• MPs bid to rename Big Ben tower after Queen

Even though Queen Liz's reigned for 60 years, we should just keep calling the clock tower Big Ben. In my mind, the Elizabeth Tower would look like some sort of ornate white monolith in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, very different from the iconic clock-faced belltower that we know as Big Ben, rising above Parliament on the banks of the River Thames.
I really hate agreeing with you but everyone needs to chill out with this "fuck the monarchy" attitude.
I'm allowed because I'm Irish. It's in my blood to hate the British/Monarchy. But really, I don't see the point of renaming it. To most people the entire thing is Big Ben, hell, I didn't even know Big Ben was just the bell up until now.
She's hardly Paris Hilton, she's done a hell of a lot for people, helping various charities and I'm fairly sure she has a charity of her own. Plus she also does diplomatic work as well with her being head of state. [editline]2nd June 2012[/editline] We actually get £500 million per year according to a report by the treasury I saw a while ago.

She actually does more than that. She makes the UK money because whilst the taxpayer does give her money she lets the government collect the money from her estates, and AFAIK that is about 200 million. Also, she gets us quite a few business deals amd attracts a lot of tourism
Her claim to fame is pretty much the same as Hilton's, is what I'm saying. I mean, there are other rich philanthropists, and other shit that rakes in tourism dollars but they aren't as famous as the queen. She's famous because she is queen, just like Hilton is famous because she is Hilton.
Its not like it'd change what people actually call it, so go ahead
Her claim to fame is pretty much the same as Hilton's, is what I'm saying.
She's still done more than hilton
I've done more than Hilton, yet I'm not famous.
do brits seriously call popsicles "cold on the cob"?
I've done more than Hilton, yet I'm not famous.
But have you done more than the queen? [editline]2nd June 2012[/editline]
do brits seriously call popsicles "cold on the cob"?
Some probably do, depends on the area, I've never heard a scouser round here say it.
do brits seriously call popsicles "cold on the cob"?
Yes, we also call guns "rooty tooty point and shooty"
But have you done more than the queen?
This conversation is out of hand!
do brits seriously call popsicles "cold on the cob"?
i have never heard this not once ever [editline]2nd June 2012[/editline] no
do brits seriously call popsicles "cold on the cob"?
They are called Ice Lollies where I live. We do have corn on the cob though.
I've done more than Hilton, yet I'm not famous.
But are you the reigning monarch of the Commonwealth realms?
But are you the reigning monarch of the Commonwealth realms?
Hilton's not.
But... I don't want to be called Elizabeth tower. WHY DOESN'T ANYONE CARE HOW I FEEL?!
Don't worry, you're still the main attraction..."the heart of the tower" some would say
But... I don't want to be called Elizabeth tower. WHY DOESN'T ANYONE CARE HOW I FEEL?!
I always wonder if people name themselves things like this just hoping one day that they will be able to make a joke like this. As to the article: this isn't as bad as it at first sounds. As has already been said - Big Ben is the name of the bell, changing the name of the tower isn't anything bad as most people don't know the tower's name to begin with.
no, this started as a joke completely unrelated to the actual Big Ben :v:
I've done more than Hilton, yet I'm not famous.

She has also helped with some humanitarian organizations. In June 2008, she donated money to the construction of a medical building at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. She stated that "The children I have met through my involvement with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles have truly touched my heart. I am proud to make a donation and lend my name to the fundraising effort to help children who are facing terribly serious illnesses. The fabulous new hospital facilities at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles will provide a caring, healing environment for children and their families for many years to come."[140] In 2010, Hilton was named as ambassador for a new initiative from the USO that aims to give a MP3 player to all US active service troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.[141] She received the Heart of Gold Award by the Starlight Children's Foundation for her philanthropy efforts on March 26, 2011. After the ceremony, she wrote through Twitter that "These families and their children go through so much and my heart and prayers are with them. It's such an amazing feeling to give back and make a difference in someone's life. I am so honoured to be a part of such an amazing cause."[142] She participated, alongside Fergie and husband Josh Duhamel, in the run that raised money for the people affected by the Japan Earthquake.[143] Recently, she got involved with My Hope for Children.[144]
I seriously doubt you have. I don't like Paris Hilton much but generally most rich people donate quite a lot to charity simply because they have a lot more money lying around.
I was thinking of a name more along the lines of "Big Lizzie". But really, MPs being stupid? Nothing different to the usual.
Its just renaming the actual tower which most people don't even know about into something else. I see no harm in doing this, its not like they are going to name it "Ticky Tocky Dingy Dong".
OI IT'S SEVEN BONG!
I seriously doubt you have. I don't like Paris Hilton much but generally most rich people donate quite a lot to charity simply because they have a lot more money lying around.
Oh, so she's more like the queen than I initially thought.
Oh, so she's more like the queen than I initially thought.
But does Hilton do diplomatic work? And I certainly don't remember the last time Hilton got a massive boat parade.
But does Hilton do diplomatic work? And I certainly don't remember the last time Hilton got a massive boat parade.
The only reason the queen does that is because she is allowed to. Hilton doesn't really have the ability to do diplomatic work. You really like the queen, don't you dude?
maybe ask the Queen herself whether she wants the Big Ben tower named after her
do brits seriously call popsicles "cold on the cob"?
No, we call them the sensible name of ice lollies.
No, we call them the sensible name of ice lollies.
The word "lolly" makes me giggle.
I think it's fun having a Queen, the country would be ever so much more boring without her.
And we would have to write a new national anthem
