Obscure Linux distros do not count. No usual consumer cares about installing Linux except for people who think it liberates them for some reason. Why do you think there's a distro called fedora?
Debian? An "obscure linux distro"?? Christ you're like the tryhard in another thread who stated that linux isn't run on any device he owns, yet he's on the internet and therefore there's at least a 90% chance that his fucking modem runs linux meaning he's just an ignorant fool. And there is a distro called Fedora because it was a new fork of Red Hat Software's desktop OS, Redhat. It was originally called Fedora Core, but the Core was dropped with what, Fedora 3?
10 years is a bit of an overstatement in many cases, but its generally where most experimentation happens. Any time there is a new standard, such as UEFI, some enthusiast will write software for it the day is announced, and have a semi working build for it in a week, where as with windows and osx, that may take 3 or 4 years. ZFS, while being a mostly Solaris and BSD project, is a good thing to look at when it comes to major innovation that neither windows or osx are even anywhere near in terms of performance or functionality.
And to add to that, Linux has a bunch more file systems to choose from, whereas Windows has only two default ones. Power users also find the terminal in Linux a very versatile tool to handle batch operations in less than a minute, through either a bash script (bash scripts are kind of like .bat files in Windows) or with a long one-liner command.
Well, Apple did atleast - maybe this is how they leverage their higher cost of hardware in a bid to retain/get more customers? If such is the trend (OS's going free) how would it impact Linux as a viable competitor in the future?
Linux would still have a stake on desktop OS's, just because its free to use doesnt mean its really free, there will always be OS fanatics that wont want to use Windows/OSx. Not to mention the licensing for Linux is much easier for a company than Windows/OSx, look at google you require written permission in order to have a windows machine. All of that said, its irrellevant, windows will never be free. Apple can afford to do this because they get most their money from the hardware, but Microsoft wont be giving their OS for free
And to add to that, Linux has a bunch more file systems to choose from, whereas Windows has only two default ones.
More doesn't always mean better, just because your OS CAN use HPFS doesn't mean you should.
More doesn't always mean better, just because your OS CAN use HPFS doesn't mean you should.
Yes, but having the choice to use it is usually better than it being denied because a suit at a long table decided you didn't need it.
I'm not a Mac user, but you get it *free* (Comes with the Apple Tax) with all Mac products. The only reason you'd buy it is if you wanted to run it on something other than a Mac.
Yeah just as you get a windows license "free" when you buy most computers. The fact that the costs are hidden, doesn't make it free. Considering the windows equivalent is essentially one of the strongest, most versatile terminals in the form of powershell which allows you to run .net commandlets. Most heavy users of bash I know tend to be sad they actually can't have powershell.
I'm confused. Does this mean I can upgrade to whatever jungle cat they're at now for free or what?

They hate them. CATS ARE DU- -ahem- sorry. But no more cat names for their OS Also your hardware has to support it.
cool, im stuck on 5.1 (leopard) can i just upgrade to lion? or is it mavericks only?
