I don't see how this is newsworthy. Everyone stayed polite, let alone violence.
Really, both sides have good points. It is illegal for businesses to discriminate, but private people can. Really, it depends on how much of a business company the B&B is. If it's just an unregistered, unlicensed deal, then it goes one way. If it's fully incorporated and professional, it goes another.
I'd hate to be the judge for this case. Either way, someone loses, and whoever wins doesn't win much at all.
I don't even care if large businesses discriminate. If Walmart doesn't allow gays to shop there, Target or Kmart will. So they'll pick up the business that Walmart loses.
She's a meanie for doing that, but I guess she can do what ever she wants to, as it's her house.
The gay couple should feel lucky. It'd be much more unpleasant if they stayed with her.
Good point.
Even if it is her own private house, it is still a business. What, she can tell black people they can't stay there because they are black? No, not if she is making money from it.
Yes, it is her business. It is her right and privilege to deny anyone she wants. It is our right and privilege to boycott them or whatever.
Bit of a bitch to turn them away, but her house, she can do what she wants.
It's her house so she can do what she wants, even if she is a bitch about it.
To the people who agree with her...
would it be different if they were black? Or Hindu?

Ninjad apparently
No, actually, it wouldn't. The people who wrote the law wisely realized that people will always be bigoted assholes. Private citizens are given the right to be bigoted assholes about anything. I could run a B&B and refuse anyone with a "C" in their name, on the grounds that a K or S would work just as well. Even though that logic makes no sense, I could do it. I could refuse Welsh people. I could (and probably would) refuse Scientologists. I could make it a no-Mac-user zone. I could discriminate based on phrenology, or blood type, or astrological sign.
In America, private people can discriminate. Even businesses can, to a much lesser extent. Generally, bed and breakfasts are considered private, for whatever reason.

I think it's just illegal to deny someone employment based on race, sexuality(some states), religion, disabilities, etc.
Hell, I would never let a furry in my house.
I don't see anything wrong with declining someone IN YOUR HOUSE.
If I don't like a gay to be in my house, I don't let them in.
Dick move.
why the fuzz about it
It's wrong being against gays in my opinion but it's their bed and breakfast.

I agree with the owner.
Fuck what the owner wants. They're shitting over civil liberties. They're offering a SERVICE. It's like a company owning a bus and not letting any gay people ride on it (No pun intended) because it's against their bullshit homophobic policy. HOW ARE THEY GOING TO GET HOMOSEX OUT OF THE SHEETS NOW? Jesus Christ, there is one thing a capitalist society is suppose to do right, and that's only care about peoples money rather than which sex they jack off to at night.
What these people did was wrong. Do they deserve to be hung? No, but they need to get over their shit and not give a damn.
What the fuck is a bed and breakfast?
I don't get why the fact that she lives there makes it a less legitimate business.
What the fuck is a bed and breakfast?
According to this article, a tiny version of a hotel that homophobics run.

Bus companies aren't private. They are funded through the state. If a private company came and decided they wanted to get in on the mass transit market, they could deny whoever they wanted based on whatever they wanted.
She is earning money from a Bed and Breakfast business. What she has done is illegal and she should be fined.

Bus companies in the UK are not run or funded by the state.

It's someone's house that they let strangers stay in for a fee.

Alright, they are in the USA. My mistake.

I don't care if it's a bed and breakfast or The Nazi Communist Party, the 'we can remove anyone for any reason' rule is utterly bullshit. It's illegal to refuse people based on sex, religion or beliefs in Europe for a reason.
i hate faggot

I didn't read the article, is their business registered somehow? If not, they are not offering a commercial service.
According to UK discrimination law private companies can't refuse the provision of goods or services based on sexual orientation.
Hotels can't refuse them but I'm not sure if Bed and Breakfasts fall under the following exception.
Where the arrangement involves taking into the family home and treating as members of the family, children, elderly persons or person requiring a special degree of care and attention.
link
Now I read it back that exception isn't particularly clear
I didn't read the article, is their business registered somehow? If not, they are not offering a commercial service.
If she's collecting money for it, I think it has to be registered. I haven't checked.

Rage.
Please be civil with your replies. It is quiet frustrating when people get pissy over an in house bed ,and breakfest.
It doesn't matter that it's her house. It's a business, and she can't discriminate based on sexual orientation. A hotel owner owns the hotel in the same capacity that a bed and breakfast owner owns the bed and breakfast so the same rules should apply. Whether or not the person also lives in the establishment is completely irrelevant.

One difference between a Bed & Breakfast and a bus service is that the bus is a public transport service, people might need it to get around, go to work/education, visit friends etc. Whereas if you can't get into a given B&B for whatever reason you can just find another one. Poor example. To clarify I'm not defending anybody.
I don't think I'd want to stay at a hotel that only admitted me because they were forced to.
