that's ok you can be glad you won't have to deal with his utter hatred of everything but it's still very creepy to see people literally celebrate the death of any human being regardless of views
[editline]20th March 2014[/editline]
also it's not like you can just put 'instinctive morals' aside in modern society, so why are we even talking about this
Define 'Celebrate.'
Throwing an entire party in response to it--yes, that's rather unnerving. However, a single forum post of, "Good riddance." that takes not more than 10-seconds to submit is hardly an equal comparison.
I don't get it. Serial killers wouldn't even get this much venom from Facepunch. All this man did was be a hateful and ignorant fool, but those are a dime a dozen.
I pity him. Maybe if god is around he's shown him the error of his ways.
Hateful on a level never before seen, except maybe in medieval times and in the caves of Afghanistan.
People who volunteer for the military, get sent out to places and die by pencil pushers behind a desk, these people then go to their funerals where their family is mourning their loss of a son or daughter, after already saying bye to them 10 months prior to their deployment only seeing them on Skype every now and then, and they hold up signs that say basically Yeah, Fuck You, it's his own fault because he supports gays and sins, We're glad he's dead Hooraaaay. He's burning in hell, your son, Thank god your son is dead!
Fuck'em
And they had the balls to say respect his wishes. Give me a fucking break
I am happy he is dead, and if his family continues his work, I'll be happy when they're dead too
AND
I don't care how anyone feels about
This is a universally good thing for everyone but WBC.
And thats completely fine.
Yes, it's pointless, but there's nothing truly harmful about it. It doesn't matter if people should be discouraged or not, the guy asked what's bad about doing it, not what's bad about people who'd do it.
i would argue that such line of thinking only serves to generally encourage feelings of contempt, etc and should be discouraged on the basis that a person who is feeling those things is probably unconsciously propagating bad vibes. why would you want to feel that way in the first place? it's not very human.
Surprised he died of natural causes and not from someone snapping and assassinating his ass.
If someone were to assassinate him, especially after excommunication, it would just make the WBC happier and feel like they're right. So props to everyone who didn't assassinate him.
I lol at how it seems Neverkanever seems to actually support what he's doing, I mean look at the ratings.
Sad someone died, but at least he's finally gone
Ain't gonna see him in heaven.
I think what would really be poetic justice is if nobody showed up at his funeral
From Megan Phelps-Roper, Phelps' granddaughter (she left the church a while back, and, though she was an active member toward the end, has been considered the more "reasonable" Phelps. . .she even developed a friendship with Kevin Smith around the time he made the movie Red State, while she was still in the church).
We lost human garbage today, but she lost her grandfather.

too.

Good fucking riddance
Crossing my fingers that nobody tries to rally up some revenge funeral picket. Leave them, let them have their funeral. Actions speak louder than words and all.
The fact that you even thought that proves that he fucking won, because that's exactly something he'd do.
you're still saying this? what exactly makes you think that he gives a shit whether or not people hate him like he hates them?
what is he, the fucking joker? why do you think what he really wanted all along was some symbolic victory over humanity?
hed win if gay people stopped existing, not if people fucking hate him. think before posting for once.

It's makes us no better than them by being vindictive. Rallying the troops and being all "FUCK YOU FRED" about it isn't right.
Wasn't Fred a prophet in there fucked up little religion to a point where he talked with god or something and showed him the error of mans ways?
That's like ex-communicating Jesus
That's hate speech against his religion though.
I don't mean to say that I agree with picketing his funeral
(which most likely won't be very easy, seeing as they'll probably arrange the funeral on their own somewhere secluded), but are you saying that only things done to them can be classified as "hate speech", or are you simply pointing out the hypocrisy?
I honestly hope Fred Phelps doesn't burn in Hell.
Not that his policies wouldn't earn him a VIP spot there, mind you. However, I do hope that instead of just going to Hell or wherever else the wicked may go, he gets a chance to change and redeem himself in whatever afterlife may be out there.
Perhaps, if Fred Phelps still exists beyond death, he will get a chance to become a better person, despite his horrid failures in life. Everyone deserves a second chance, even the most wicked of sane men can change if they see the error of their ways. And if he had some sort of mental illness, then I feel he deserves a shot at redemption, if not a free pass of sorts, even more than if he was sane.
I hope he doesn't burn in Hell, because no one who has lived, is living and ever will live deserves eternal torment for their mistakes and mental scars. Good luck to you in whatever afterlife may await the dead, Fred.
I bet that his funeral would be private instead of public. He still deserves all of the hate he's getting in my opinion.
RIP Phelps, you were a defender of the American lifestyle. You will be sorely missed.

I'm pointing out the hypocrisy. If you claimed "hate speech" when this man picketed funerals and demonized gays, then how can you justify picketing his funeral over his religious beliefs?

why didnt i think of this :(

I feel sad for him, in the sense that he never got the chance to change, or the chance to see that he was wrong. It's really sad that there is still people out there who think like him. I won't mourn his death, but I'll feel sorry for him that he never got to enjoy life.

Serial killers are usually in jail and are getting what's coming to them, one way or the other.
This man caused thousands of people unnecessary grief in an already shitty situation, and people for the most part could not get any sort of justice.

He lived to be 84. The WBC was founded in 1955, almost 60 years ago. He had plenty of time to change.
Can't say I'll miss him, but can't say I'll celebrate either.
Glad a man as hateful as him is gone but a new shepard will tend to his flock of ignorance.
And the wheel will spin on and on and on.

True, but you understand what I mean, it's sad he couldn't change. even with all that time.
I find the concept of valuing all human life, regardless of who the person was, both noble and stupid and I am entirely certain that there is no human alive who can actually uphold this ideal.
When you think of Hitler, do you think "How awful, one of the worst people to live in the modern world. Sure is a shame he's dead, though."
No? Exactly.

Literally nobody is saying it's a shame that he's dead. We're just against the idea of celebrating a death.
Fred Phelps was a bad man that raised a bunch of terrible people to do terrible things, but that doesn't mean we should have a goddamn party now that he's dead. The only reason we even know of the WBC is because we keep putting them on TV, we keep posting on Facebook and Twitter about how terrible, and keep giving them attention, so what will yet another protest achieve?
Nothing, because fighting hate and anger with hate and anger is just fucking dumb. As someone earlier in this thread said, we should respond with compassion by letting him go.
