• Gabe Newell: Single-player games are like a feature film where your lead actor is retarded and autis

Told you HL3 wasn't in development.
Gaben was probably trying to make an internet-approved joke but considering he's in a top position in a big company, it really isn't in good style to take retardation and autism lightly for a joke. I can see what he's saying about single-player games (I'm assuming he's also justifying what MP development is more worthwhile and better for everyone compared to SP development) but he could have chosen a different way of going about it.
I'm actually surprised that FP haven't caught wind of this earlier. Most of NeoGAF have been flipping its shit six hours before this was posted. [editline]5th February 2013[/editline] Also, he committed public affairs suicide (ironically at a public affairs school) and this will tarnish his image drastically in the public eye, even if they understood his intentions.
Everybody needs to watch the video in context before judging, which hardly anyone seems to have done.
Holy shit he joked about the protagonist in single player games and used the ugly words "retarded and autistic"!! holy shit why should i care, why should anyone care [editline]5th February 2013[/editline] gaben is not my hero anymore!1
funfact the delay and scrapping of hl2 was not because of the leak
I was actually saying that not delaying it further was the mistake. When playing, I get the impression that the blurb 7 Hour War was a massive compromise to their original ideas and given 2 or 3 years of introspection after the leak they might have been able to put together a game that they felt exceeded the scope of their original premise.
He obviously means the character you are controlling, because its a feature film but you have to tell the main character what to do. Which is nothing to complain about. What are you all retarded and autistic
that wasn't the best thing to say.
Going off the operational definitions for retardation and autism, he's spot on with regards to the player's avatar in the world. How often do you see players' avatars walking into walls, staring into space, acting completely silent and retracted from the world? The character as written isn't meant to be that way, the player certainly isn't, but through game mechanics viewing the avatar objectively gives the impression of lack of intellect. People just get offended as soon as they hear those words being applied to people. It's shocking to hear someone use those words against a person, whether they be real or not, because it's taboo and viewed as an insult. I feel that Gabe really isn't used to talking to people in a formal atmosphere, I mean he looked tense and uncomfortable the entire time, so he just wasn't being "PC" enough in that setting and so it was shocking. Nothing wrong with it, but it's comparable to swearing during a presentation to a business, it's just not the right climate for those words to be used in such a way, and it's unprofessional.
If you haven't worked with people with disabilities or aren't close to someone with disabilities you wouldn't understand why it's not acceptable or appropriate to use words like this. Joking or not, it's extremely offensive and unprofessional. Gabe should know better.
Oh, now its about using the word anyway. Fucking facepunch always make an argument out of something. Get the fuck over it. People use words. My uncle is mentally handicapped and I've known and went to school and have even worked with them. I can still say retard and so can everyone else and theres absolutely NOTHING you can do about it so deal with it. People shouldn't be stopped from getting a point across because of dumb political correctness.
You're an awful person if you think its acceptable to call people retards.
Ehhh, im not sure, maybe. I mean yeah whenever someone uses it its often dumb and the person saying it is a fucking idiot, i dont think that makes them horrible people, though. And yeah its insulting, but its not like the n-word.
You're an awful person if you think its acceptable to call people retards.
Ever heard of context ? If a friend does something dumb and i call him "a fucking retard", i'm not an awful person. If i call a random autistic person a fucking retard then yeah, it's awful and extremely offensive.
I can say you're an awful person for thinking it's okay to call people retards and so can everyone else and theres absolutely NOTHING you can do about it so deal with it.
I don't have to deal with it because it doesn't upset me.
If you haven't worked with people with disabilities or aren't close to someone with disabilities you wouldn't understand why it's not acceptable or appropriate to use words like this.
Yes, my brother is autistic actually, but thanks for making me be bring this pointless bit of information up, it doesn't help anyone's argument.
You're an awful person if you think its acceptable to call people retards.
Well look around because it's obviously acceptable. People call each other retards every day.
I take every joke or insult towards autistic people very personally, as my brother is autistic. Hopefully he doesn't say anything like this in the future.
I take every joke or insult towards autistic people very personally, as my brother is autistic. None of these retard jokes you see on the internet are directed towards your brother.
Valve's concept of co-op multiplayer for everything is too premature at this point. I mean the only game to do this so far is Portal 2 and did anyone really care that much about the co-op? It felt lackluster compared to the single player campaign
I take every joke or insult towards autistic people very personally, as my brother is autistic. Hopefully he doesn't say anything like this in the future.
How exactly is this an insult towards autistic people ? his comparison makes perfect sense, it was necessary to get the point across, it's not a dumb and pointlessly made joke.
That's stupid and you're making yourself upset for no reason which isn't healthy. None of these retard jokes you see on the internet are directed towards your brother.
I said autistic, not retarded. Good job on associating those two.
How exactly is this an insult towards autistic people ? his comparison makes perfect sense, it was necessary to get the point across, it's not a dumb and pointlessly made joke.
It's pretty awful that you don't care how the things you say could hurt people around you. I was the same when I was 16 so I don't really want to judge you but I was an awful person and you are an awful person.
I said autistic, not retarded. Good job on associating those two.
Good job at finding ways to make yourself angry.
I don't get what's the big deal about the word "retard" itself. The words "idiot", "imbecile", and "moron" all mean similar things from a psychological standpoint, but we don't consider them to be derogatory towards the mentally handicapped.
woah what the fuck guys this section of facepunch is really irritable all I said was that I took them personally, excuse me for having an opinion

You'll just keep calling people awful human beings.
