No it wasn't, it didn't innovate or revolutionize anything, it was just really big because it was made by a huge team with basically infinite money.
Witcher 3 was made by a team of about 200. Saints Row IV, for instance, had a team of about 200 to make, it, but comparatively GTAV had a team of around 1000 people. And Overwatch has a dev team of about 100 for an multiplayer shooter. And they did not have infinite money at the time. They were succesful off the back of Witcher 2 and with the help of GoG, but they hardly had infinite money.

Further, if we go off of this argument:
It didn't innovate, but it had enough of an impact revolutionize the genre.
Then goddamn does Witcher 3 deserve credit. That game is now to many the gold standard of open-world RPGs.
Typically award shows are about giving awards to recent things.
Ah, sorry, I got these mixed up with the Steam Awards, seeing as they are supposed to becoming December, my bad!
Hard to take seriously because of the overly commercial theme, it's like a playlist of commercials with some awards in between. And when the winners sit on the jurys themselves, well, not very interesting nor surprising results.
They're all good or great but not breath-taking in my opinion. Nothing revolutionary here.

I fucking loved Uncharted 4 and even had to defend it against angry FPers who were trying to pretend it's not that great, but I think that it's not revolutionary either for the whole of the game industry.
It's definitely an inspiration for adventure games, but it didn't do much outside of that (influence-wise, I mean).
Regardless, this was still a great year for gaming. Doesn't mean it was great as say, 2004. But it was still great.

That's what awards ceremonies are. Awards, music, industry adverts, and appeasing the sponsors.

Not the ones i've watched. Guess that's because they are financed by the government, art organisations or simply out of goodwill. This one was neither interesting nor credible. I can't say they gave me a reason to watch it next year.
how do you think they should support the show financially
When the creator of the show talks at length and breadth about getting video games recognized as legit art as well as the top commercial endeavor involving entertainment in the world, I'm waging "put ralph in a giant razor with headlights and have him creep out guests" shouldn't be terribly high on the list. Given the amount of people that left the back rows during the show, I'd hazard not many other people think so either.

I mean I don't think TW3 is very revolutionary, does that mean 2015 was a shitty year for games

I miss the times when games like HL2 turned the tables with shiny graphics and physics and everything we take for granted nowadays.

nice save
No, the save was Boogie, Dragon Dad and Hideo Kojima.
The rest of that "show" aside from Mick was somehow actually worse than the Spike!'s three hour advertorials.
Clusterfuck of very ill thought out content, again from a guy who touts "elevating games".
Can't til next year when they dress Keighley in different suit for every sponsor like a fucking nascar clown.

Some are (I could also say the Nobel prize but that feels a bit like cheating.) The world isn't just America with its overly sponsored events.

But The Game Awards takes place in America.

Still stops those that i've watched from being overly sponsored. I never specifically talked about America. We need some European-style game awards, financed by cultural organisations.

I agree, but until then sponsors are the best realistic way to fund such a grand (and televised) event.

We've hit a point where the latest new graphical feature wouldn't be missed if they didn't add it to a game. I even turn off a lot of extra shit just so I can see things clearer.
The focus nowadays should be on gameplay and storytelling, because if all you've got is graphics then you're just gonna have a generic boring shooter that nobody cares about.

a bit disappointed that the zelda demo showed off was more boring forest area stuff. i wanna see the volcano area or the floating fortress.
