Rate this clocks, but germany does not like to relive what hitler did. So doing a nazi salute infront of their government office is a disgrace and offensive remark. Regardless it was done a while ago, they do not like to see this shit anymore.
Officer, I was just shielding my eyes from the sun so I could see the beautiful architecture.
Most countries have them. In America, for example, walking around in public fondling your balls would get you a ticket for public indecency because it's a forbidden gesture.
Well shit thanks for the warning.
I think people who arrest others for using Hitler's solute, especially in this context might be completely missing the point. Irony-o-meter is not sufficient.
I find that a pretty ironic law and it's not going to stop people from believing in what they want to.
It's a part of a series of laws that (in simple terms, as far as I understand) exist purely to "protect" Germans from themselves (Please someone correct me if I have heard wrong over the years), it is the same reason that some games are censored in Germany. Personally I think some of the laws are outdated, but it is the law. From what I have always heard displaying any sort of nazi symbol etc (unless in a historical context) is illegal and has a mandatory 6 month jail sentence attached to it, is this case? I seem to remember that a few years ago a forum I visit that is hosted in Germany had to shut for a few days to remove some stuff that had been spammed over it to comply with certain laws. It's a bit stupid of the person who did it to do it to be honest. [editline]28th February 2011[/editline]
So they arrested someone over some stupid joke?
The law is the law. If you steal something as a joke you would probably still be arrested for theft.
The law is the law.
Yeah I'm sure Anne Frank took comfort in that, too. lol Point is that isn't an argument and once again, completely missing the point. Are you German? Do Germans really have this backwards thinking about their history?
The law is the law. If you steal something as a joke you would probably still be arrested for theft.
Except a guy just raised his arm, OH GOD HE JUST KILLED MILLIONS OF JEWS BY DOING THAT. talk about overreacting, seessh... and pretty much every single German I've met is not at all like that, censoring the media and symbols to "protect the people" is just plain retarded.
talk about overreacting, seessh... and pretty much every single German I've met is not at all like that, censoring the media and symbols to "protect the people" is just plain retarded.
Yeah i think its unfair to say everyone is effected, i remember seeing this video a while back
Yeah I'm sure Anne Frank took comfort in that, too. lol Are you German? Do Germans really have this backwards thinking about their history?
You really cannot compare the two seriously. This is about breaking a very simple law that is very simple not to break, are you seriously trying to compare it to the killing of over 6 million people? The point is if you go to another country you have to follow their laws no matter how stupid they may be. This case is similar to the case a few years ago about a British couple who had sex on a beach in Dubai, they were surprised / annoyed that they had been arrested for breaking a law. And no I am not German, I just know a bit about laws in various countries so I cannot answer that question. Maybe a German could.

They do not want you thinking they're still with the nazi party. You simply don't go to other countries and make "jokes" about their previous dictators that lit the world on fire. Where is your sense of respect?
I'm sorry, but if you are offended by somebody doing a Nazi salute then you are a huge pussy. It's a physical movement people, you lift one arm up and raise it above your head. Oh, I know; it is shocking!

Germany really is not the only country that takes offence to people making light of a bad patch in their history.
"We are so ashamed of the old Nazi Germany, so let's arrest everyone that reminds us of it and pretend it never happened!"
I find that making laws forbidding the nazi salute is the opposite of pretending it never happened, but maybe that's just me. The signal the law is trying to send you is "This symbol is a manifestation of a terrible event in our history, and because of this experience we will not allow nazism to be normalized in society".
I guess germany tries as hard as they can to hide all traces of the nazi regime. but i cant blame them
They should get rid of these stupid laws soon. The longer time goes on the more people who lived during World War Two who would be likely "Offended" by it are decreasing in numbers. It's stupid, getting arrested for something like saying the holocaust never happened would be like if you said the world was flat and you get arrested for it.

First, look at his user name. Second, use your intellectual abilities to draw to a conclusion that this guy is either: A) A troll. B) A moron. C) Has Aspergers D) All of the above.
I went to a museum with a wax sculpture of Hitler in it and got my picture taken with my arm around his shoulder. If I were in Germany at the time, I'd probably be executed.
And why would anyone think that ? they're just damaging themselves by doing this, arresting a tourist because he raised his hand on the air, Oh yes, that will sure leave the rest of the world relieved...
Because they need to be extremely vigilant towards any signs of nazism gaining foothold in the country. Nazism and other racist/bullshit ideologies has no place in Democracy, however contradictory that may sound.
You don't go to someone elses home to make fun of the previous owners, do you?
What ? what does that even mean ? off course I'll make fun of Hitler, he was terrible, that's the whole point of the joke.
What ? what does that even mean ? off course I'll make fun of Hitler, he was terrible, that's the whole point of the joke.
Go to Germany and start making Nazi jokes then. You obviously see its fine, and they're just overreacting. So just go there, wear your gestapo uniform, make the obligtory salute, swear the death to the jews and to the rise of the aryan race. its all a joke right? And if they arrest you, tell them "You're overreacting". They'll probably let it slide past, make a few jokes too. You'll leave germany making a few friends, and some new stories. [editline]28th February 2011[/editline] For bonus points, get a soap box, a speaker and a microphone. Recite atleast one of hitlers speeches in a large public forum. For the gold, do it while dressed up as Hitler.
You're exaggerating.
You're being defensive.

On the other hand, some guy raised his hand for a photo and got arrested and his camera confiscated, so uhh yeah, i do think that is overreacting.

How is it peaceful demonstration? I would say its more on the lines on instigation and being a nuisance. If you go to Disney world, and start going around prancing around saying Walt Disney was a Nazi, saluting and doing the march. You're going to get the same treatment. No one wants to hear, listen, or relive a moment where a great tragedy was performed. You're being impudent.
I would say its more on the lines on instigation and being a nuisance.
Sure, but a single Canadian guy raising his hand for a picture however, is not.
It's the same as burning a flag or something. It's just an insult to our country. It's not like it's hard not to break this law.
Sure, but a single Canadian guy raising his hand for a picture however, is not.
So a guy was trying to make a funny, did a Nazi salute in front of the German parliament building. Got arrested for being rude and distasteful. I guess thats one picture that won't make it to facebook. Too bad the German officals don't find it funny, maybe you should write them a letter. Fun fact: The guy who wrote the comics for the popular "Electric Retard" is banned from Germany, for writing comics about nazis. From his own home. The outrage!
