can't believe the amount of people who just didn't read the op or the steam page. it's for steamOS and big picture. in case it somehow wasn't clear enough, the purpose of big picture is to make everything function like a console. you turn on your computer and go straight to the big picture interface and use a controller to navigate. how would you play music this way without circumventing the interface? that's what this feature is for.
it's for steamOS and big picture.
at first
they're integrating it into the desktop version as well
which is good, because alt-tabbing breaks some games and global hotkeys only let me skip and pause. putting music controls in the overlay would let you have a fully featured music player that you can easily access in-game
Also shift-tab to edit your playlists instead of alt-tab, which makes some games screw up.
Borderless windowed

It's funny because apparently you didn't read it either. "with desktop features soon to follow".

if they remade it with their current coders it would probably perform a million times better and not take up as much memory as it does now

lol.
Seeing as you clearly have access to the source code (how else would you know what the problem is??) clearly you should tell someone to fix it. The only (major) problem with steam is caused by a problem with Windows, as soon as you overcome said problem Steam does not run like shit any more.

Also I assume this is going to include the speculated about "now playing" feature. From what someone guessed / figured out a few weeks ago if you listen to music via spotify (and I guess maybe other clients) it will display it under your name on Steam.
Neat I guess.
Also shift-tab to edit your playlists instead of alt-tab, which makes some games screw up.
I have never had a problem with alt-tab.
Should've named it Calliope (a steam-powered organ)
God calliopes are awesome, they just have an innate power to turn any song into the most whimsical thing ever.

do you really believe that benefits valve at all? just because they're letting people use it without big picture/steamOS that doesn't change the fact that it only exists to support big picture and steamOS.
I'd be extremely surprised if there wasn't an app for every major smart phone/tablet that lets you play music on your PC with whatever program you use. apple has had that since like 2008. valve wouldn't put resources into such a minor convenience that stands to benefit almost nobody.

causes stuttering/bad performance/crashing or just plain isn't supported by a lot of games.
Please allow it to come to Canada, Valve. That would make me the happiest little girl ever.
It's not a streaming service. It's just an integrated in game music player. You just point it to your music library on your hard drive and it lets you play them while in game.
i would love if when i'm not playing a game, and listening something at steam music, my friends could see the music i'm listening to at the friends list, like the way you see someone playing something
perhaps an choosable option

it's property of steam

Sooo, msn messenger?
Sooo, msn messenger?
exactly what i was thinking of!
The question is, will it support FLAC?
The question is, will it support FLAC?
Yes, mucho important for me.
I feel like they're trying too hard.

Because it's still a huge issue that I don't see Valve fixing, the features are wonderful and I welcome them with open hands but their client is a disappointment and the design UI doesn't fit their current design so it looks off
This is awesome. I hope there's a database or something of the sort where you can see what others are listening to, what's hot etc, like Audiosurf and Spotify.
The question is, will it support FLAC?
At first no, just MP3s, but support later.
I'm excited for this; makes it so I can manage volume levels easier when playing games and not crash when I alt-tab out.
Foobar2000 has keyboard shortcut settings. You can bind any short of replay command (e.g Play/Pause/Next/Prev etc without alt-tabbing out). Works with most games.
I only find this useful for games (like STALKER) where when you are inside the game, the function keys are dead. Can't Alt-tab out either.

I used to have problems like this, but atm i can't relate to it.
Steam uses ~60 mb of ram and 0% CPU, with a Friends, Servers. Store and Chat window open.
Chrome uses ~80 mb for this tab, and ~3% CPU.
Integration into the steam overlay.
It's hardly anything. Still, good to see steam adding features.

Did the same, got 92MB used by Steam. Closed all windows, usage lowered to about 15MB.
Moral of the story is "Close your fucking windows when you're done with them."
A way to control music ingame would be fantastic.
I'm cursed with this wireless keyboard/mouse combo whose music controls consist of this:
Integration into the steam overlay.
Steam Overlay shits itself when I try to go onto Desktop Facebook or other sites so it'll be interesting to see how fast it shits itself with music
Coolio, with spotify I have a button that stops, plays, skips, goes back, etc on my keyboard but some older games like Oblivion (and skyrim) then to not allow those buttons to work
Yea, playing music while playing a TES game is silly, but I like pretending my mage has a spell that plays music from another dimension as I travel. (Only do it on roads)

My desktop web browser shits itself with desktop Facebook.
It's not the computer or the overlay, desktop Facebook is just so fucking bad.
