Thousands Sign Petition to Not Have Kanye West Play at the Glastonbury Music Festival
have you literally never heard of the term atonal?
There are thousands of artists that are intended to not sound 'nice and pretty' like No-Wave music, noise music
that's like a really basic music theory concept
Well Kanye West is the only person who I have heard of getting called a genius for failing to configure a vocoder properly so I guess it just throws me off
[editline]22nd March 2015[/editline]
Autotune can be used for more than just 'fixing' vocals, you know that right? Kanye uses his as a cross between vocals and synths.
If we want to put it in a rock context, think of it like a talk box.
See above for example of vocoder that actually sounds close to a synth rather than just a badly used vocoder.
Well Kanye West is the only person who I have heard of getting called a genius for failing to configure a vocoder properly so I guess it just throws me off
I mean for a start it's not a vocoder, it's autotune, and yes it is pretty clever that he managed to get that deliberately jarring sound out of it, you need to understand the zeitgest to 'get' 808s and heartbreak, it was a jarring, minimal and soulful album in a time when hip hop was basically the opposite of that, he was stepping vastly outside of him comfort zone and managed to pull it off incredibly well

So at this point you're basically just ignoring that he intended a different effect from the one you want?
Uh, you can use a vocoder without it sounding like shit, tho

(on top of actually pleasant "robotized/emotionless" sound that's a dude singing, by the way)
[editline]22nd March 2015[/editline]
That's a legit and skillful use of vocoder, in my book.
Also this song is generic as hell and it's nothing that black moth super rainbow weren't doing 5 years prior

Automerge!

also I like how you completely ignored all the other songs I posted
What? Do you understand that music isn't just intended to be upbeat and cheerful? That as an art form it requires a repertoire that helps people put across the entire gambit of human emotion like, oh man I dunno, sadness or malaise? You know, the sort of thing that might require jarring sounds to help make the listener feel uncomfortable much like the artist felt at the time since it would be weird to be talking about how they lost something whilst the listener feels chipper?
I honestly don't get how this is so hard for some people.
I listen to things ranging from

which is literally talking about basically an orgy of self harm and satan worship, and the sound plays the part as well
as well as stuff like

which is pretty much song about themes I don't even want to write about here (while also using quite "disruptive" audio techniques by the way), as well as very daunting melodic elements
and stuff like

which goes quite far into atonality and sounds that are very far from pleasant or emotionally upbeat
yet somehow all these authors seem to give me far more than anything I have still ever heard from kanye west
Just tried out Kayne west's music... hated it.

gg you listen to different genres why didn't you just post in the music thread bud
So at this point you're basically just ignoring that he intended a different effect from the one you want?
Well if your point is "he intends to sound like amateur hour shit because of REASONS" then fair enough, I guess that cannot be contested
yeah i think everyone would prefer that than you post shitty music

That's neat, it makes it all the more impressive that you seem to have a hard time getting the guys artistic choices.
We're not telling you to like the guys music I don't really care if you think it's lower than dog shit, the point is that people just go "hurr durr kanye sucks," completely sidestepping the fact that he has went from strength to strength and continuously reworked modern hip-hop, genuinely listen the hip-hop of the era before and after albums like 808s and MBDTF and you'll see what we mean.
Seriously though on the whole synth/vocoder/autotune thing that's just complaining you don't like the effect, chosen or desired.
gg you listen to different genres why didn't you just post in the music thread bud
Well I already posted that there is rap I listen with an example to so how's that a point?
Well if your point is "he intends to sound like amateur hour shit because of REASONS" then fair enough, I guess that cannot be contested
I could sling shit around and say that you're one to talk about amateur, but I've explained it clearly to you and you're instead arguing against someone else instead
Almost as if you're out to hate Kanye eh?

Well you didn't explain anything, you said basically "before he sounded like this, and now he sounds like this" but I do not understand how it's an achievement when he sounded bad both before and after so I cannot really react to your post anyhow or take it for anything
sure kanye has a bit of an ego problem but he makes really good music, that can't be denied
Yes it can.
I don't like him and I think that genre of music is shite. Every time you call him a 'genius' a scientist working on AIDS research puts down his test tube and thinks they're on the wrong path.
Not that I don't appreciate others enjoy it of course, it's just that I don't. He is a pretty big signing to have in the middle of a turnip field in England. There can't be that many that can get tickets anyway, so I wonder how many that signed this stupid thing were going to Glastonbury anyway?

