Those genes aren't just theirs, I have some of those genes... I demand royalties!
*sigh*
Unfortunately this is what happens when capitalism meets science. This is why we need more government funding being put towards science: it stops companies being forced to patent everything they can get their hands on just so that they know they've got some source of income.
I just pantented the other 80% you are now all my slaves, do my bidding.
If I patent something can I selectively allow some people to be allowed to use it or not use it? So could I say, "oh, I think company A and B should be allowed to use this, but I don't want company C to be allowed to use this," or would that start infringing on antitrust laws and monopolising an industry?
It really reminds me of oil companies patenting anything that could compete with them and make sure it never sees the light of day again. Like that huge electric car discontinuation in 19... 80? Something like that I'm not sure.
They should make all patents free, put research/technology/etc under state control and pour loads of funding into it.
Greedy bastards keeping those things to themselves.
Whoever at the patent office that allowed patenting this should be shot, multiple times, then throw out of a tall building
Sucks big time that this trend isn't likely to end anytime soon, particularly as far as renewable energy solutions and medications are concerned. You'll see something in the news once in a great while about a scientific breakthrough that's been made, and that's the last you'll ever hear about it again.
show 1 example
Did anyone hear about that Spanish woman who wanted to patent the sun and charge everyone for its use, because it wasn't patented before?
We are digging our technological grave ever deeper as we continue to turn to unsustainable consumerism.
This is why most major scientific breakthroughs are happening outside of the US and their patent-lawsuit claws
I hate capitalism.
Shit I'm gonna be sued I have a brown hair gene. Halp.
Don't worry guys, I patented the patenting process along with owning a patent and I will sue them for infringement and set these genes free!
It's all about business..
Don't you think that genes are pretty much the definition of "public domain"? I also don't understand the legality behind this. How does one patent that which was fashioned by a natural process (evolution)?
I mean if the genes were man-made, this would make perfect sense. But to patent the fruits of a natural process? That just seems asinine to me. I'm going to go patent the process in which dead organic matter is decomposed in to oil. I know have infinite money.
So now apparently they own part of my genetic makeup?
If I don't pay my taxes, what if they decide to take away 20% of my genes? :saddowns:
i should patent human life so people have to pay me to have kids
People lol, ignoring the point entirely.
Yes the capitalists invented the patent system and intellectual property and enforce the laws relating to those decrees. Capitalism at work :downs:

Some day.
They should have something on the patent office that is "Do this patent even sound fucking reasonable?"
I choose to patent oxygen, I expect a quarter for every time you all breathe now.
I choose to patent oxygen, I expect a quarter for every time you all breathe now.
Well FINE, I'll just stop breathing.
Hah, I'm so smart.
My father works in the medical industry and he has some sick things he learned. When you go to the store you think you see wide varieties from different companies. But when you go up the ladder, a handful of companies are protecting their turf and releasing new branches to provide the economy, competition, sort of to speak.
I've been telling my mom for ages that all medicine has to abide by the same FDA regulations, so there's absolutely no reason to buy the high priced brand name medicines when you can save a shitload and get the exact same thing with different packaging.
This is just one of the many problems that capitalism causes, the Government should own ideas, and human DNA should not be controlled, even by the government.

Ideas shouldn't be owned if they benefit all humans in general.

You do realize this has nothing to do with capitalism and in fact the government is distributing ownership of ideas to companies who claim them on a first come, first serve basis?
I like how even when the government is undeniably directly responsible it's still capitalism's fault

It's the capitalist manipulation of the government to be allowed free reign when it comes to ideas and shit.
This amounts to a failure of the system of Intelectual Property rights, initially, they were there to protect the hard working inventors so they could produce a product. That has been twisted in so many ways with the patenting of genes by biotech companies
I don't know about the USA but the patents laws here prohibit patenting genes because they're not invented by humans. Neither are new species. You can only patent genes as parts of manufacturing process.
