Same. Or like 15.
I'd say only extreme dumb-asses start smoking when they are legally able to, i.e. immediately at 18. (If you go to the army it's fine though.)
Hell, make a study asking people when they started smoking, what do you think the results would be? I hereby hypothesize that most people started smoking before the legal limit.
I'm against smoking but this entire post is incredibly condescending.
it's true though, nobody starts smoking at 18, just like nobody starts drinking at 21. maybe they started smoking earlier, maybe they started smoking later, but the only people who start smoking at 18 are the people who just do it because it fits their style

I know plenty of people that started smoking at 18, they did it to cope with stress while at university, and a couple did it because they started working in a place where a lot of people smoked

I started smoking at 18 because everyone at work did and it was nice way to escape for 5 minutes, stop speaking for everybody

I hope you don't actually believe this, lol.
All this is going to do is make young adults risk felonies with fake ids.
I can see this as I did consider the idea of getting a fake, and they aren't even that expensive.

I started at 18 to cope with stress and crippling depression.
See, I don't understand that mentality. If I saw gore photos on a product that is proven to cause said gore photos to be part of my body, I'd stop using that product, no matter how much I liked it.
Per example, I used to smoke weed a lot, but between feeling mild sick all the time and not being able to run at all, I gave it up. Same with the occasional cig. I found things in my life that were more important to me than the fleeting high they gave me and realized that chasing the rush wasn't going to bring me any sort of personal fulfillment outside of being part of a clique I wasn't sure I wanted to be engaged with anyway.
It's obviously a personal decision man, but ask yourself why you use a product that kills you, ruins your bank account all while causing damage to current and future relationships. I did, and I couldn't give myself a reasonable answer, which is why I forced myself to quit.
it obviously varies from person to person but a lot of people i know don't really care about it being harmful because some have that silly "live fast die young" mindset while others treat it in a kinda cynical way. i can't exactly say tobacco breaks my bank because it's not really that expensive and pretty much everyone i've ever known has been a smoker

like take someone that's depressed for example, do you really think they care that their short escape is bad for them? sure, it's counterproductive but it's pretty understandable

Informative.. It appears there definitely are people who start smoking at 18, and for variety of reasons. However I'd still like to kinda criticize it.
For example Kylel99, why? You pay money to worsen your health because everyone else at work did (you're no longer even employed there?) plus you take time off the work. At least do it on your breaks.
And strayabird, while stress relieving is generally the idea, I don't think smoking even really helps with stress in the long-run..
I mean, they start off with a body clean of nicotine, better able to handle stress I'd imagine from my nicotine-addicted position, so smoking shouldn't really help them study longer and harder any better..
Unless of course they want to start associating the "relaxing" feeling of nicotine, and other random chemicals rushing through their lungs into the bloodstream, with each time they take a break from studying.
Or maybe because they simply "like the rush" at school breaks (say, a less stressful studying place than a university), and then eventually just develop an addiction with no rush, no benefit, no nothing. Just satisfying your body physically screaming for it, which feels nice sometimes, I guess. At the cost of only $5 a pack!*
(*Other costs may apply.)
Is this even enforced?
Really they should ban the sale of Tobacco to anyone who isn't already legal.
This!
There's a local hookah bar I now cannot go to and they're worrying because a lot of their customers were under 21, as well as many of their employees. It's like a mom and pop shop too.
as much as I hate cigarettes and want them to stop existing this is dumb as hell
lower the drinking age and keep the smoking age at 18.
you aren't going to fix anything by making it harder to access, or by even banning it. 12 year olds are going to smoke still, and 18 year olds now have to ask strange people to buy smokes for them, who are grown adults who are old enough to join the military. This doesn't magically make the issue go away. Lax laws regarding this stuff work because it doesn't strike the rebellious side of people and people can feel comfortable and be better informed about their decisions because money can instead be spent on educating them about it rather than arresting them because they wanted a smoke.
You realize making the drinking age lower would be horrible for DUI's and alcohol relate non vehicle accidents... Let the kids mature just a little bit before they get wasted.

No, prohibition doesn't work. Harm reduction is the way to go.
