It just makes a mockery of the whole 'Safety through Guns' argument.
And you think it would be safe without guns?
Son, the problem is people, not the weapons. They'll find a way to raise hell with sticks if they have to.
I suggest we ban cars while we're at it. They easily kill more people than guns every year.
People are the problem -> remove people from the equation.
Program cars to drive on their own.
Program guns to shoot on their own.
From what I hear from UK FPers there's enough chavs on the street to warrant the need for a law like this
Hardly, most people are using hyperboles or just exaggerating sure you get your areas where undesirable people gather but it's not like if you're in the UK you lock your doors and windows at night and put your car in a bulletproof garage.
Isn't it uncomfortable and heavy to have gun flailing around in your pocket while jogging?
I was going by http://www.economist.com/node/17902699.
The economist is an incredibly reliable source.
And I never said 30,000 'murders'.

More Americans were killed by guns in the 18 years between 1979 and 1997
At a rate of 30,000 a year.

Kid deserved it. I was in the situation, I'd have done the same.
wow
There's self defence and there's excessive force.
If he'd fired one shot and killed a kid it wouldn't be so bad, this guy fired 8 times, that's excessive if you ask me.
That seems to be more of an issue of the ridiculous amount of power a gun gives a person, but that's a different issue entirely.
Good, the guy defended himself to the best of his ability and a hooligan is out forever.
Ban all guns all gun owners are racist nerds and rednecks

Wow he killed an unarmed guy he should be given the death penalty
Where have you been for the last year or two, I haven't seen you in forever.
Location: under your floorboards
Oh.
Why would someone attempt to knock out a random person on the street for no reason?
From what I hear from UK FPers there's enough chavs on the street to warrant the need for a law like this
over here even if you punched the kid in the face you'd be put in prison for assault while the mugger has a fine for public disturbance or something.
also a thug was killed in self defence, if this kid was willing to mug a random dude for no reason whatsoever it's kind of obvious he won't be a contributing member to society.
Cool fact. More civilians have murdered each other in America with guns, than the entire casualty rate of all the wars America has been involved in since it's inception.
Cooler EDIT: More Americans were killed by guns in the 18 years between 1979 and 1997 than died in all of America’s foreign wars since its independence.
well yeah more people got killed by violent crimes in 300 years than in 15 years worth of actual battle
He shot 8 times, he had the intent to kill not defend himself...
Uh, you know that's how it works, right? If you use a lethal weapon (such as a gun) you are saying that the situation has escalated to the point where it is necessary, and if you use a lethal weapon to wound someone non-lethally you can face consecutive life sentences.
It's stupid, but it's the law.
He probably just panicked and pulled the trigger over and over.
Yeah, after reading some replies I understand it. The thing is, who is stupid enough to mug someone in the US, when a lot of households have firearms.
So let kid punch me once and possibly continue doing so until I am unconscious and possibly rob me or kill me OR shoot kid a bunch of times in hopes to stop attack?
Answer is obvious

Most people with Concealed Carry Permits usually have some sort of holster, be it on the hip, chest or leg. Although I cannot say for sure, he probably had one of these holsters, or at least something similar. Oh wow it does say he pulled it from his pocket. That would be awkward to run with.

Also I can understand this guys situation, to an extent. I often jog; although I try to avoid night jogs, and I always carry a spray can of mace on me. Just the other day I was out and it was getting late, on my way back a lady lost control of her dog, it was a big dog, maybe 80 pounds or so. I saw him coming at me, and grabbed my mace in case he bit me. Thankfully he just jumped on me, and I was able to return it to the owner. Better safe then sorry.
What's the point of mugging a jogger anyway? People who run usually don't go with their wallets (or at least I don't.)
Mp3 players I suppose.
the guy is probably scarred for life knowing he killed someone
even if it was because he feared his life
over here even if you punched the kid in the face you'd be put in prison for assault while the mugger has a fine for public disturbance or something.
that's dumb as fuck.
Yay I love my state again.

Yeah, not to mention that it's dangerous and I think illegal to carry a concealed weapon without a holster.
The leg holster thing would have been better.
There are non-lethal ways to defend oneself these days and I wish they'd be preferred over guns especially if you can't stop yourself from firing uncontrollably in panic when you're attacked. Pepper spray would've saved this guy from the muggers just as well.
He'd be fucked if the guy had a gun.
Did the teenager deserve to die: No.
Should the man have tried to kill him: No.
Can we blame him for what he did: Absolutely not.
The outcome may not have been ideal, but I know I would have done the same thing in that situation, when you're under pressure like that.
If someones going to attack someone/rob a store or person, then they deserve what ever happens to them.
in most cases its death, well tough shit, they shouldn't of fucked with the wrong person.
that's dumb as fuck.
And generally doesn't happen like that. People get done for assualt when they chase after their attacker who has fled from them defending themselves, and then beat the guy into a brain dead pulp. Not once when I've been out at night have I wanted a weapon to defend myself with in the UK.
Everything went as well as it should have.
This was Florida.
I'm a dumbass then. Guess I should have looked into it more than just noticing it was the DM.
I would've fired once to scare them shitless. No need to empty the whole pistol on someone.
You don't fire a gun unless you plan to stop an assailant. That's negligent use of firearm because of the possibility of collateral damage.

This idea is acceptable.
