ugh americans are so dumb when it comes to stealing why cant they be smart like glorious sweden
Too bad the piratebay isn't technically swedish
Couldn't he claim the modifications were for homebrew? That would probably lower his sentence.
I thought those modchips were legal, as in they just void the warranty, but other than that they are legal.
The modchips don't usually say "use this modchip to play pirated games!", but rather they usually say "use the modchips to play homebrewed games" or something along the lines of that.
--Fucking snip--
I replaced the CPU chip in my Genisis with a faster one.
:cop: OH NO, THE COPS ARE GOING TO ARREST ME! I'M GOING TO JAIL! :cop:
Seriously, this is just the console manufacturers that if you fuck with their consoles, they will fuck with you. I'm assuming that these kind of arrests are not done daily and this one in particular is just a reminder from the manufacturers that they are watching you..... :tinfoil:
If this was the twelfth century they would of just tied him to a post in the middle of the market and let people throw rotten food at him or worse... :hist101:
And you pay taxes for them :D

Yeah, they don't. But 98% of the time they do.
If a Rastafarian is buying growing equipment worth of 5k$, do you really believe that he is growing roses?
I've messed around with my Consoles, but not to make them play illegal things.
Sir the prosecution would like to express concern with this irresponsible sentiment!

I don't see the problem. He pirated video games.
Only in US you can jail a person for modding a console.
That's because us american's are not pussies enough to NOT do that.
Wow, America really knows how to crack down on crime. So far, they've busted some guys for some harmless drugs that should be our right to inhale in the first place, put a man away for yawning, and stopped an evil console modder. I'd feel safe living there.
I like how you make a giant assumption about a country the size of your continent based solely on a handful of news stories you've seen on facepunch.
I think the point is it's a little harsh for something so over-exaggerated. If corporations were having such financial problems from it it would be a lot more obvious.
Over exaggerated or not it's still a law, and he knowingly broke it so those are the consequences he gets.
I think they are harsh, but they are still there, harsh or not.
“playing with games in this way is not a game -- it is criminal,”
it is criminal!
The pirating policy's and drug policy's in this country are fucked.

"NO YOU DONT"
"Yes, I really do. That's sort of my job."
"NUH UH"
OUTSMARTED
Uhh, no, some of us read legal documentation that can send us to prison before we agree to legal documentation that can send us to prison.
I'm sorry but if you're reading legal documentation before installing a video game you bought with your money, something's upside down
you wouldnt download a policeman
and then pirate his family
I'm sorry but if you're reading legal documentation before installing a video game you bought with your money, something's upside down
I ensure each and every contract I agree to does not have an Eternal Soul Ownership Clause, not because I believe in that but on principal.

I can only sign that away once and I want to get something good for it.
I convince my cat to jump on the mouse and agree to the EULAs.

The judge may not believe you but...
Goddamn, i fucking HAAAAATE Copyright laws!
Seriously, a 500 thousand dollar fine for a movie that costs 25$ is overboard
Are the fines less if you don't distribute what you downloaded?

Not if you distributed it to 20,000 people.

People who don't distribute are rarely ever brought to court.
