US debt crisis: Republicans abandon vote as deadline looms

The democrat bill that didn't pass earlier had more cuts than the Republican bill, yet the Republicans still denied it.
If the country defaults and spirals into the worst depression in history because some politicians refused to compromise on something, holy shit. There's something wrong with the system when something like that can happen. I also will be appalled if any of the supporting Republicans get reelected because they're literally holding a knife to the country's throats over some god damn tax cuts.
And I will respond, with a twinkle in my eye: "I was complaining on an internet forum".
Watching helplessly.

Yeah there's a fault in the system commonly known as "republicans".
I don't know much about politics and economy, but is this in a nutshell very, very bad?
Putting it in an allegorical kind of way:
Honestly, I think this needs to happen.
American's economy is a fucked up mess, it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, raising the debt and cutting taxes isn't going to fix it, it's broken beyond repair.
If our economy wasn't so bad we wouldn't be in such deep debt in the first place.
As nice as it would be to "build from the ground up" defaulting and having our borrowing power plus the value of dollar plummet would send the US into a death spiral, not really give us an opportunity to start anew.
We were lucky to get out of the first depression as well as we did, I'm pretty sure another world war isn't going to come around and leave us as well off as the last one did.
It wouldn't be as bad as you think, yes it would be bad, but 310 million people won't just lie down and die, you're underestimating America's ability to get through tough times.
Yeah but there would still be a huge crash, millions of people would be unemployed and homeless, things would get very very bad.
I'd much rather have more time to figure out a solution than just saying "Oh well fuck it" and having the country fall on it's face and go through who knows how many years of shit.

With the current situation in Congress, we're not going to have a solution. The house, so to speak, is very much divided. And consequently, it's caving in on itself. Compromising isn't going to offer a solution, either. We tried that with the health care bill; and what we got was some kind of hybrid between the genuine good universal health care most western countries have adopted and Gingrich's plan from the 1990s. While it's functional, it's far from being what it could be- what it should be.
Furthermore, the Republicans have demonstrated quite clearly that they're not willing to compromise. The handful of meetings they've had with the Democrats and the President to discuss the matter have ended with them making all the demands and the Democrats having to make nothing but concessions. That is not how negotiating works. And when they've had this pointed out to them, they've stormed off like children. They are the root of the problem. And to think it's all just coming from their stubbornness and own selfish political interests.
We could well end up eventually like Germany did after the Great War: in a state of total economic collapse and hyperinflation. If this continues, it's certain.

Well that's depressing. Is there any hope it'll get resolved by Tuesday? I mean any inclination either side will cave to something so we at least don't default?
Are you telling me that the adult thing to do in this situation is to let Kids propose 90% of the solutions? If that's the case, I don't wanna grow up, I wanna be a Toys R Us kid.
Seriously though, If they have been coming up with solutions, LINK to them.
You can't expect someone to bother to prove their side of the argument when you have absolutely no critical thinking skills. Debating with you is like trying to reason with a brick wall. It's pointless.
You've been spouting what Fox News stopped covering weeks ago and citing nothing, but you expect us to present you with evidence for our side. Why don't you try doing some of your own research for once? If you knew anything, we wouldn't need to link you to the plans the Democrats have proposed. You are uninformed on the subjects you choose to argue and it isn't even funny anymore.
So. What's the countdown and will this mean anything to Scandinavia? I can't stand the idea that inbreds are going to indirectly fuck over our well functioning society because racecar, bible and "dem niggers".
Well that's depressing. Is there any hope it'll get resolved by Tuesday? I mean any inclination either side will cave to something so we at least don't default?
With this gridlock, it's hard telling. We'll just have to wait and see. I doubt they'll have a fully functional resolution made by Tuesday that they'll both agree on, though, much less one that will actually fix anything or make any real positive changes. Counting the rest of today, it's only four days away.

Actually it is currently love between people of the same sex, women's rights, and the TEA party that are turning them against their country now.
It's amazing it isn't called treason for how hard they are trying to run this nation into the ground.
Come August 1st, if nothing is done (there won't be anything done), Obama should step up and pull out the unconstitutional debt ceiling card. It is literally our only hope of getting out of this mess. Republicans have their heads too far up their asses to reason or bargain with, as their circus proves day after day. The can't even agree with themselves for fucks sake. We hold off until 2012, when we can get those mother fuck Republicans out, then fix this the way it should be done.

