Gabe Newell: Single-player games are like a feature film where your lead actor is retarded and autis

it's not a big deal he even used those words to describe it
Well gabe just lost all the remaining hope I had for him. He's no different than the other ceo's.
I hope in the future he isn't going EA with all that money.
Huh, well I hope he's not indicating he now dislikes single player games because I really don't want co-op or anything like it to be the main style of play in the next Half-Life installment
They can do it to ANY game except that
half live 3 confirmed
I believe he means the player of said game. Not the main character, and I believe him.
Nooooo he means the fucking characters. Why would he insult literally every valve and video game fan by calling them autistic retards?
Can someone explain what he's "taking too far", the fact that he's using the word "retarded" and "autistic" to describe a character in a game?
for some reason they think he's calling the player retarded, even when it's blatantly obvious he's talking about the character.
Can someone explain what he's "taking too far", the fact that he's using the word "retarded" and "autistic" to describe a character in a game?
He's not even doing that, he's describing how the player interacts with the other characters and the environment.

I think its the choices of words he used but then again you really can't say anything else than that, I assure you if another CEO said it the thread would be filled to the brim with HOLY SHIT THEY'RE SO EVIL
When I heard him say that, I was like "Gabe! You can't say that! Elaborate! You can salvage this!"
Unless I just didn't catch it, but he never elaborated on what he meant by that.
Holy shit Gabe
That's abit far
How is that a bit far? Video game characters are expressionless, motionless, blank-staring meat things that talk every now and then in premade lines.

Wait people believe he's calling the player retarded and autistic? Well you have to be one of those two if you understood it like that, sorry.
How is that a bit far? Video game characters are expressionless, motionless, blank-staring meat things that talk every now and then in premade lines.
and autistic people are not
that's the point
That was the most awkward and cryptic, (if not possibly immature) way of describing a game. :v:
How is that a bit far? Video game characters are expressionless, motionless, blank-staring meat things that talk every now and then in premade lines.
now think about how you just connected being retarded/autistic to those terms
come on you're so close to the realization
It wasn't cryptic at all. Poor wording maybe but his meaning is pretty clear.
and autistic people are not

Impaired social interaction and communication is like, the main characteristic of the autism spectrum, which then goes from light to extremely severe.
Being an autist I agree and laughed hard.
Speaking for most single player games this is actually spot on. Rarely do I find a game where the lead character has some sort of understanding about what is actually happening. That said it isn't bad that characters are designed a little clueless so it can engage the player to learn about the world around him. Most the characters lose all skills gained in forced tutorial levels or terrible writing(see ME2/ME3, or any Final Fantasy game).
Like in hl2 when you're in an elevator with alyx whose introducing herself, Gordon fucking freeman just stands there and decides to not even talk to her
Come on Gordon get it together
More like just decides to crouch right next to her and stare at her ass.
That's how Gordon Freeman meets people.
expressionless, motionless, blank-staring meat things
Oh my god it was a fucking joke by exaggeration, the audience laughed and so did I. I can literally see Gabe facepalm upon reading ANY interpretation of this.
quote
Yes, that would be the extremely severe autism. With retardation to top it off, mind you. If you take the severest autism and combine it with profound mental retardation, you got an average game protagonist.
Don't bother trying to pass it off as me saying everyone with any grade of autism is an expressionless drooling retard that is not worth more than a hunk of lifeless meat.

ok then
ok then
internet crusader right here
i'm sorry i don't see people with a neural disorder as a hilarious sack of meat
Not upset with the word choice, but I just don't want this to mean they tack on multiplayer in all future games.
and i don't think most other people think using the word in a joke is so offensive and needlessly confrontational
we put the riot shield in, and our player number go up. We take the riot shield out, and our player numbers go ... up. How do you explain that?
It was God.
(disclaimer: in no way am I doing a religion joke or starting a religion debate/rant, just making a quick reference to that guy who became a meme when he said there was no explanation for tsunamis, clouds and rainbows)
Not upset with the word choice, but I just don't want this to mean they tack on multiplayer in all future games.
That is, not at all, what gabe is talking about. How did you even figure it meant that?
ok then
Yes, extremely severe autism still falls under autism. I didn't specify severeness, I left it out as it seemed pretty obvious, but I guess there is always that one guy who's going to try and twist it around.
If I say that this character handles like a cripple who can barely move, it's quite obvious I mean someone severely crippled and don't think everyone with a stubbed toe is stuck on a wheelchair.
Also I like how you quoted that last part trying to pass it off as if I said autistic people are all like that, and pulling it out of context. A few years ago I'd have said you're trolling, but I've seen some shit.
Given how the average player
-bunny hops everywhere
-breaks everything
-breaks into people's houses and steals their stuff
-tries to kill everyone, including the people helping them
-stares at every woman's chest and ass for who knows how long
-stacks random shit in random places
-drives worse than a blind horse on drugs
-wastes bullets drawing dicks on walls
-kills themselves often
-collects every single thing until it becomes impossible for them to move
-cannot move their eyes independently of their head or even their arms
-teabags dead bodies
I'd say, yeah, player characters are pretty retarded.

i don't think you'll ever be able to justify likening autistic people to meat
