Canadian Tourist arrested after giving the nazi salute

Honestly, the guy meant no harm, he was just dicking around and he accidentally broke some obscure law that he wasn't aware of.
Fun fact: The guy who wrote the comics for the popular "Electric Retard" is banned from Germany, for writing comics about nazis. From his own home. The outrage!
I know right, censor is so cool!
Obscenity laws should never be put in place. What they boil down to is "this is offensive and we don't like it, so don't do it."

Does a country not have the power to decide what they want, and what they don't want?

Of course they do, but that doesn't mean they should impose their values on others. Ideally, laws should never be based on what is considered to be "taboo," (as obscenity laws are) because such things are highly subjective and subject to change at the snap of a finger. Also, taboos do not physically harm people in any way.
Don't mention the war.

Even if Hitler was bad, 6 months?

I'm sorry, but if you are offended by somebody doing a Nazi salute then you are a huge pussy. It's a physical movement people, you lift one arm up and raise it above your head. Oh, I know; it is shocking!
It's what it represents.
He was from Quebec thats where all the asshole Canadians come from.
It wouldn't matter if it represented a regime that raped and murdered a million babies in the span of a week. There is no justification for arresting or fining a person for using a gesture which poses no physical threat.

I don't see why you're going off on why this is a taboo, the German government doesn't like people doing stunts like this. They're sick of people thinking that the Republic of Germany is the Third Reich still. Even if they dont, and its just a silly mindless joke, the government is still tired of it.
No one likes their dark past relived because someone is being immature.
"Let's avoid becoming a fascist dictatorship by banning things we don't like".
ITT: Dumb generic tourists who go to a country and make themselves look stupid and putting them to shame.
But seriously what a dumb thing to do I thought it was common knowledge that you got arrested for this in Germany.
Idiot.
Most countries have them.
In America, for example, walking around in public fondling your balls would get you a ticket for public indecency because it's a forbidden gesture.
Not really fair though. Sometimes balls get too hot, and you need to do so to give em' some fresh air. :haw:

What I got from this is that anyone who is from another country doesn't have to follow the rules even if it is highly offensive.

From that.

You're reading too much into it. By "others" I meant their citizens and visitors.

You may think that Democracy means everyone can propagate for whatever they like, but it does not. Nazism, both historically and today, is a threat to the civilized democratic society and suppressing such ideologies through legal means is wholly justified as a defensive action.
They're deeply ashamed of what they did in the past.
They don't want people supporting it.
i thought everybody in germany was nazi's

You should still respect a countries values and laws and way of life even if your not used to it.
Can't you be shot if you do this in Austria?
I don't see why you're going off on why this is a taboo
?
I don't think I said anything that would indicate that I don't know why the "nazi salute" is taboo.

That's true, but how exactly does that justify the existence of the law?
I don't know why Germany is so uptight about those things... They've paid their dues, it was generations ago... I think we can skip 6 month jail sentences for just making a gesture
To many people these days don't respect other countries on holiday.
For example when I go somewhere on holiday I take the time to learn basic words like Hello, Goodbye and thank you.
It just gives a better impression and shows that you are not some dumb tourist who is confused at why no one is speaking English.
Well... at least we've still got the Kaiser.

The Emperor with the Manliest Mustache which ever did roam the Domain of Holy Europe, the Emperor with an Ardent Love of Grandiose and Extravagant Battleships, the Emperor with a Helmet that had a Gigantic Eagle/Bird on it- beloved Crest of the Kaiserreich-- which makes even the Hair of Nicholas Cage subpar in comparison...

I don't think anyone is really getting six months for this, it's just the "max" punishment which is probably never handed out. I'd assume basically everyone gets off with a warning and possibly a fine.
Guys you gotta learn how to respect other countries laws, than the West may progress as a whole.
what a bunch of fascists
I throw up the nazi salute almost every day, as a joke really...
It's replaced the high five in my circle of friends, instead of the hands meeting vertically one person does the nazi salute and the other does the officer hand-over-shoulder salute thing
Recently at church (well, a funeral and other events) we've had to do the Nazi Salute to bless someone. It's quite awkward and a lot of people do hesitate.
The newspaper says police arrived within seconds
What? do they have special forces all around the country in standby?
Man deserves death sentence
What? do they have special forces all around the country in standby?
Police =/= Special Forces.
And breaking the law infront of the Reichstag, where there is certainly bound to be Police nearby, is not the best idea.
