I honestly think nerds (who are often people of intellect and unpopular) have a type of napoleon syndrome where if they have the opportunity to be socially superior to someone, they'll take it in a heartbeat, and if that means ridiculing a fellow scientist, they'll do it. All to make up for being less socially accepted or less popular.
It's kind of typical for humans to do, but I find nerds do it more often and I think it is to compensate for social deficiencies.

Science can be a bit of a popularity contest, if my dad's experience in NASA is to be believed.

Why would you say that scientists are less socially accepted or less popular?
A lot of scientists aren't nerds. I would say the good majority of college students who go into hard sciences aren't socially awkward.
That said, I knew some guy who worked at NASA who was a 100% hipster and nerd. He was featured on kotaku a year or two ago for having all of these tattoos on his back :v:.

They're catty, vindictive and ruthless to their peers and arrogant towards everyone else.
