"only a virtuous people are capable of freedom"? He's extolling virtues here you know.
Franklin also hated Christianity and did not consider faith to be a virtue.
Shit, most of the founding fathers said some nasty things about Christianity. "World's greatest engine of grief" and whatnot.
If you quote Ben Franklin in support of Christian morals, you're going to have a bad time.

next time I'm going to the movies I'll be sure to bring my eagle tear lubricated all-american glock 17
thanks texan dude!
Why am i not hearing loads of shit about violence in movies causing this sort of stuff but if this was a video game conference or release day it would be a game that caused it without any argument from the press. what is it about video games that cause press to criminalize it, how come it doesn't happen to the movie industry? or does it and im just living under a rock?
Sarcasm. Added sarc mark for emphasis :)
I think this comes to be a bit of a shitty argument, because it is one thing to watch someone chop people up in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, and another to be presented a chainsaw and instructed "Press X to mutilate".

Also wtf the article didn't even mention video games.

the point of video games comes from general blame, i know it wasn't in the article but when it comes to everything but gaming the blame goes something really stupid like blaming it on gay people
"We've threatened high school graduation participations, if they use God's name, they're going to be jailed ... I mean that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don't want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present."
Oh fuck, we didn't include god in our Public High School graduation ceremony, now he's gonna let a massacre happen.
Way to fucking politicize a tragedy you bitch.
I was really worried when I clicked on this thread if he was a representative from Texas. And he is. I am sad now.
He doesn't seem as bad as I think you're all imagining.
He is not saying that the perp did so in the name of attacking Christianity. He is not saying that religious things caused this at alll directly.
He is saying that a general decline in morals has caused this. Which makes more sense but he was quite retarded about it.
There's an overall point about the "decay of morals", which I genuinly see as bullshit anyways since this has been said for years now anytime something bad has happened. But to clarify on what the representative said regarding religion:

We have been at war with the very pillars, the very foundation of this country … and when … you know … what really gets me as a Christian, is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs and then a senseless, crazy act of terror like this takes place.
You know, when people say, where was God in all of this? Well, you know, we don’t let … in fact we’ve threatened high school graduation participants that if they use God’s name that they’re going to be jailed, we had a principal of a school, and a superintendent or a coach down in Florida that were threatened with jail because they said the blessing at a voluntary off-campus dinner. I mean, that kind of stuff … where is God? Where, where? What have we done with God? We told him that we don’t want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present.
It's a different take on the whole "God is punishing us" bit, but here he's bemoaning a perceived attack from our society on religion. And then he drops this shit about those who are not religious (from the same article):
Gohmert pointed to a study that he said indicated that the rate of suicide in the military was associated with atheism — drawing a connection that he said implied that a lack of faith was associated with mental health disorders.
“What they found, and I don’t know if they will make it public – one of the participants told me ‘ the results may not go public’; but, all of the people who committed suicide, within their thousands of people studied, were part of the 2 percent most atheistic members of the military. We’ve lost our faith.”
If you want to read his full exchange with the conservative talk radio show, read here.
