Police in Myanmar say they have restored order after a riot during which homes and shops, largely Muslim-owned, were burned to the ground in the country's northwest.
Members of a 1,000-strong Buddhist mob torched dozens of homes and shops in Htan Gone, a village 16km south of Kantbalu town in Sagaing region, following rumours that a Muslim man tried to sexually assault a young woman, according to officials and witnesses.
State television reported that about 42 houses and 15 shops were burned and destroyed in Saturday's incident, but no injuries were reported.
The riot in Htangon, a village 16km south of Kantbalu town in Sagaing region, began after a crowd surrounded a police station, demanding that the suspect in the attempted assault be handed over, a police officer told the Associated Press news agency.
Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa, reporting from Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand, said this was part of a growing cycle of religious violence in Myanmar.
"This falls into a pattern of violence against Muslims that's been happening for more than a year now," she said.

I think the idea is buddhists don't kill in the name of their gods. They just happen to be a cultural group with common religion which is used to represent them, but it's not the driving force of their aggression.
Their conflict has a religious subtext, not a religious cause, as opposed to Jihad and fighting in the name of Allah or any other god.
I might be wrong tho and feel free to correct me.

Many people have died at the hands of Buddhists since forever.
They're not as peaceful as people like to pretend.

yeah, and the funny thing is people seem to think the Dalai Lama is this holier-than-thou figure. He isn't. Go and research Tibet during his rule, he and a priest caste ruled the country oppressively, basically you would not have wanted to live there during that time.

People aren't peaceful, period. The thing is that some aggression is driven by their religion, and some has other causes.
Last month, a group of Buddhist monks had protested near the mosque, demanding it be relocated.
In recent months, hardline Buddhist groups have mounted a campaign against Muslim and Christian targets.
Several houses were also damaged in Saturday's clashes. Two of the injured were policemen guarding the mosque.
this is actually pretty common

doesn't matter, I'm shedding light on a subject for some people
This is what happens when you make an organised religion of a disorganised unreligion.

So, the jolly Brittish fellas from the group I can't remember the name of who drew swastikas on a freshly built mosque are acting based on their religion as well?
What about all these Americans who see every muslim as a Terrorist and wish them death en masse?
Disliking a particular group can be matter of simple xenophobia or other issues, and even if you are part of a religious group and they are part of another religious group, it doesn't have to be because your religion tells you to do so.
buddhists shouldn't be called buddhist if they don't act buddhist
Some people identify themselves as followers of a religion but doesn't abide by all its rules, others follow a strict code but don't identify themselves with a religion in a way you might expect. Religious identity is just another shitty thing to ascribe attributes to people by, just like skin color and nationality. You can't expect a Buddhist to be all friendly and philantropic no more than you can expect a Muslim to blow themselves up or a Christian to hate gays.
buddhists shouldn't be called buddhist if they don't act buddhist
Thing is that buddhism is religion that doesn't really give you firm rules about what you have to and what you can't do.
It sorta implies that if you do shitty things, it will return to you later on (possibly in the next life). There's no concept of hell or heaven which would strictly say "DO THIS OR YOU GONNA GET FUCKED". It's more of a set of suggestions and guide, at least as far as I understand.
I'm a Buddhist, I'm just like any other person.
Religion is all the same, Its like we're all trying to go to the mall but some of us take the free way, some take the bus, Different routes, same destination. Buddhists are people too, we still get angry. And no we don't all know Kung Fu.
