iPhones with broken screens are pretty mainstream. Everyone has one these days.
I have dropped my iPod touch on many surfaces and it has not broke or cracked. If you break or crack your apple products, you are retarded.
Not defending apple, I hate the company too.

Insulting somebody's intelligence because of random chance of cracking an electronic object.
gg
yes that just SCREAMS durable when its own packaging can scratch it up
I guess you guys don't get that it's aluminum, it's one of the softer metals. It's really easy to bend or make marks in like in this case. It's not really part of the 'design', it's just aluminum. That's about it.
iPhone 5s now with wear and tear as an option when purchasing.
It's the next big thing.
you'll have to pay extra
I used to really like Apple's hardware but now the quality is going into the shitter and their software is getting worse, and now they're just suing everybody to avoid competition.
I'm wondering if it'll ever get to the point where even Apple fans get tired of them.

The fewer fans apple has, the hipper using macs becomes.
guys I don't like apple either but I'm pretty sure the amount of damage required to scratch the outside is way less than what's required to actually fuck the thing up
you guys are overreacting a lil' bit
Did they package it in sandpaper?

Ehh, the problem is that it's scratched when it turns up at your front door - if that isn't some kind of a problem, I don't know what it is.
Did they package it in sandpaper?
yes, but instead of sand, it's diamond particles.

Material choice IS part of the design, especially for casing.
Guessing they are saying it's normal so they don't have to refund them...
Not trying to defend Apple because I know how much hatred runs through Facepunchers' veins for the company but the original message sent to Apple was this:
"I love my black and slate iPhone 5, but I've been seeing some scuffs, scratches, and marks throughout the band around the phone along with many others. What should we all do? Any plans to fix this?"
IMO the guy's question wasn't very specific to the fact that the iPhone came out of the box with these scratches. Therefore it was very easy for Paul Schiller to bypass that whole idea and simply comment that the device is prone to scratches because of use.
If the guy had specifically stated that his device came out of its box scratched, Apple would have commented appropriately. They simply aren't that stupid to ignore such a thing. They are just stupid to the extent that they hope no one will bring it up in a fashion that Apple are obliged to comment on it.
I mean, I use Apple hardware but I'm not at the point where I'll defend whatever Apple do. The scuffs aren't normal, that's just shitty quality control. I hope people are joking when they say that they'll be damaging their phones to make them look 'cool'.

Well, people do it to jeans; why not phones?
Well, people do it to jeans; why not phones?
I can't help but laugh a people that buy pre-worn jeans that looks like they were previously worn by Johnny castaway.
Well, people do it to jeans; why not phones?
When you pay about £500 for a phone, would you want it to look used?
Sounds like a cop out answer for shoddy phone construction. I may not be an expert, but I think aluminum is more durable than that. I mean, they make fucking spacecraft, aircraft, boats, and guns out of aluminum.
Well, people do it to jeans; why not phones?
It might just be me, but I think the "used" style looks pretty stupid.
Although comparing scratches on an electronic device to clothing styles is a bit silly.

At Apple headquarters during R&D of the iPhone 5:
"Hey guys should we make a more durable finish?"
"Naah scratch that!"
why don't they make their unibodies out of magnesium, anyway?
Dammit my 3GS isn't scuffing after almost 2 years. Can I get a refund or is that only for 5's that don't scuff?
so it really is a feature
why don't they make their unibodies out of magnesium, anyway?
Honest question, magnesium is harder and stronger. It's also lighter, and shouldn't they use the highest quality materials for the "highest quality" (yeah right) products?
Oh look, another anti-Apple circlejerk thread.
I always gauge how good their latest phone is by how much hate it gets from all the people who hate Apple. iPhone 5 must really kick ass.
