You can light 2 candles and set them on both sides of your tv to replace a Wii's sensor bar. Safe enough if you know what you're doing, but not something an 8 year old should try.
My brother has done this before. It was actually pretty cool.
What does this even mean?
burns are measured in % of body burned
8% of his body was burned and it was apparently mostly or all on his chest
Why should nintendo need to comment?
That he's either dumb or REAAAAAAAALLY dumb.
Username is relevant.
why not just get an IR LED and a coin cell? it's cheaper
8% of his chest has burns on it, what else would it mean?
No, it means 8% of his total body surface area.
Why should nintendo need to comment?
because it's a common technique to fix the sensor
and it's dangerous

He's eight years old.
"but 4chan told me it'd work"
He's eight years old.
but he knew that fire emits considerable IR light but regular lamps don't? He probably found that out from his dad or something

[release]Nintendo, which manufacturers the Wii console, has been asked to comment.[/release]

it's still weird to me not to hear "get your parents permission before going online" in every other commercial
I know candles work as infared, but how do you plug a candle into the Wii?
I know candles work as infared, but how do you plug a candle into the Wii?
You don't have to. The sensor bar only plugs into the wii to get the power it needs to light up. Candles don't use electricity.
Why? Why would Nintendo have anything to say about this? Why are they bringing Nintendo into this?
I don't see gun manufacturers getting called to comment when someone kills himself with a gun, even accidentally.
And I thought He was the idiot.
You learn new things everyday :)

The boy was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea by air ambulance where he is being treated in the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery.
His family said he had undergone a skin graft from his leg to his chest.

This isn't a small burn here, his clothing caught fire.
I tried using candles as a sensor bar once just to see if it worked and to my surprise it did. However, I'd never use then all the time because that's a silly thing to do.
I just wave the controller at a lamp until it's detected because fuck buying batteries.
The evil that is video games caused this.
this is nobody's fault except their idiot child. as a parent how can you expect this kind of shit to happen? i guess they could've raised him to not be a total fucking retard but some kids are just born with it i guess
seriously how fucking stupid can you be? how does tea light + wii console = success?

did you read the thread before posting
candles work as an IR bar or whatever it's called
what the fuck? what's nintendo going to say?
"we assure you you don't need fucking candles to play the fucking game"

he's 8. there's a reasonable doubt that's not what he had in mind
I actually did the candle-for-a-sensor-bar trick once when using a projector. Works great, unless your candles are uber-short and burn out in the middle of a game...
What does this even mean?
8% of his chest is burned I'm assuming
What does this even mean?
Means you can fit 4 of your hands on your chest. (which indicates 8%) then image that all burned.
