You know the law used to say that black people and women had no right to vote.
(I'm not sure if it still says that in England, but here it doesn't.)
lol
Yeah and that changed, didn't it?
This is a modern, progressive law which directly attacks the type of thinking that led to that law's creation. You can't just pick out bad laws from the past as an argument that all laws are bad.

They're still that way with beastiality, I just don't get it. Just live and let live already!
Also kinda ironic that you seem to hint America is ahead of the UK in regards to civil rights legislation yet that is what you are attacking
Maybe the lady just isn't ready to accept Gay couples in her home? Is that really so wrong?
For many of you I think the idea of gay people is so common but for many older people this is still just too far out there.

Hmm, would I rather allow the people to deny service to someone on the basis of preference, or allow the government to deny someone the right to make their own policies that are based on their beliefs.
Hmmm. Discrimination, or mind police.
Tough choice.

That's fair enough but then maybe she should think twice about opening up her home to the public
That's fair enough but then maybe she should think twice about opening up her home to the public
By opening a private business. Rite.

It's not mind police, she can think what she want.
If you're going to pick and choose whether to offer a service to someone on the basis of something as trivial as sexual orientation then maybe capitalism isn't for you.

She's offering her home to the public by starting a B&B business. What's not to get?
If you're going to pick and choose whether to offer a service to someone on the basis of something as trivial as sexual orientation then maybe capitalism isn't for you.
It's not just a service, their opening up they're (guest) house to them. It's not some building that they put up specifically for their business, it's the place that they (or more precisely, their guests) live, which brings it into their private life.
t's the place that they (or more precisely, their guests) live, which brings it into their private life.
Yes but that is part and parcel of running a B&B. You run it will the full intention that you make have to make some sacrifices in opening up your house to strangers.
And generally B&B owners tend to set aside part of their house specifically for visitors
I thought you could pick and choose however you like. If Francis from left4dead wanted to rent a room from me I'd be thinkin twice..

It doesn't make them an exception.
[editline]02:16AM[/editline]
And I'm not saying that you have to accept ANYONE if you're running a B&B.
For example refusing someone a room because they intend to have a swinger's party in your house does not violate the Equality Act
They're still that way with beastiality, I just don't get it. Just live and let live already!
So you support having sex with animals?
Fucking weirdo.

Would you make up your mind god damn it.
Debatable.
She doesn't have to let anyone into her house if she doesn't want to.
Not debatable.

Nothing is stopping her from refusing to open up her house.
i can't help but notice everybody in this topic is just restating what others are saying in their own words.
over and over.

No. Any part of the house included as part of the deal is considered part of a business. Any expenses to upkeep the guest house (everything from painting down to the dryer sheets used to clean the bedsheets) can be written off as a business expense, and technically that breakfast may be subject to health codes and various other laws (although I believe there are separate health codes for bed and breakfast establishments). If UK law says that you can't discriminate your customers because they are gay, that is ALL business. In America, you'll just get 4chan leaving death threats on your answering machine and maybe some media attention that immediately goes away, if you're a private business.
There are fine lines between business and private, the law makes that very clear.

If you're implying that I'm merely trying to be a nonconformist, you're wrong. I do disagree with her beliefs and I think her decision was a bad one, but it was her decision to make and it was in the privacy of her own home(s). I'm willing to fight for the right of others' preferences, but the rights of being able to live on your own personal beliefs comes before that.
Nothing is stopping her from refusing to open up her house.
Of course she doesn't have to accept anyone, but she IS choosing to accept people and by operating herself as a business she has to comply to relevant laws.
Since you failed to read it correctly the first time I'll post this again
4.—(1) It is unlawful for a person (“A”) concerned with the provision to the public or a section of the public of goods, facilities or services to discriminate against a person (“B”) who seeks to obtain or to use those goods, facilities or services
So you support having sex with animals?

Ah but in a few years we will be socially acceptable and you will have to let us sleep in your B&B.
I was making a point about the changes in social acceptance. Things that you think are warped, strange, bizarre and unacceptable may become tomorrows norms.
The lady that runs the B&B is most likely atleast in her 60's. <<I'm just taking a hipshot guess there. When she was growing up, most of her life, gays have been considered socially unacceptable. For her the social tide has changed and she just didn't change with it.
There are fine lines between business and private, the law makes that very clear.
You do realize there are private business, right.
You do realize there are private business, right.
A private business is still a business, and thus separate from private

Whatever the reason you disagree with her refusal to allow someone she doesn't want in her house to sleep in her house and eat her food doesn't matter. I'm not arguing it because I don't personally know it. What I am arguing is that she should be able to.

Discriminate? That is a broad sword there. Discriminate on what grounds?
A private business is still a business, and thus separate from private
[Adjective] [Noun] isn't [Adjective]. Rite, rite.

Animals cannot give consent, I doubt it will become socially acceptable in a "few years"
If you think THAT will become acceptable, logic dictates you will believe CP, Necrophilia, and all that other weird and a sick shit will become acceptable as well.

More likely then not, when I was your age, gays were not allowed in most B&Bs.

I agree that people should be able to refuse people's access to their home for any reason, and they can.
But a B&B and a private home are not the same thing.
You seem to think some gays just turned up and demanded access to her house, she's the one inviting people in.
