facepunch can
Gabe just played HL2 again, noticed the AI, and started projecting
So it's like when I'm playing Black Mesa and I get to Residue Processing, and instead of trying to escape, I spend the next hour throwing barrels and shit onto the conveyor belts :v:
in Counter-Strike, we put the riot shield in, and our player number go up. We take the riot shield out, and our player numbers go ... up. How do you explain that?
because the players are retarded and autistic?
[editline]4th February 2013[/editline]
but seriously maybe it's because counter strike is the only fps that offers its type of gameplay
Gordon Freeman is retarded and autistic?
In Half Life 1 I could believe he was a bit touched, but I think whatever happened to him during stasis and teleportation reduced him from a human fighting for his survival to an armed, unquestioning missile aimed at the citadel.

Or when you get to Kleiner's lab and without asking for permission use the teleporter until it breaks.
And then throw books into high places while people are talking, either relinquishing or not when Kleiner finally breaks the awkward silence and protests gently.
Yeah I guess it's because you can't sell people hats on single player games
GODDAMNIT GABE
I am NOT autistic
I am autastic.
Ignoring the choice of words, I think he's saying that multiplayer games aren't player-centric and are harder because your playing against humans, which is obvious.
But then for some reason he brings up the riot shield example which doesnt make any sense. Maybe the player numbers were going up despite the riot shield?
Valve SP games are playtested by literally every demographic, which is why they're not challenging at all.

Good thing we're all on Facepunch then, Autism is our collective condition
Valve SP games are playtested by literally every demographic, which is why they're not challenging at all.
I wouldn't say there's no challenge at all, but they eliminate frustrating parts pretty well, which makes it feel easier.

I feel as if Half Life II was devoid of the urgent and pressing need to find the correct path to survival. When you finally come across a street full of combine and covered from every angle by soldiers, DOG runs in and kills 60% of them so you can waltz through. He then opens the gate to lead you to a path he seems to know to let you go to the next outdoor area conflict.
I feel as if Valve's biggest mistake was allowing themselves to become discouraged by the leak and scrapping all of the creative creature ideas they had in the Beta. It would have hurt to delay the game, but I could have understood several more years of development after that for them to rebuild their transition from Black Mesa to Eastern Europe. Half Life II was timid in my opinion, and afraid of criticism and it's been reflected in their absence of confidence in major single player investments.
imagine a halflife movie where everytime something is killed gordon smashes it with a crowbar until it explodes
it's like when you're 5 and you hear your grandpa say something mean for the first time
anyone who's mad is just angry that gabe compared them to video game characters.
Great so now even Valve is gonna start pumping out stupid multiplayer focused games. Fuck

You only read the title, didn't you.
I agree, but I think it's a poor grouping of words. 'retarded' is nowadays an insult, and putting 'autistic' with it is making a negative connection. When watching the talk I was surprised that Gabe said this.
I might get dumbed down for this, but I just have to ask everyone in this thread, and keep in mind this is an honest question: Would you have responded the same way if Kotick or any other studio CEO had made the exact same comment?

Actually, he distinctly separates the two categories. Within what he said there is clearly room for autistic people who are not retarded and retarded people who are not autistic. It was a little strongly worded, but I wouldn't disagree with what he said or go so far as to say he was speaking ill of autistic people.
The Autism Awareness community, people who are easily offended, and people who think or pretend to have autism are going to fucking explode.
Meanwhile, the high-functioning Asperger's community will continue not giving a fuck.

Haha, of course they wouldn't have.
This forum is such a massive circlejerk over Gabe.
If this was Kotick, they'd be planning assassination attempts.

TBH yes, probably. I don't really care.
If you were Male_07 and saw Gordon Freeman running around bunny hopping, whacking everything with a crowbar and throwing shit at civil protection you'd think he'd be pretty retarded.
So? That's not how you're supposed to play the game and most people don't play it that way either.

funfact the delay and scrapping of hl2 was not because of the leak
Bit of a hypocrite telling me what I can and can't do. Because people like you worship Gabe like a god, you assume no other developer is as good as him. Stop whining like a bitch because someone opposes what you believe.
no i just think it's stupid you're telling me, or anyone else, why they're doing that
you're wrong by the way
so, i dunno what you're trying to prove
well never mind you got permad
While I can agree with the idea that players of SP games often make the main character do things which would otherwise be regarded as just plain stupid (repeatedly throwing random objects at Metro Cops, stacking shit to get out of areas, jumping on top of NPCs, etc.), I can't help but feel that Gabe's wording leaves a bit to be desired. I mean, it's really no big deal to me that he said it like that, but you know for a fact that there are people out there that are going to take his words at face value, and cause a huge shitstorm.
This is perfectly believable, the main character of a single player game is usually a mute autistic retard that barges into people's homes, breaks all their shit, loot their cupboards, and then just leave.
Look, everyone defending this, regardless of his point it was an AWFUL choice of words.
Don't try and justify it just because it's Gabe. He fucked up. It happens.
This does apply to Chell in a way, and the story made her character based on the playerbase. Such as when you start, you're basically brain dead to how the game works, just as Chell is.

He could have been less to the point on what he was trying to say, it would've been defined in a much nicer tone. Guess Gabe just wanted to get the point across in a different way then many would've expected.
