Oculus: Rift will come to Mac if Apple “ever releases a good computer”

One of the major reasons why so little people use Linux is because there's a lot of software that doesn't support Linux. One of the major reasons why there's a lot of software that doesn't support Linux is because there are so little people that use Linux.
It's a really shitty vicious circle that needs some pioneers to solve it. Valve has already done a great job pushing Steam + games to Linux, we just need more big guys to follow.
For the record, I use Linux as main OS and I can do pretty much everything, and the only reason I have a Windows VM is for some games that just don't run on Linux, even with Wine.
Have... have you guys ever heard of this thing called a "Mac Pro"
Here are the specs:
Intel Xenon E5 (3.9 GHz), 16 GB RAM, Dual AMD D500 GPUs (2 GB of VRAM each and 2.2 TFlops each), 256 GB SSD Disk Space
Not only that, but it has a damn good wireless card, it's Energy Star 6, it supports up to three 5K displays or 6 thunderbolt retina displays, and it looks like a trash can (dur hur because it's trash).
This computer will last you many years. Maybe not if you use it for gaming, but if you're literally anyone else, and you have a lot of ca$h monay, this is perfect. Sure, it's really damn expensive, but it's at least a pretty good computer.
Also, in response to Oculus: I'll buy your goggles if you either lower the price or make something that isn't a gimmick.

Oh and I don't blame them for not supporting Macs, being that no one uses them for gaming. While OSX is great for gaming in some ways, programming games for it is a bitch. I get that. But calling Apple computers inherently bad is false.

Don't forget a lot of "industry standard" software, the biggest example being Photoshop. It's arguably an even bigger hurdle to widespread adoption of free operating systems.

If you're "anyone else," then you probably don't have any reason to have that much power. (barring the small market of serious video editors or model renderers.)
The average non-gamer would be fine with $500 desktop.

You don't need it now, but what I'm saying is that that much power will last you a good long while. I still have a MacBook that is 7 years old running OSX El Cap perfectly fine, whereas a Dell laptop of the same era would be dead by now.

*clears up misconception that mac hardware is trash*
LOL LOOK AT THIS ALL THIS SALT
honestly tho, for a business professional, this was a pretty unprofessional way of phrasing what he said. honestly if the issue is a weak gpu, then why not say something like "rifts are unlikely on macs without them getting stronger gpus" instead of the "bad computer" line. i think everybody knows macs arent bad. they wouldnt be selling at the ridiculous prices that they sell at if they were.

Are you for real? A Mac Pro is fucking €3,500. I could build a PC for €500 that will do everything a regular consumer will need for the next 5 years, then I could do it again for the same price. If the PC you go to as an example of as being 'good' costs as much as a used car you're doing something very wrong. My PC has better specs than that and it cost me just over €1,000.
whereas a Dell laptop of the same era would be dead by now.
I'm still using a Lenovo Core 2 Duo laptop from 2008 tyvm, running the latest version of Linux Mint and it's a shitload faster than my friend's Macbook from the same period running Yosemite
Also (unrelated to you mcgrath) saying that Microsoft has a monopoly when it comes to serious computing, lmao, I wouldn't call games and entertainment "serious computing". Sure, Microsoft is big when it comes to office applications and what not, but Linux is pretty fucking huge when it comes to servers, supercomputing, robotics, etc. etc.
It's also a really good OS for personal computing, just a shame that barely anyone wants to leave their comfort zone and learn something new. (The modern, user-friendly distributions are pretty much just as easy to use as Windows, though)

There's a big difference from behind the scenes between Windows 10 and Linux Mint.
iSheeps gonna get mad now!
Remembering the same thing a while back with people going "ugh, why can't my $2000 quadro beat a $160 GeForce" like each of them were made for a different thing, there were people upset+confused about the oculus software. "Uh but it's a high end FirePro! I bet those regular PC users are really fucked lol"
well, nope.
There's a big difference from behind the scenes between Windows 10 and Linux Mint.
Pretty sure it would be able to handle Windows 10 just fine as well, considering W10 utilizes resources better than 7. But yeah W10 would probably still not run as smooth as Mint
Because Windows is garbage :vs:

It's ironic that you'd bag on the price of the rift and defend a mac at the same time
I think Apple is an amazing company and I'd even call Apple a better company than Microsoft in many regards, but don't tell me you're actually serious.
The inflated price of macbooks pretty much are because of the gimmick of apple branding and nothing more.

