• Gabe Newell: Single-player games are like a feature film where your lead actor is retarded and autis

But but..... What about the interpretation of Gordon having no vocal chords explaining his muteness?
That is, not at all, what gabe is talking about. How did you even figure it meant that?
That's what scared me when I read the title. And I'm wondering if that's why some people are complaining. Until I read the article I thought he was just bashing games for being singleplayer.
i don't think you'll ever be able to justify likening autistic people to meat
But they're people therefore made of meat. You're taking this way too seriously
What did he say wrong? You guys get all up-in-arms when someone gets in trouble for using the term retarded in a slanderous way and now you're upset that Gabe used it in a joking way to define the standard gamer? I think he was pretty spot on. You have to build a game so that the most unintelligent/drunk player can navigate the game successfully. It's not like he went out and said "Everyone who plays Half-Life is retarded", you're just taking it out of context.
i don't think you'll ever be able to justify likening autistic people to meat
So he didn't use the exact right choice of word, big whoop. Doesn't make his point any less valid.
i don't think you'll ever be able to justify likening autistic people to meat
I likened the mannerism of someone who is extremely autistic and retarded to it. Mental disabilities can go pretty far, there probably isn't more than a handful people in the word with a case as severe as that, but this is purely theoretical, because it was the example of how a video game character is. Also you should note the distinction between likening a person to it, and likening their mannerisms and social interactions.
So he didn't use the exact right choice of word, big whoop. Doesn't make his point any less valid.
noone said it invalidated his point, but he could have made it a better way [editline]4th February 2013[/editline]
Granted Gabe could have worded his thoughts better (because the way he said it in the interview was a bit... vague), but damn people. Let's just say hypothetically that he was referring to actual players. The ones who jumped up and automatically assumed that are kind of proving his point. :v:
uh noone thinks he's saying the players are retarded i do not know why you or anyone else thinks this

Because Gabe said this, alot of you are defending him to the ends of the earth but if ANY other developer said this then you would be jumping down their throats.
Because Gabe said this, alot of you are defending him to the ends of the earth but if ANY other developer said this then you would be jumping down their throats.
No
I don't think he's implying that the player is retarded and autistic, but that the character your playing as is, with the way he interacts with the environments.
This is how I read it too. The thought of him calling the actual players retarded didn't cross my mind until I read the other comments. Imagine meeting the character you play in real life, who shoots rockets at his own feet or sprints around crowbarring everything and moving around spastically shooting pigeons. You'd think he's retarded too.
No
Yes, I've seen people do it on here before.
bullshit If he were to say Gordon Freeman jumps like he's crippled you wouldn't have uttered a god damn word.
well in my own hypothetical world, i have wings and laser eyes and i win the argument every time let's keep this to reality ok
If you were Male_07 and saw Gordon Freeman running around bunny hopping, whacking everything with a crowbar and throwing shit at civil protection you'd think he'd be pretty retarded.
it's still in incredibly bad taste, whether or not 'autistic and retarded' people are actually sacks of meat. they could be a literal sack of meat for all i care, it doesn't justify gabe using a neural disorder as a piss poor way of describing video games.
What I'm saying is, using a figure of speech to say someone has the expressiveness of a plank (example) doesn't mean they are worth as much as a plank and shit people. As for Gabe, I think he just meant that they are autistic in the sense that they have (or well, would have if they were real) serious impairments to social interaction, he didn't ever say all autistic people are retarded or anything like that.
well in my own hypothetical world, i have wings and laser eyes and i win the argument every time let's keep this to reality ok
I am. It's fucking hypocritical that's what it is. Who gives a shit what choice of words someone took. If he were to say "mentally challenged", would that be better? If so, why?

It's a pretty casual environment he's talking in so I can easily forgive it (I say some pretty awful stuff on accident as well) but it was a misstep and he should probably make a small apology on twitter or something.
I don't see the big deal.

Maybe this is how Gordon would look like :v:
Basically, multi-player games are very systematic and almost robotic. You have a distinct and simple objective and you complete it with real people. Single player games throw you into a more immersive and story-like scenario with NPC's used to convey the plot and act as...well, actors. Now, when you play single player and multi-player you're essentially going to be playing in the same way. However, taking a scenario in a single player game and applying it to a real life situation while also bringing you (your character) into reality also you can easily see that your character will most definitely seem mentally deficient. Why? Because it's not reality, it's a game, and players will control their character as they would in a game. Fuck, what kind of crazy asshat jumps around constantly covering every inch of an area looking for something while mindlessly killing anyone in their path. A good example of this is Fallout, actually. Basically, altough somewhat poorly conveyed his thoughts are entirely valid. You go Gaben.
Yes, I've seen people do it on here before.
No I mean no as in dont try and be "smart" and tell people why they're arguing or what they're arguing for It's annoying and stupid and you're really just assuming shit to say that.
Sounds like he got us right.
No I mean no as in dont try and be "smart" and tell people why they're arguing or what they're arguing for It's annoying and stupid and you're really just assuming shit to say that.
Bit of a hypocrite telling me what I can and can't do. Because people like you worship Gabe like a god, you assume no other developer is as good as him. Stop whining like a bitch because someone opposes what you believe.
Are people actually flipping their shit about this? In the context it should be extremely clear that he's talking about player behaviour inside the game, which is as good of a description as it gets.
To be fair, so is the AI
Not upset with the word choice, but I just don't want this to mean they tack on multiplayer in all future games.
You're in for a treat then! All future Valve games past the current singleplayer ones are to be based on mutiplayer as the core. They've said so themselves but I lost the source.
