" as if this was some startling new revelation. congrats, you read something backwards in a book written centuries ago, you're a hero.
We get it, you think you're educated and you hate Islam.
When did I mention my education? And I don't know if I hate Islam. Can you define it for me?
When did I mention my education? And I don't know if I hate Islam. Can you define it for me?
Your right, you've never posted in a thread with cherry picked Quran verses to support your view because you totally read it.
Your right, you've never posted in a thread with cherry picked Quran verses to support your view because you totally read it.
I have no idea what you're saying. I have read the book. If you don't believe that, that's not my problem.
Still, I asked for your definition of Islam.
So are you supposed to rate the OP's post based on what you think of the news, or based on what they said? I'm rather confused as to why he got so many dumb votes whenever he was just sharing news.

It's being rated dumb because it's dumb of Xinjiang officials to ban people from freely expressing their religion.