I've got a laptop I just bought for 350 bucks off Craigslist that's overclocked and has marginally lower specs
Yeah you're really selling me buddy
[editline]6th March 2016[/editline]
'make something that isn't a gimmick'
what like the one trick pony the Mac Pro? It's feature set is entirely built around media production, but the only actual great thing Macs have for that is their intuitive and powerful software.
There's no reason for those price points, period

That's some nice alt you got there *Freezorg*.

I take it the punchline is that you're also an alt account

tbh one of the biggest reason for its price point is Brand + OS + connectors that are hyper-over priced and you can only use with that exact OS and brand
none of that is actually that special.
I take it the punchline is that you're also an alt account
No my little hobgoblin. This is actually my own original account, so you got it all wrong there.

Actually, I'd argue that some of the price of their computers is justified by the better build quality. The true crime is the price of their accessories, but that is unfortunately where they make all their money from the idiots too stupid to realise that they are being ripped off.
Seriously. £15 for a USB cable? £25 for an ethernet adaptor? £65 for a charger? Fuck off.

Build quality does not equal a three to eight fold price increase over comparable hardware
Build quality does not equal a three to eight fold price increase over comparable hardware
That's why I said "some". Also, it's the easiest (and maybe only, I'm not sure) way to run OS X natively, so if you want to use that OS, you have to buy the hardware.

Oh absolutely, that's what I mean by their only real edge being software. It's just outrageous that people will defend that alone

Less than twice for a reasonable mac pro setup, but whatever. Even less so for the laptops. Equal price pretty much for equivalent quality laptops like the XPS and HP Folio.

Ah yes, laptops over 1000 dollars, equally overpriced nonsense

Not really when you're combining good quality parts in very thin chassis made of aluminum with fantastic screens, pcie based SSD's and ULV parts.
"macs can't use this thing for something it wasn't designed to do"

just wanna point out something funny i noticed.
in every other post of yours, it says youre using a mac. but in this thread, every post is either unknown, or windows. interesting coincidence.

One thing you missed is that the mac pro uses all workstation hardware, ECC RAM and xeons. Quite important things if you're a serious video editor.
Are macs horribly expensive? yes.
Can you build/get the exact same computer for 1/3 the price without sacrificing things?
no
You guys are pretty late with the "Shitting-on-mac" fad.
I could understand if you did it 10 years ago when the laptops in general looked like shit and were pretty shit.
Nowadays there are actually no Windows Laptop with the same re-sell value, weight, build quality, screen quality or battery quality which the Macbook Pro has not to mention how stable and well everything flows together making it a extremely snappy computer. It's an excellent study computer and work computer but not a gaming computer, i have my gaming Desktop for that.
I've owned 2 Acers (Regret that), 1 Dell, 2 Asus and 1 MSI computer and sport a pretty decent gaming desktop for gaming. The Macbook by far is the best laptop i have ever used but i will never buy an iMac or Macbook Pro for gaming. People tend to accidentally focus on only hardware and have that "If the hardware is good then the PC is good yes??" way of thinking - and forget that everything with the PC/Mac has to work well with each other which gives you a reliable, snappy and fast computer and a pretty good experience using it.
Heh, another one of those "but there are laptops that have 16 gigs of ram and an nvidia mobile gpu for 1/3rd the price" threads. I looked rather hard for a 13" laptop that would outperform MBP not only by "muh mobile gtx". Anything I could find was cheaper, but would either have a sub-par display, squeaky plastic with a cheap feel to it, awful battery life or all of those.
