• AMD Not Competing with Intel Anymore, Goes Mobile

Intel you better not raise your prices too much
oh that's a shame. i bought an AMD processor that was far cheaper than an Intel CPU my friend bought and it turned out to even perform better than his. AMD's always been the cheapskate's option.
Does this mean a fall in prices of AMD CPU's?
They just can't keep adding so much power to a dead socket like AM3(+), sure it's nice that they keep backwards / forwards compatibility with the similar sockets, but the socket needs to go.
but that's the reason why they are so good for budget PC's. i haven't had to buy a motherboard for a very long time.
What do you mean, PC's are a vital tool within todays society. They will never die out unless something better comes along.
PC as in part by part built machine with custom CPU, GPU, HDD, ecetera, will mostly die out, within a decade, maybe two. It will be replaced by notebooks (yes, technically PCs, true, but not really in the commonly used sense), tablets, and smartphones. AMD is just diving into the new trend earlier.
Source on this, please.
i5-2500k has a 95W TDP, the 8 core bulldozer has a 125W TDP
Even if AMD processors sucked ass compared to Intel, the market needs 2 rivals or it's gonna get really expensive
if intel does become a monopoly then they'll probably have them split, much like they did with ATT.
there goes competitive pricing
What purpose have they for leaving? Can't they focus on both, and as long as they are making profits from their PC CPU hold, why the fuck leave?
Prepare for your wallet to be absolutely raped.
No matter how I think about this, it still seems like AMD is trying to compete with Intel in some ways as Intel also announced that they will be developing mobile hardwares and CPUs targeting phones and tablets a few month ago.
i5-2500k has a 95W TDP, the 8 core bulldozer has a 125W TDP
That I did know, I had no idea it performed that poorly even in things utilizing all of the threads, though.
Why can't you just wrap it around your head computers are getting smaller? For fucks sake if you told someone a decade ago you could put a quad core CPU in a phone they'd have a heart attack. If you told people 50 years ago you could fit a computer under your desk they'd call you insane.
Smaller for the same amount of power. Just because scientists can cram more power into a smaller area, there will always be the "performance entheusiasts" who want the very best that won't fit into a small area.
The pc as we know it now, will be the same in 50 years from now. The laptop will be the same, the tablet will be the same and the smartphone will be the same. Sure there will definitely be cross developement, mainly with the tablets and smartphones, but the fact of the matter is that each of these technologies have their own purpose. Maybe in 50 years the tablet will be the new house hold computer. The enthusiast computer, and the powerhouse computer will always be the desktop. The main reason? clock frequency creats heat. Heat needs to be dispelled somehow, and technology to dispel heat takes space. It's as simple as that.
Found this in one of the comments: I hope that this was just blown out of proportion, as I just bought an amazing AMD CPU for just $100 and hate see the fact that my motherboard would no longer have available upgrades.
Thought they were going to leave the desktop market. That'd be a disaster.

EU wont let this slide... If there will still be an EU.
shit, that changes my mind on upgrading my athlon to a phenom this christmas
Why? It's not like AMD is going to come to your house and take away your CPU. [editline]29th November 2011[/editline]
Intel processors are expensive enough already, now they have a monopoly on consumer processors?
I would argue that the performance value with the Sandy Bridge (non SB-E) is some of the highest ever. A 2500k for like 230 bucks that can destroy most other competition for such a low price. [editline]29th November 2011[/editline]
AMD has the best preforming cards,
No.
and are by far better at power management/heat management.
Yes. [editline]29th November 2011[/editline]
The box is slowly disappearing, The Operating systems are slowly getting to that "Appliance" feel (See Windows 8's Touch friendly idiot proof interface, Ubuntu's Unity(?), Apples App store to their OS), the hardware is getting more and more closely integrated (See, Core i5 with built in GPU). And like I stated earlier, the cloud is slowly becoming a major part of computing in general you may not even realise you utilise it in some way. OnLive for example is just the tip of the potentially colossal iceberg. To say that the desktop PC will stay like it is now for the next 50 years would be silly, just look at the past 50 years. The average consumer expects their PC to be an "Appliance" The fact that so many take so little care in keeping them free of Crapware is an indicator of this, they want their machine to "Just Work" and be trouble free like their TV or mobile phone. This is how it is changing. I'm talking about the mass market here, Not enthusiasts, Like I have said already there are places where these "Performance computers" are required, such as in professional audio/video.
Coincidentally after the Unity bullshit, Ubuntu is dying.
No, damnit! I just bought a six-core Phenom II I loved how AMD was quite cost-effective and it still kept up with Intel
I wouldn't mind if ATi did this... but now there goes the chance to get cost effective CPU's.
Coincidentally after the Unity bullshit, Ubuntu is dying.
Too true, I was one of those that jumped ship. Their desire to please the mass market conflicts with their actual user base. (Like me)
Not sure if good news or sad news.
How would a monopoly ever be good?
Maybe Nvidia will rise as Intel's main competitor?
Are they seriously giving up because of one mediocre product line? Way to go AMD...
Aren't like some CPUs from both AMD and Intel just like each other? Cause I have a Intel(R) Pentium(R)D CPU 3.40GHz. It works fine and haven't had a problem with it for a couple of years.
Found this in one of the comments:
What do they mean no driver? It's easy:
Are they seriously giving up because of one mediocre product line? Way to go AMD...
two, actually the six core phenoms weren't that great either, since they were priced similarly to the i5 of the time and generally performed below it
Good bye AMD, they were cool...
