My laptops running on an AMD processor...
so do many others?
Who knows, we may see the entrance of someone who can compete with intel, now that amd is mostly out of the picture.
I do hope at least somebody comes out with competition for intel. If nothing else, just to keep them in check.
Oh damn, I liked AMD, great price decent performance.
Next time I have to upgrade is going to be expensive.
My CPU is from AMD, man. I've had no problems with any AMD products and have been totally worth the budget. This is a day for PC gaming and computing which will live in infamy.
so do many others?
yeah but I'm the center of the universe so it only affects me

Intel will just probably blow any new competition out of the market faster than hell, so there will probably never be a "real" competition ever again unless they back down a bit.
Gotta buy some AMD gear for cheap then
Gotta buy some AMD gear for cheap then
I don't think they'll go down in price but rather up seeing as they're not going to be made anymore.

if it ever gets to a true monopoly it will be broken up
what WHY... AMD makes good cpu's
Shit.

If Intel gets a big enough monopoly going and a new competitor tries to step in then gets blown down, the government would step in.
They have policies to stop large companies pulling that shit.
what WHY... AMD makes good cpu's
intel is a few years ahead of AMD in r&d. AMD is trying to cut their losses
Source on this, please.
Any benchmark ever on them, basically + the TDP is just higher. They win in a few categories, but not much.
Sad news and Intel needed a competitor (to keep prices lower and to continue innovation), but Bulldozer was complete shit.
Let's break Intel up into several smaller companies and force them to compete.
Much like what happened to AT&T in the 70's.
Even though I like Intel, monopolies are never good
Plus, AMD made all the lower-performance CPU's that didnt cost alot
Might be good, if intel releases shit for high prices then smaller brands might get a chance and we might get some innovation through there, that would be best case scenario though... :suicide:
Ignoring that the set up costs are going to be extremely high considering that it's not like the processor market hasn't been established for years and chances are Intel already has their suppliers set up at the cheapest price physically possible.

We desperately need a new competitor to step into the arena and start making more x86_64 compliant stuff (i.e not ARM) or the market's going to strangle itself to death.

HP computers went down in price drastically when they were pulling out.
FUCK!
I don't wanna buy a fucking Intel chip to upgrade in the future, fuck me this sucks.

Yea but the way apple is pushing the market it wont happen

So you dont want 3d transistors?
Ivy Bridge is going to be awesome.
HP computers went down in price drastically when they were pulling out.
Yeah but the point is that with Desktops/Laptops, there are plenty of other manufacturers out there and so retailers had to lower their prices to actually move their stock of HP systems before the specs became outdated.
With CPUs, if you have an AMD socket motherboard, you absolutely have to get an AMD cpu for it and so there will still be demand for them for some time until people move over to Intel boards altogether. As there will be no more produced, the price is probably going to increase by a fairamount. A similar thing happened recently with DDR2 ram, as once DDR3 RAM became more widespread the price of DDR2 shot up for a while as it wasn't being produced as much, but there was still plenty of demand for it from people on older boards. Heck, there are still a fair amount of people buying DDR RAM for old systems.
I always thought amd based laptops were just all around better bang for your buck too. Thats a real shame.
Pretty sad story at the end of the day; plus we can't trust Intel not to be dicks and raise prices way up.

Apple's pushing Intel, not AMD. If AMD leave the market, Intel will have a full majority of the Desktop / Laptop CPU / Chipset market, which is not a good thing.
It was just a couple years ago when AMD was saying they weren't going to concentrate on mobile chips. That's when Atom was starting to take off.

Yes but apple is pushing more mobile chips than normal desktop chips. Apple is not going to make the monopoly go away anytime soon.

Atom sucked horribly.

Intel Atom is not that bad for what it is. My home fileserver/general networking needs server runs the atom.

I managed to fry a computer within 12 hours of buying it by installing a program on a laptop with atom.
