• Mother Charged after Shooting into the Air to Scare off group Attacking her Daughter

She screwed up in more than one way. 1. She has shown everyone in that neighborhood that she owns a gun. Raises the risk of burglary or strong arm robbery, since now anyone sketchy who lives around there knows where to steal a gun. 2. Firing a warning shot, besides being pointlessly stupid, is a sign of weakness. Now those sketchy people know that she doesn't have it in her to shoot anyone, even if they are attacking her daughter.
The misdemeanor charge is just one thing Ms. Gaither is dealing with in the aftermath of the weekend confrontation. As of Tuesday evening, Brianna was missing. The teen, who went to her grandmother’s house after Ms. Gaither was arrested, disappeared Sunday.
Holy shit, I hope she's okay.
Unless you're in a life or death situation, which this woman wasn't, it's incredibly reckless to do something like that and a person who thinks thats OK probably shouldn't have access to a firearm.
In the heat of any moment you can never determine if it's life or death once the adreneline starts flowing. For all the mother knew those boys could have tried raping and/or killing her daughter. Not saying her shooting a bullet in the air was justified but it certainly was understandable given the situation.
http://mythbustersresults.com/episode50 Not sure how legit it is, I don't recall the episode at all.
It is one of their older shows, and they even recognize the flaws of the test. Basically, the bullet went into the air until it lost all of it's momentum, then fell until it's terminal velocity. The flaw is that normally when you throw something in the air, it keeps a bit of it's momentum as it falls, as that momentum is not purely fighting against gravity(not a perfectly vertical angle). Firing a bullet straight will cause it to fall at the same rate as if you through a baseball, just go farther. If you throw a baseball in the air though, it will reach the ground much faster than a bullet, due to they are both moving against the forces of gravity and the bullet has more momentum relatively. For example, think artillery angles and shooting over the horizon/line of sight it uses gravity to get past physical barriers, but still has enough velocity to hit the target.
I was in a similar situation once, and I'm happy I never fired a warning shot after reading this. Basically this kid came to my house looking for a fight and started arguing and pushing my father around. So I went inside grabbed my .22 ruger pointed it at the kid and told him to get the fuck off my property.
It's like you live in a mirror universe where everyone is a Jerry Springer guest.
I too decide if someone should die after reading a handful of words over the internet.
A life was potentially in danger, better to end it with an assailant dead than the victim.
A life was potentially in danger, better to end it with an assailant dead than the victim.
I think teachers should be allowed to shoot into crowds of children fighting at the playground as well. In fact all forms of physical disagreements needs to be met with at least one bystander shooting into it.
Might want to re think that.
I bet most of that is guns fired at an angle. Not saying that just firing into the air is safe. Firing anywhere other than a target is a bad idea. But thinking that firing it straight up would kill you is false. If you firing it at an angle it can kill someone as it'd be much like an arrow. But straight up the bullet would loose all momentum then fall back to earth at the terminal velocity for its weight, which would be fairly slow as compared to when it fired. Its simple physics. The small projectile doesn't have enough weight. A bullet kills by speed, once its lost all that speed its mostly harmless. People really give god-like attributes to guns when they aren't that complex.

So now the daughter is missing?
I think teachers should be allowed to shoot into crowds of children fighting at the playground as well. I think that parents should never be allowed to defend their children when being ganged up on 10:1
They just tested it's velocity coming back down and how deep into the salt flats it penetrated.
I was just kidding. [sp]Although that was a nice, concise explanation.[/sp]
oh oh can I play the straw man game too I think that parents should never be allowed to defend their children when being ganged up on 10:1
Defend =/= start shooting into a crowd of teenagers for punching someone.
Defend =/= start shooting into a crowd of teenagers for punching someone.
I like to wait to see the outcomes of fights too before I take action [editline]23rd October 2013[/editline] unless you want me to stop the straw man game
I like to wait to see the outcomes of fights too before I take action
Who even suggested anything remotely like that? Is shooting teenagers your only god damn solution for problems lmao If you're going to strawman at least try to stay relevent gawd

How does owning a gun raise the risk of someone robbing you? If anything, it should ward them off. Secondly, I wouldn't doubt a mother would shoot someone who is threatening the life of her child.
Defend =/= start shooting into a crowd of teenagers for punching someone.
That someone being their fucking child. Don't replace words like that as if making it seem "Oh, it was just someone" because the fact that it was the daughter makes it pretty damn significant
for the record i think it was really dumb to fire a gun like that and she deserves the charge but I hope the 10 kids were at least charged with a misdemeanor or something
I too decide if someone should die after reading a handful of words over the internet.
I know you guys don't believe in protecting the lives of your families and yourselves over in the UK, but if I had a daughter and a man punched her in the face and he had multiple other fucking men backing him up; One of the fuckers is going to be on the ground screaming with a .40 S&W slug in his leg. I don't have the strength or the health to fight off multiple attackers and I CERTAINLY don't have time to wait for a cop (literally just another man with a gun) to come and save me. The beautiful thing is the mother would be 100% in the right if she had just shot one of them here in New Mexico. :v:
Yeah in this case the cops are unfortunately right. The mother shouldn't have fired into the air. It CAN kill people. Firing into the ground would have been a much better choice, or god forbid yelling "I HAVE A GUN BACK THE FUCK OFF"
I know you guys don't believe in protecting the lives of your families and yourselves over in the UK
lmao get a grip
You forget that not everyone is apathetic for human life.
better a scumbag who is assault a teenage girl die than a random bystander potentially die by a falling bullet.
I think teachers should be allowed to shoot into crowds of children fighting at the playground as well.
school yard fights are a tad different than 10 people assaulting a 15 year old girl.
I guess we've seen different school yard fights huh
The bullet isn't going to be travelling that fast coming down, if shot straight up. Its like the old myth that dropping a penny from skyscrapers would kill someone. They might hurt, but they won't kill you.
a bullet spirals and so it will keep it's nose pointed in the direction of travel and thus be incredibly aerodynamic and have insanely high speeds on the way down, especially if shot at an angle and not just straight up. Straight up it would probably not do much, but like 45 degrees or so it's just like a howitzer and the bullet will be just as lethal as any other bullet.
Fun physics fact for you: An object that is launched vertically will come down at the same speed it went up neglecting air resistance. I seriously doubt air resistance would be enough to make a bullet nonfatal, though I think given the situation she handled things pretty well
