Detroit is now defaulting on its loans. The city is now insolvent and may go bankrupt.

So can someone potentially BUY detroit?
Industry isn't going to be that useful for Detroit since the developing world is flooding the market with cheaper goods. American workers are not willing to work for pennies in a factory with limited job security and almost no benefits. Workers in the developing world are.
Detroit needs to strike oil or something to get out of it's mess.
I work in an Ice cream factory in my small Michigan town. I get paid vacation, benefits, a bonus every quarter and a Christmas bonus (always $3,000+) I am so happy for my job, and the factory is growing bigger every year. So you are not completely correct.

Most large industry, like what Detroit is based off, had fled the country in search of ultra-cheap labour so they can get richer at the expense of foreign workers. Somehow I doubt Detroit will become Detroit Ice Cream City anytime soon.
You don't have to fucking dissolve the entire democratic process though. You are seriously justifying this by saying "lol well the people obviously can't pick for themselves!". These emergency fund managers also control like 80% of the entire black population in the state of MI
If the parents are unable to take care of their children, the government takes things into it's own hands.
The parents are the voters, and the children is the city government.
Please RoboCop or Sariff Industries save my city, :c, and people wonder why I say I wanna move out of here.
I've heard the police are completely out gunned and they have signs saying enter at your own will. Shits out of control, reminds me of the old west.
haven't white 20somethings moved in and bought up litterally whole city blocks to turn into urban farms

Yeah, police, fire, and EMS are pretty much nonexistent, the city is pretty much falling apart.
If Detroit suddenly became abandoned one day I imagine it'd become a heaven for urban explorers (and critters).
It actually already has enough abandoned buildings to make for some pretty good urbex.

I don't feel the voters or the politicians are doing a good job. Can I become a dictator now?

More like the first few levels of Stalker.
But with gangsters and crackheads instead of bandits.
The real problem is that while cities can grow as needed, they can't shrink as needed. Someone still has to sort of look after the roads and keep the buildings from burning down / falling over, regardless of whether or not half of them are abandoned.
A city of 700,000 is still absolutely massive but it isn't going to have enough income to look after a 2 million population's worth of stuff. It's a huge drain and the money can't go toward helping the population like it should without everything literally collapsing.
Out of curiousity: has there ever been any research by civil engineers/city planners/etc into how you would go about shrinking a city?

You are the exception and I'm envious of your job. Detroit needs more than Icecream factories though. It's going to need the return of heavy industries that can hire many thousands of workers which can't happen because of China.
Don't libertarians love privatisation?
Libertarians believe in personal responsibility, which is the antithesis to Detroit.
If Detroit suddenly became abandoned one day I imagine it'd become a heaven for urban explorers (and critters).
If Detroit was suddenly abandoned, I would get together something like 10000 paintballers and amidst the crumbling urban canyons we would have a war for the ages.

this sounds like an excellent film
I wonder is if what is happening in Detroit something that will spread all over America.
This is surprising, and sad.
If it ends up getting bankrupt, that pretty much means the whole place either becomes abandoned in the near future (which is a bad thing) or it becomes corporate owned (which is an even worse thing).
As far as I know this city might be doomed.
jesus christ, 78,000 abandoned buildings?

It's sad, but it is really not much of a surprise considering everything that's been going on in the city lately, honestly it'd be a bigger surprise if this didn't happen.

There is one heavy industry that can hire many thousands of workers, and China might just be the one to kickstart it...
[sp]You've just read the plot to the next Call of Duty[/sp]
people wonder why you'd want to move out of detroit?
Believe it or not, they do. It's usually people living in Detroit who are usually too drunk or high to care. Anybody I've met who suddenly had reality hit them (money, kids. That sort of thing) they move out of the city

Theyre not quick enough to stop some people from burning them down. It's usually seen like
House , house , empty lot, house house , burned house ,,
burned house, empty lot, burned house

And then Bethesda buys it to build a Fallout theme park :v:
It sure is a wonderful time to be working in law enforcement in Detroit. What is going to happen to me? :(
And then Bethesda buys it to build a Fallout theme park :v:
I would pay a fortune to be able to go to that theme park.
this makes me really sad, detriot was once quintessential america and theres a lot of beautiful buildings there that would look great again if restored and be put back in use
all i know is that filmmakers better get off their ass and make use of those abandoned buildings before they get torn down

This sounds like a good project to create jobs

Every paintball and airsoft group in the states would get a collective boner if that ever happened.
