IIRC, there were specific models of the GPUs made for Macs.
Like, I remember there being GTX 280 and GTX 280 Mac version.
There may be a some sort of compatibility issue keeping your regular PC GPU from just working. I don't know.

Why do you need to do that? Just buy a PC

That's a bad answer to a hypothetical question.
Apple's best product are their computers and iPod's in my extremely biased opinion. Getting an iPhone locks you too much into the ecosystem for my liking.
And of course people on this forum doesn't like Apple computers because it's a gaming forum and quite frankly, and obviously Apple doesn't market their products to gamers. They instead get a good amount of developers, college students, and people who want a laptop that isn't going to shit out on them in 2 years.

even then, what do you do on a college laptop that can't be done on a much cheaper dell/HP laptop?
like you can get an ultrabook that has more battery, actual ports, and has a good screen for a fraction of what an apple air costs

It looks better, it feels better to use, and it runs OS X natively.

Like how I get criticized for my opinions about Apple concerning actual problems/critisms but people are still trying to use this as a defense:
"It looks better"
it's not just looks, they are much nicer to use. one thing alot of windows computers suck at is the trackpad.
there are alot of subtle things that apple do right, you can open the lid on their machines without having to hold the bottom half to the table for one. keychain is another, sign on to a website on an IOS device? it also gets transferred to the mac.
and they can take a decent fall that alot of cheaper laptops will just give out on.

"much nicer to use"
As someone who used macs for quite some time and still has to use them for work purposes (other people's macs, I don't own one) I completely disagree.
For starters it took Apple about 20 years to accept that the contextual menu was a "thing" and no normal person wants to be holding down a key on their keyboard just to access a fucking menu. That is stupid.
Windows allows keyboard control of menus (alt>f>etc) whereas mac still doesn't.
In terms of being nicer to use, I don't think so. There are several things that a PC is just much faster for. That is kind of a subjective quality but when any mac user sits down next to me at work and watches what I do on my computer they think I'm stephen hawking or some shit. Likewise, if I try to use someone elses mac to do shit I normally do they freak out and think I'm going to break the computer.
WRT trackpads, adults don't need trackpads. Nor do they need slimline stupid keyboards like those that Apple provides. Give me my full size, cabled mouse and my full size cabled keyboard any day and I will accomplish a fuckton more than someone cramped up on a laptop. Also I don't have to go around asking people for batteries for my shit every couple of weeks.
WRT Keychain I use services like LastPass because I don't just use the Apple ecosystem of products.
WRT anything to do with icloud or simliar--all I ever experience from this shit is a giant fucking headache. From people trying to use the Mail client on Mac OS X for serious mail usage (it simply cannot cope with even moderate usage before bugging out) to people losing their calendars and files/data because iCloud is a really bad solution. What really irks me most of all is Apple basically fucks off anyone who has the slightest amount of common sense by not showing any technical detail whatsoever when doing iCloud shit which you would expect a service to do when it comes down to your data (you know the thing that is essential for your computer usage)
"much nicer to use"

alot of people buy a mac just to browse facebook. They could have a windows machine and would still have the same distrust.
the type of keyboard or mouse you like to use is completely subjective. You don't like the chiclet stuff? that's fine. you can plug a regular keyboard and mouse in if you want. what i'm saying is that alot of windows machines have horrible touchpads in that alot of gestures don't register, it's too small, etc..
the ctrl and click can be changed in a setting or by using a different mouse.
All i am saying is instead of saying "this is bad, full stop" is try different machines and see what works for you best.
You're comparing only basic specs. You don't count things like ability to work with multi-core calculations, r\w speeds of graphics card...
And I have to give Apple credit, they know how to extract the maximum power from their hardware (due to having a limited hardware choices, to be blunt), so Windows machine and similar-specced Apple machine can't be compared.
But OSX has worse performance in most applications on identical hardware.

was it one of the trackpads where the whole thing is the button?
i know your pain if so.
I did not know suffering until I had to use a recent Lenovo trackpad for an hour.
Trackpads are just bad in general (I owned a macbook pro at one stage and it was shit too)
Solution: Pop one of these fuckers in your computer bag:

I mean really, people spend how much on computers and then rely on the shittest input technology available. I always carry at least 2 mice in my bag (a wired logitech mouse, and a wireless microsoft arc).
If space is tight because you like to carry around a bag that "looks good" then get one of these fuckers:

In all honesty I don't get anyone who ever uses a trackpad. How are you supposed to type and use your cursor at the same time like that?
In all honesty I don't get anyone who ever uses a trackpad. How are you supposed to type and use your cursor at the same time like that?
I'm not sure what you mean by this part.
Whether you use a mouse or a trackpad, you'll only have one hand free for typing.
I can't be assed carrying an extra input device when the touchpad on my laptop works just fine v:v:v

Ok great. I'm sure grandma can keep up with your speedy responses on facebook.
For me to actually "use" my computer to even half of its potential I need a separate input device.
Type also includes the usage of shortcuts etc like alt+tab, win+left/right, backspace, arrow keys, shift+home, shift+end, ctrl+x/c/v and so on. There are even far more than that that I use on a very, very regular basis that if I had to move my hands around and not be able to use my cursor at the same time it'd be like I was just using my computer for facebook.
And yes, when you're in a directory and you want to select all files it is easier to use the keyboard command (as well as navigating directories, once you are roughly where you want to be) than point around a mouse/trackpad to do the same shit.
I mean for real this is a thread about COMPUTERS--not "LOOKS NICE" LAPTOPS. If you're using a trackpad, you probably can't even play any video games properly and as such the Oculus Rift & Vive are probably something you wouldn't even know how to use even if it was plug and play.