curious as to what your thoughts are on modern art like, say, jackson pollock
they're not asking you to enjoy the music, just to appreciate how important kanye is to hip hop

you originally didn't post the bolded bit and I'm really curious why you added it in, because you sounded like a pretty cool guy who didnt like the music but could accept that some people did (which is how music should be) until you edited your post
i mean, you do understand that scientific genius and musical genius are two different kinds of genius, right?
people act like most of the dadrock gods aren't the biggest fucking dickheads on earth
Most musicians are dickheads. If they aren't obnoxious dickheads, then they're complete introverts who rarely interact with society.
There's a difference between dickheads who make good music, and dickheads who do nothing but be dickheads though. In my opinion, Kanye is in the latter. You can say that I'm wrong, but that's the beauty of opinions. Everyone has one.
I get that some think he's a genius, but I'm starting to wonder if it's because Kanye thinks he's a genius himself and people just believe any drivel that comes out of his mouth.

I've clearly said that 808s and heartbreak was a very important album to the hip hop climate at the time, but that's fine you keep on truckin' with you 'it doesn't sound like thing I like so it's bad' rhetoric

You're dismissing the entirety of hip hop? Why exactly? Kanye doesn't represent it entirely

but every time he puts out a record he changes every pop genre on the market. the dude creates genre. what genre are you talking about?

to be honest I didn't know who jackson pollock was so I googled the name for pictures and I have to say that in all of two minutes of browsing through them I could "find" and associate myself with the emotional message the pieces were meant to carry, unlike in case of the current topic
let me point out I recognize many musical genres I cannot personally stomach whatsoever (most metal subgenres except in fact, except pretty much industrial metal and power metal) yet I still can recognize the skill and effort that go into them, even though they just don't appeal to me. This is simply the not the case with mister kanye and I am unendingly confused by that, as there surely must be something I am missing but nobody seems to be able to explain or give an example of

I think the problem is that kanye has done a lot for pop and hip hop music which don't seem to be genres you're a big fan of. There could be an artist who has done tons to influence ambient music but if you weren't a fan of ambient music it's hard to appreciate that, ykno?

you can't find any emotional connection with any of these ideas?

in there we've got working-class drug culture, middle-class capitalist culture, loving your mum, thinking of childhood friends and family, family gathering stuff, being happy with and accepting who you are both for your strengths and faults... i mean these are pretty normal things songs are about that are very easy to empathise with. i mean here i've picked some of the oldest and simplest records from his repertoire that are more 'classic' hip hop because i dont want to challenge you too much by posting 808s tunes
here surely must be something I am missing but nobody seems to be able to explain or give an example of
the songs posted by others in this thread, especially those from mbdtf, 808s, and yeesus, speak for themselves - if you can't appreciate or understand music production then maybe you wont get it but they are genre-defining records that have irreversibly altered the entire pop music industry

perhaps. I won't pretend I know how is that genre evolving in last few years because I genuinely don't know about that, so perhaps if he's redefining hiphop pop and his genius is contained to that, I will probably not be able to appreciate it, that's fair to admit
I don't understand why people are saying they don't like or enjoy Kanye's music when they also mention that they don't listen to him or know his history?
Music is art, a form of expression, it's not just uppity beats for you to nod your head to.
see I think Foo Fighters are just incredibly bland
they pretty much are, but dave grohl is an incredible musician. I don't think he realizes how much he's holding himself back with foo fighters. listen to his work with other acts (them crooked vultures, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails etc.) or even to some of his acoustic live stuff. there are a couple of gems to be found in the Foo Fighters discography but overall that band has been an atrocious waste of a rare talent.

that's funny, because this is mostly what Kanye West is appreciated for (though I'd probably have been a bit less pretentious with my wording).

I understand the differences perfectly. Basically I went back a page then forward before I'd finished, then put the 'genius' bit at the wrong point but saved the edit a second time by mistake. It was supposed to go at the end tomake fun of the petition signers that don't get Kanye. I get him, I'm just not interested.
It would have made my post a lot more consistent but I just can't be bothered to edit it now.
In relation to whether I like hiphop, I just think it used to mean more. It just seems shallow these days, but then I'm no expert.
There's like 10 fucking stages to go to. Don't go to the one Kanye is performing at if you don't want to hear Kanye.
Theres over 100 stages at Glastonbury. Theres literally thousands of other things to be doing at the precise moment Kanye is playing.
The vast majority of people who have signed the petition havent even got tickets.
I have my ticket, I wont be seeing Kanye but I wont be fucking moaning about him either.
