On topic of vehicles falling off cliffs...
Natural Selection at work.
I might not be a driver myself, so I'm not sure about the viability of this, but would the stall render all brakes aboard the vehicle useless?
Uhh, no. With power-assisted hydrualic brakes you'd need to put more effort down to stop the vehicle, but the brakes would still function. Non-boosted hydraulic brakes would be entirely unaffected. Air brakes work on a reserve of air, so an engine stall would not effect them immediately, and most systems are designed so that the air pressure holds them off, so that if air loss occurs the brakes automatically apply. I'm thinking either driver panic or there was more wrong with that buss than just the engine. Could even be both.
Hyraulic brakes wouldn't work without an engine to keep the pressure up,
Incorrect. You would lose the vacuum assist, yes. But you would still have brakes. I've been driving without power brakes for five or six years now without issue.
Incorrect. Modern ABS systems are designed to allow you to press the brakes once after the engine power cuts out. Even disregarding that, once pressure is applied, it is maintained until the pedal is released.
It has little to do with ABS and everything to do with the power brake booster holding a vacuum reserve. When the booster worked my truck's brakes had three panic stops in 'em before the reserve depleted, yet it predates ABS by a good ten years.
Am I missing something? Why the hell is he reversing at that sort of speed?
This is absolutely terrible, but I couldn't help but remember this:
Even in a more developed country that would be a massive money sink.
More developed country? It's Taiwan.
More developed country? It's Taiwan.
Exactly.
Am I missing something? Why the hell is he reversing at that sort of speed?
Good job reading the article
The bus's engine stalled without warning on an uphill section of Hsinchu Route 60, leading the vehicle to slip backwards and off the road.

urgh, horrible shit. Reminds me of this one.
At least all the passengers got off before it tried to make it across.

Well according to the video the bus just disappeared.

"Oh man that's way worse that last year!" Now I remember why rally is a popular motorsport.
Sorry if it's disrespectful in anyway, but did the bus just freeze in mid air then get deleted from existence? It's like some sort of garry's mod error.
Hyraulic brakes wouldn't work without an engine to keep the pressure up, but assuming the bus had a handbrake it would have worked. He could have left it in gear too to stop it rolling.
Nope. If the pressure drops, the brakes kick in. A bus/truck with pneumatic (hydraulic brakes wouldn't even be affected. Do you see your brake fluid shoot out when you turn off the egnine?) brakes can't move until the engine has run long enough for the pressure to build up.
Wow, the guy in the video had ZERO reaction to the bus falling right the fuck off the cliff.
Wow, the guy in the video had ZERO reaction to the bus falling right the fuck off the cliff.
I think he's filming a screen
Wow, the guy in the video had ZERO reaction to the bus falling right the fuck off the cliff.
Even if that was true, so what? Are you gonna force people to yell "OH MY GOD!" and enter massive panic every time they witness something shocking? Not all people react the same to different situations. Some scream and flail, others drop their jaw, others turn on robot mode.