Not sure why keyboards that have a toggle able Windows key don't have a toggle able insert key, never use the fucking thing and my god it's annoying as fuck when I accidentally press it instead of home. I didn't know people actually used insert.

What do you even work with? You make it sound like you're some hot-ass-shit power user when it sounds like all you do is switch between desktops and move files around by using keyboard commands in the windows user interface. My productivity went up when I switched to a mac a couple of years ago, but that is mostly due to the darwin kernel and me being more used to unix. The times of installing Visual Studio Ultimate gigant-ass proprietary IDEs are over.
Your obsession with people who can't be bothered to list out 25 random keyboard shortcuts as "facebook plebs" sounds every bit as ridiculous as some "hardcore console gamer" pissing off about the popularity of phone games.
Are you the guy that lists out 35 random protocols and software packages on a resume to make it sound really impressive?

No. You misunderstand. Its mostly about people trying to talk about macs being the chosen platform in a thread about the Oculus Rift--at the same time trying to justify why they use a shitty, 3rd rate input device like a trackpad.
And it is also about Mac users refusing to ever accept any criticism of their platform no matter how valid it is and acting like even though someone who uses macs regularly can do so in complete hatred of the platform. The religious defence of the platform is the funniest part, and being unable to just brush off some random guys internet criticism if you were really that happy with your platform.
The whole concept of OP is that no Apple has a powerful enough graphics card, yet I'm having to actually try and explain why if you use a trackpad you probably would never even get an Oculus Rift in the first place.

How is a trackpad bad? I find the multitouch functions pretty useful.
How is a trackpad bad? I find the multitouch functions pretty useful.
A trackpad is nowhere near as precise as a laser mouse for a multitude of purposes
Trackpads are usually located right under the keyboard meaning it is difficult to use the keyboard as well as the cursor simultaneously or in rapid succession of each other
For a large, high resolution display or multiple monitors a trackpad is nowhere near as efficient or as fast as a regular mouse
Some people prefer a physical mouse wheel and physical mouse buttons over multitouch functions
For many purposes like gaming a trackpad is pretty much a non-starter
If you're using a computer for 10-16 hours per day and need to get stuff done as quickly as possible over extended periods (weeks/months) then using a mouse over a trackpad is an absolute no brainer
A trackpad is usually present on a laptop and only available as an accessory on a proper computer. Usually my PC has around 12-16 TB of hard disks mounted at any one time (as well as 2 SSD drives)--this simply isn't possible on a laptop for the most part.
Using a trackpad means that you usually cannot recline in your seat while using your computer
Using a trackpad in design applications is extremely inefficient. Holding alt/ctrl and using your mousewheel is much, much faster than fucking around with multitouch gestures.
Trackpads stop responding (yes even the magnificent Designed in California ones), they get shitty when you have moisture or sweat on your fingers. A wired mouse works 99.99999999999% of the time.
If you're using a shitload of browser tabs (say 20-30 spread over 3 browser windows) then having buttons rather than gestures to go back/fwd/etc is quicker. So is middle clicking on a tab to close it, so is clicking and dragging a tab to where you need it to be.
You seriously couldn't think of any of those reasons yourself?
Sitting in bed or at a cafe dicking around on the internet? Ok great, the trackpad might work alright for that. Actually playing video games (i.e. Oculus Rift territory) or using a computer anywhere near what it is capable of and the trackpad is a terrible input device.
Plus if you're gonna be a nerd and play DOTA then having one of those nerdy MMO mice with 6000 buttons on the side is actually really useful. Then you can pan/tilt the camera using WASD, use abilities using keys 1-4 and use all your items just from your mouse. Makes it a heck of a lot quicker.

I don't understand what your "look nice" definition means. My laptop looks "ok" in my opinion.
The "I play games on my laptop" and "laptops will become relevant to VR" were two separate arguments.
Notice that the former is about the present, and the latter is about the future.
The games I personally play on my laptop are irrelevant to this discussion. I'm sure you were looking forward to ridiculing me for not playing your favorite video games.

What the fuck, no one ever said that you absolutely had to use a trackpad in ALL situations no matter what, of course there will be situations where a mouse is preferable. You'll notice that "sitting in bed or at a cafe dicking around on the internet" is actually how many people use their computers most of the time, and in those situations a trackpad is viable and indeed preferable because you don't need to carry around a second accessory.

Plz read the entire thread before replying with your shit.
"How is a trackpad bad? I find the multitouch functions pretty useful."
I provided a near-bulletpoint form response highlighting exactly why trackpads are bad and also provided one usage scenario that was appropriate for them.
How exactly would you complain about this when I highlighted one usage scenario which exactly fits to what you do--sitting your ass in bed and using your laptop. For a significant share of computer users this isn't an actual usage scenario.
The typical computer scenario is to BYO input, output and storage devices.
The typical laptop scenario is to BYO bed to sit in and use your laptop with.
I know which one I chose.
