As you guys will probably remember, there were rumors/reports that Nintendo would use Sharp's free-form display technology in some way, for one of their future projects.
Well today a patent application surfaced that demonstrates just that, for a handheld device (that looks like a controller), which features an elliptical touch-screen that covers the device's whole top surface area.
Like in the past, Nintendo's name is nowhere to be found in the application (e.g assignee or applicant), however it's clear it's by them as all (5) engineers/inventors listed are Nintendo employees.
DISCLAIMER
As always with patents, the specific design/setup won't necessarily make it to a -potential- final product so don't get caught-up with details such as shape/form of shown device and/or physical button number/placement - the whole point of this seems to be the free-form display.

Interesting concept, but I'd reckon your fingers would get in the way.
So it's a touch phone with handles?
Awesome!
It will be the best handheld ever, or the best PS3-level hardware kind of Wii ever.
i cant wait to play shoot an iguana on my new wii-touch
Reminds me of the original design for the Steam controller, but even weirder.
Hey Nintendo, guess what you've missed in the past 10 years:
People hate touch screen controls, they are absolute donkey shit due to lack of physical feedback.
You wanna make a controller with a whole-touch surface? Here's a hint; Don't.
Awesome! I can't wait for more gimmicks!
You know what the sad thing about nintendo is? The gamecube might be one of my favorite consoles of all time with some of my favorite games of all time. Unfortunately, it was nintendos worst selling console. The Wii? very little replayability. Some games are interesting for a few minutes when you've got friends over, but it's not a very good platform for traditional (non gimmicky) games. Of course, the wii exploded in sales so nintendo will follow that line of products.

In a logical world this patent wouldn't be confirmed anyway at this point. Phones already do this.
At least it is not a giant rectangle like the wii u controller

Which is funny cause that's the most comfortable controller of the generation lol...
I thought Sharp already had the patent for free-form bezel-less screens.
EDIT: Yeah, they do. [t]http://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/news/gallery/sharp-unveils-free-form-igzo-display-say-goodbye-to-rectangular-dash-screens_2.jpg[/t]

...if you've only used the Wii U controller, that is.

Wii U and PS4 owner here. You're wrong. Sorry.
I own all three consoles and find the Wii U Pro controller to be the best one.
Plus that ~80 hour battery life is pretty nice.

IMO the Xbox One controller improved everything about the 360 controller.

They have 2 physical joysticks(18a / 18b), and 2 physical buttons on the top. And Nintendo has also invested into force-feedback stuff in the past.
Besides its not an actual design, its just a patent.

I'd like it if the triggers were just a little bit more far apart, like they were on the 360 one but other than that, yes.
Also this is interesting. Of course it's only a patent and might never lead into anything, or the product could in the end be entirely different, but interesting nonetheless.
Ffs I hope this goes nowhere. Nintendo's obsession with dumbarse gimmicks is just downright weird since they've always been so good at core consoles. Just release a relatively powerful console with a pro controller like controller and leave it at that, Nintendo could do that 10x better than Sony and Microsoft if they just calmed down with the gimmicks.

Still, I'd rather have a billion buttons that'd all be physical, then I'd have to rub my fingers against something and pray that I'm doing it right.

Not to mention everyone who doesn't own a Wii U is always screaming "HURRDURR GIMMICK!!" about the Gamepad having a screen, but it's actually a super useful and welcome addition to most games.
i can never hit touchscreen buttons
and don't even get my started on touchscreen joysticks, holy shit it's like i have to like my thumb every so often

I have owned a Wii-U for over a year and can say it adds nothing to most games and is a gimmick.
Most games, it is a map at most. Others, it is a pause menu.
A few games, it was used, but in a 'look what i can do!' way.

What is Xenoblade Chronicles? Mario Galaxy?

I'll put another few hundred hours into Super Mario 3D World, Sm4sh and MK8 and let you know when I work why the WiiU gamepad exists.
[editline]10th December 2015[/editline]
(I use the WiiU so much with friends and the only use the gamepad gets is if one of our friends, who has huge hands and no pro controller is over)

You can play games without connecting the Wii U to a monitor.
My brother never uses a TV or a monitor, he just plays on the controller.

xb1 elite/steam controller.
if unable to get, Wii U gamepad/xb1 regular/wii u pro.
no substitutes.
My only issue with the Wii U pro controller is that there's no headphone jack. It's a 10/10 controller otherwise.

its also digital triggers sadly.
not good for racing (only 0% throttle or 100%) but the ergonomics are one of the best.
Honestly I hate touch screens! Any kind, pressure sensitive, electro, etc. I don't think they're clever or inventive in any way and physical keys do a much better job.
