• After 15 months, Windows 8 has sold 100 million fewer copies than Windows 7 did

Frankly, given all the shit windows 8 gets, these aren't bad sales figures.
Frankly, given all the shit windows 8 gets, these aren't bad sales figures.
Its also a bit of a false comparison. You can't compare Windows 8 sales to Windows 7 directly. People were getting 7 to get rid of the then 10 year old XP or the bad taste of Vista. People were ready to jump ship almost immediately after release. That sort of market didn't exist with 8's release. Windows 7 is still considered very good, and its grabbed the majority of XP users, who were the primary ones buying new PCs anyway. I would be naive to say that Metro has no influence on possible poorer sales, but Windows 7 was just the right OS at the right time. Highly doubt MS will be able to pull those kinds of sales with even Windows 9, EVEN if they released it in the next year with the Start Menu in its full glory.
It couldn't have been more different what the hell are you talking about? The one thing I can't stand in W8 is the lack of being able to boot into safemode. You have to do it through MSconfig. That is a huge pain when a computer has some sort of virus that blocks functionality in normal mode.

The old method is actually still there, but the standard boot-loader disables it by default (I presume to shave a half second or so off boot). Just run in a elevated command prompt: bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy And tadaaaa [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14575796/Phots/IMG_20140214_213409.jpg[/t] [editline]14th February 2014[/editline] Although, general if Windows 8 fails to boot, it will go into the safe mode boot menu on the next attempt. If it fails to even get that far, safe mode won't work anyway, since it IS booted in safe mode.
Windows 8.1 is fantastic imho.
My only real gripe with w8 is the shitdick retarded charms bar and the complexity of accessing the fucking directory and control panel. It's a pain in the ass from my experience, that's why I stuck with 7, I don't have a touch screen, this fucking hover the mouse in the corner and dick around for a second to maybe get a fucking menu to appear is retarded. Want to make windows 9 good MS? You can keep the damn metro start menu, that's totally fine, but give me a fucking two click process to get to the control panel and computer directory. I use multiple hard drives for storage, and without opening a folder on the desktop and clicking down to my computer, I have no idea how to get there on win8 that isn't too many extra damn steps.

Two clicks. :v:
Managed to set up everything on my PC with Win 8 (chrome, steam and that shit) within the hour, please explain to me how it is stopping you, I am genuinely curious.
Every time we tried downloading Chrome, it spat an error out and wouldn't let us download it. We installed some updates that were required by the manufacturer, which at least let us get Chrome. (It still gives us the error, though.) In regards to 8.1, we kept clicking the link on Microsoft's site to take us to the Store, but there was no update in sight. The FAQ suggested that our version of 8 didn't have enough updates to be able to accept 8.1. Lo and behold, there were 90 or so updates we didn't know about. It's installing them now, so hopefully we'll be able use the dang thing eventually. So, technically, you could attribute both of those things to our own impatience. Now that I think about it, getting locked out of downloading things from IE and being unable to do anything without installing a bunch of updates to the crap that came preloaded on the laptop might actually be the manufacturer's fault. I would go on about what they did wrong, but that would be off-topic. I guess I'll give 8 the benefit of the doubt and try again tomorrow. Oh, and then there was the time when Battery Life.exe stopped working. :v: I just thought that was funny.
imo windows 8 looks absolutely terrible like, it's probably a little hard to get into but not EXTREMELY difficult, that's not an issue. my problem with it is how bad it looks, and how huge the icons are on that new screen thingy. having to scroll so much to get to stuff i can easily access on other windows versions just isn't that appealing to me

It will probably cause more bugs and such. Stock Windows 8 is rock solid in terms of stability.
After having tried 8.1 and acknowledged it as a fully functional system with its own feel, I prefer Windows 7 on just a personal basis. B) Windows 7 - 0 Windows 8 - 0 (they're the same fucking thing minus the start menu shit people just pick what you prefer)
i hate hearing the bitching about metro because if you really hate it then just install classicshell or something yes its a bitch how microsoft doesnt include it but its not like metro is awful and unusable if you can get windows 8 for free then its a nice upgrade but if you have 7 already then just use that simple
it's not a bad OS it's just not worth the pricetag if you already have like windows 7 or vista installed
Windows 8 is ok, I like everything except for the fact that it just fucking tells you that it's going to turn off the computer and do an update. No option to delay, no option to abort. "Save your shit motherfucker, I'm going to blow your desktop away in 3..2...1..."

Do what was said above, try and delete some odd bits and bobs that don't come with stock, see if that changes anything.
Most people have been using the same environment for most of their lives, up to 20 years of the same thing. Then W8 comes along and completely changes things, people who don't know computers suddenly need to learn a whole new thing.
Computers seem like common sense to us, but surprisingly (or unsurprisingly), what you said applies to many corporations and people alike who use Windows but aren't too tech-savvy/don't care. At both of my previous jobs where CAD and pretty much anything computer-related was key to working, Windows 7 is the norm and they will not change; Probably not until Windows 9 or 10 comes out at the very least. The logic straight from my peers and bosses were "Why should we have to do a corporate-wide OS reintegration and waste valuable time relearning and reconfiguring an operating system when the one we have does exactly what we want just fine." My parents and friends feel the exact same way, minus the corporation. As cool as Windows 8 is, I don't think it is necessary for anybody to move up to Windows 8 unless they just want it for the sake of having something new. It just doesn't offer any big benefits and comes at the expense of a "learning curve," no matter how easy it may be for us. And yes, I am running Windows 8 and I like it.

On mine, I'm given a 3 day warning on the login screen by the power button.
That's in 7 as well, you could tell it to fuck off for a while.
You can't in w8. In 7 you could delay it by however many hours and do it every time, in w8 it tells you it will reboot in 14 minutes and then it just does. Though you can turn that thing off through registry or something. I have it off and it only tells me it is ready to update on the login screen without rebooting on its own.
I think that has more to do with the fact you're in Europe. There some sort of mandate by the EU that all Windows installs have to give you and option of what browser to use. You don't get that menu in the US, or probably most non-EU nations.
Doesn't really make sense as to why I've never seen anything about this, until upgrading to windows 8.1. Unless it doesn't apply to people who actually know what browsers are. [editline]15th February 2014[/editline]
You can't in w8. "Save your shit motherfucker, I'm going to blow your desktop away in 3..2...1..."
that was a problem I had with it at release (which was fixed with the above settings) but it's back to normal as of 8.1. It tells you you've got 3 days to restart your computer for updates, if you don't restart it by the end of that period it'll give you that screen but you can just tell it to hold off like before. Why is it pertinent to keep your computer running 3 days straight, I'm sure you're taking a nap at some point if you aren't running 8.1 there's a shitton of reasons to tell it to do the free upgrade.

Then again I shut the laptop down regularly so it has plenty of chances to run the updates. Maybe if you never turn your device off this might be a problem.
7 to 8 is not as big of an upgrade as xp to 7* so obviously not as many people got it *vista doesn't exist
Right, Gentoo is the distro to end all distros.
Gentoo is actually the distro I would give as an example of "operating system with learning curve" - Here's the guide to installing it for people who've done it a bunch of times before. The newbie guide has twelve chapters. None of it is particularly complex (in fact you can pretty much skip the first four chapters since they're about things like partitioning your disk and making sure your clock is set right), but I don't expect anyone to be able to just do all this from day one.
