I agree that people should be able to refuse people's access to their home for any reason, and they can.
But a B&B and a private home are not the same thing.
You seem to think some gays just turned up and demanded access to her house, she's the one inviting people in.
Is she not allowed to have her own business policies?
Discriminate? That is a broad sword there. Discriminate on what grounds?
If you click the link it goes into detail, I was just posting the shorthand.
Is she not allowed to have her own business policies?
Not if they discriminate against gays.
More likely then not, when I was your age, gays were not allowed in most B&Bs.
Uh, are you in your 60s?
Not if they discriminate against gays.
Not according to the law.
And as we all know, the law is infallible and never changes, nor does it ever interfere with things that need no governing.

It will no doubt be amended but I really doubt this law is going away.
Fair enough if you disagree with it, I don't. As long as it is law she should acknowledge it and abide by it or face the consequences.
Uh, are you in your 60s?
You first..
On-topic: After reading there, they passed a law there in '06 making it illegal to discriminate against same sex couples. While running a business it is important to know the laws surrounding said business. The owners should have known the law ans allowed them in. Whether they liked it or not.

+1 for internet detective!
So lets see, 24 years ago I was 15. That would be in 1985. Long before the 2006 bill was passed for forced non-discrimination.
whoops, forced ^^
I hate being gay sometimes. So much discrimination.

I'm 35, you've got me beat by a few years but I don't think homosexuals were that discriminated against in 2006, class action lawsuit?
Nothing is stopping her from refusing to open up her house.
The whole issue lies in the fact that she DOES open her house, except to gays. If she wanted to refuse everyone, she could.
Lots of people use their business as their place of residence. I can't count the number of convenience stores and little markets that I've seen that are attached to a house. Living at your place of business doesn't exempt you from the law.

No. Your place of business happening to be your house is what makes this different.

The point that I was making, and being 35 you should get it, is that things that was gross 20 years ago and would get you stoned in the street, are A-OK now and everyone should be accepting of them. Although some people aren't just ready to jump on that bandwagon.
Social norms are a strange thing and they can change drastically over short periods of time.

That wasn't much of a reply there. Not really sure what you were getting at?

How? She obviously had a license to operate a B&B which makes her house more than just a house.

Are you arguing what you think the law says, or what you think the law should say?
Are you arguing what you think the law says, or what you think the law should say?
I was/am wondering the same thing.
Are you arguing what you think the law says, or what you think the law should say?
The law should always say what it should say.
The law should always say what it should say.
Hmm, yea, I'm still scratching my head....

Answer the question

I already have. I've said at least once already that I don't know what the law states in England, but that doesn't concern me. If the law does intrude on who she is allowed to invite into her own home, then it is a bad one.

She's not simply inviting them in for tea. She operates a business. She lets straight people use the business, and under England's laws, it's illegal for her to deny service to same-sex couples.
If she was simply having people over to stay, the law would have no effect. However, she runs a business, and she is clearly discriminating. Just because you run a business out of your home it isn't exempt from regulations and laws.

And, of course, laws are always right.
And, of course, laws are always right.
In this case, the law is right.
Discrimination is bad.

Yeah, because this was obviously disruptive, and ended up with both parties angry at the other. That woman was such a homophobic bigot.
You people act like they had a fist fight in the front lawn.

What if the woman had disallowed blacks from staying in her B&B?
What if the woman had disallowed blacks from staying in her B&B?
I would argue the exact same thing.
For this analogy to be accurate, she would have had to calmly and politely explain that it was against her convictions to house black people, and then they would have to calmly and politely as well ask for a refund on what they already paid her, which she happily does.

They were left without accommodations for the night.
The law says you can't discriminate against blacks. You think if we didn't have laws like that, blacks wouldn't have trouble finding places to eat/stay in the South?
