There's a competitor that tried to do just that. It's called Dailymotion.
No, it didn't succeed, and neither will this.
tbh dailymotion's UI is a pretty crappy experience
And Vimeo.
i wouldn't say vimeo is a direct competitor to youtube, it's aimed at a different audience
Youtube will be a real gigantic pain in the ass to compete with but it definitely needs competition, Google couldn't give a single ounce of shit about the people who use the site, as long as they have the complete monopoly they are just going to restrict the site more and more every year
I want this to succeed but it probably won't..
The problem is people want there to be an alternative to Youtube but whenever one pops up they dismiss it because it isn't as big and developed as Youtube from the get go. These things take time, and people just aren't patient enough.
I'm surprised Yahoo is even trying in the first place. I remember they bought out Tumblr last year, but did they really do anything with it or make some kind of difference? I think they should just stick to e-mail services and its old, outdated search engine designed for senior citizens using IE7 and default Windows XP with no service packages.
I've hated googletube ever since they switched channel browsing from a page number system to the "load more" button that means if you watch a video and then go back when done watching it, instead of going to the page you were on and being able to find the next video, you get shot back to the top of the page and have to hit "load more" a thousand fucking times to find where you were.
Yahootube hopefully can at least provide competition.
Holy shit I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks that's the stupidest design ever.
People can say "Just open the video in a new tab" but that defeats the purpose of user friendly design. It's a normal thing to be able to click on a link(such as for a video) and then use a mouse gesture to go back. One tab for all you do on that set of links. And it should return you to exactly where you left off.
But no, Youtube has that stupid load more system.