[editline]30th July 2011[/editline]
I wish i could swear like Gordon fucking Ramsay. Because i really feel that it's time someone gets extremely profane and extremely personal with the dumbshits who are too busy fucking over everyones shit to just pull their fists out the bears ass and think for a second about the situation they're fucking around with. Call me anti-American, but there's been nothing but shit from over there since WWII. One big fat egotrip.
Anything bad that happens to America's economy will have negative affects worldwide, we're a huge part of the world's economy.
Another reason to question why kids get to sit in when doing politics. I'm absolutely enraged with your political shitfest of a system. I don't have time for your special cases fucking over my life. Get them admitted and start basic education right away. The bible isn't a valid argument. How about informing everyone about that!? This is absolutely stupid. I'd be laughing my ass off if it was just America on the line, but this is all of us. I sure hope that Scandinavia will be able to largely ignore it... i doubt it.
Thank you Jesus, Glenn Beck, Fox News for encouraging religious brainwashing and voting for absolute dumbshits based on what you don't want other people to do. Thank you USA for allowing this kind of brainwashing because "religion". Thank you to the "wise" american population for doing absolutely shite to avoid this by voting for actual politicians. I can see your Two-party "democratic" system paying off now. Even CHINA has more fucking parties than you. Good job. This ragerant is as of now unfinished and it is better that it is left as such. What i mean to say is that there is no such thing as ethical thinking among people who only care for themselves when facing shit like this.

Actually the Constitution is a fantastic document it's just politicians like to bend it, misinterpret it, and generally disregard it because they're fucking useless self serving twats.

Well, Boehner is trying to get the Tea Party Congress folks in line to vote yes on his proposal, but they're saying no, and even if they do move it past the House, the Senate's already guaranteed to vote it down. If not even this is accomplished by the end of the weekend, there either won't be enough time to get it passed, or enough time to redraft it.
No matter what happens, though, public approval of the GOP definitely WILL drop because of this whole fiasco of a negotiation.
I doubt that. For years, the Republicans have been able to twist and morph facts to make themselves look better in the worse of times. Look at Fox News and how they end up turning any event that places the Republican party or any of the organizations for which it bases itself (Tea Party, the Christian church, etc) under any sort of negative light towards other sources (the "left," Muslims, etc) and makes them look like the true people to blame. Unfortunately, people who watch that will more than likely truly believe that Fox News is the only "good source of news" and will henceforth only listen to it or other conservative sources of media, such as the Rush Limbaugh show, and they will completely block out any other source of news in the name of "liberal bias."
My point being, the Republicans found a way to shine themselves into a positive light during their darkest hours before, then they'll be damn sure to do it again.
But if the talks don't go through. People will lose confidence in the US Dollar. Won't we just gradually change our "default" to, for example the Euro or Yen or something?

And then there's the issue that his plan, despite making massive cuts to nearly every entitlement program in existence, would actually be in end saving us way less than the one Reid and the Democrats have put forward, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Right back around the circle to that issue of inefficiency again.

And the Tea Party wants even more than he's proposing. There's just no winning with those people.
As a Minnesotan, let me warn everyone that if shit doesn't work real quick, we are all fucked. I bet many Minnesotans are wondering what will happen if the federal government shuts down.
oh wow, quitters

Fellow Minnesotan here, Ironically... the state shutdown affected me minimally. Expect for the state parks and the rest stops.
Whoa WHoa Whoa! Minnesota is shut down?
And the Tea Party wants even more than he's proposing. There's just no winning with those people.
When it comes down to their "agenda" (if one would dare dignify it by calling it that), the Tea Party really has no central organization or general sense of direction. They're just a loosely-grouped street movement that's made a name for itself by hosting rallies (you know the ones, where they stand out on the corners of streets in 18th Century costumes they bought at a Halloween clothing shop, reciting quotes from Reagan and Washington, waving around signs and "Don't Tread On Me" flags, shouting political slogans etc.) and spouting gobs of right-wing appealing rhetoric to garner up attention and make themselves look intimidating (kind of like those toads that live in Louisiana that puff their bodies up when a predator is nearby to make themselves look big and tough and dangerous). One branch will argue against "big government", another against homosexuality, another against entitlement programs, etc.
They belong in a circus act, not politics.

Would it be better to refer to them as "Tea Party Aligned" Congressmen?
It was shut down for a week.
Pretty fucking insane that a state's government shut down.
It was more then a week. It was... like 13 days.
Would it be better to refer to them as "Tea Party Aligned" Congressmen?
In Boehner's case, yeah, I'd have to say that describes his relationship with them better than anything else. Some branches of the Tea Party are even against the Republicans; they think all of the government's members should be gotten rid of and replaced. 'Course it's these branches a lot of times that go on the really pointless and completely unrelated tirades about homosexuality, religion, guns, etc.
