Even then, has everyone forgotten about Epic Mickey?

I dunno man, just nobody knows who Warren Spector is.
Makes me sad, because these are the people who think they know what's right for the industry, and they can't recognise a master.

Warren Spector is a gaming god. He made Thief and Deus Ex for fuck's sake.
I'm guessing after others have read his title of "Disney game dev" in this thread, people automatically think he is shit. Then they regretting doing so after finding out he made Deus Ex. Also, there really needs to be more creativity and complexity in video games. Look at Call of Duty, for example. CoD4 was great, but the dramatic change in MW2 was... disappointing. CoD4(MW1) was like a great film, whereas MW2 was a Michael Bay-injected sequel (No real plot, lots of pretty explosions, overuse of special effects, pointless shootouts.)
I dont think he is saying what I want.
I just want TF2 merch.
Action figures, Food, Comics, etc. Being sold in stores.
Food part being stuff like bonk.
Mario has shitty drinks, why cant we?
So basically games need dumbing down
no thanks
did you even read what he said
do you even know who this guy is?
imo the entire industry should revert to 1995.
yeah cause games, just like comic books, are totally a genre and not an artistic medium. The author of that article totally knows what he's talking about.
Edit:
I like how he's basically referring to action oriented first person/third person shooters as games in general, because there's no such thing as an RTS, RPG or sim.

did you read the article?
and yes, yes he does. He's Warren Spector.

I don't think you can compare Videogames to Comics. The appeal of videogames is the interactivity and control. Comics are purely stories. Like books but with pictures. (lol picture books)
Anyway, videogames as we know them will be replaced one day (Hopefully) by something more advanced (Please let it be videogames controlled with your mind)

Video games are books with moving pictures.
Video games are books with moving pictures.
Yes, but their appeal is interactivity.
Also, I think you meant videogames are just interactive movies? Which are just moving picture books?
did you read the article?

Oh the guy behind System Shock? Well I still disagree with him because if you think about it it was larger than life characters that got these sorts of video games into the main stream (first person shooters/3d 1 person games in general), and Video games will never be a niche form of entertainment, I mean look at games like Starcraft and Starcraft 2, there is an entire country that plays those games, and more than the population of that country plays them everywhere else. There is also the Sims which was mentioned before and several sim games, there are RTS's besides Starcraft that a lot of people play and with more and more investment in electronics by everyone worldwide I can only see the video game market growing.
GASP!
Games with plots that are unique! No, quickly, before it stops being cool MAKE IT BLAND

people who make good content can still be fucking stupid.

skyscrapers are yurts with concrete
[editline]11:17PM[/editline]
This doesn't even make any fucking sense.
So dudes in power armor are nerdy and not mainstream but HAL derivatives are mainstream?

Holy fucking shit ignore the title there is nothing about mainstream in the sense you mean, the title is misleading and stupid. There's a difference between being mainstream and not being forced into a artificial niche market
And goddamn it his entire point is that game plots like what is known to the layperson ARE bland and they shouldn't be that way READ THE ARTICLE
I think by "niche" he means "nerdy".

Yeah, you're right. The days of video gaming being a niche market are long dead.
Warren Spector is a gaming god. He made Thief and Deus Ex for fuck's sake.
I've never played either fucking game? Not everyone has played the same games as you have. To me Gabe Newell is the God of Gaming. I didn't know what they were till recently. So I'm sorry I didn't know who Warren Spector is. And what if I'm not interested in Epic Mickey? You can't hold one person up of a media form say this is the god without someone back lashing. I'd start freaking out if other famous game developer started saying the same thing, such as Gabe Newell.

That doesn't give him a free pass. Neither does it Give anyone other influential game developer a free pass. Replace the name Warren with some random developer that no one knows. Now, would you yell at him or praise him still?
He could also be very well meaning the older generation where not everyone grabbed onto video games. I'm pretty sure my generation and the one right before mine will totally transfer video games from being niche to something like movies.
did you guys even grasp what he was talking about
there's a huge difference between films and comic books, i don't think i've ever cried from reading a comic book, yet some films hit this fantastical emotion power
the difference between what is considered the greatest comic book of all times and the greatest film of all time
he's saying he wants games to evolve to the point where they can take people and get to them emotionally instead of comic books which really don't ever ever get that far

I've gotten more emotionally attached to a simple cartoon character than any movie I've ever seen. Thats why I don't watch movies anymore...because they don't connect with me period.
I've gotten more emotionally attatched to a simple cartoon character than any movie I've ever seen.
then you should go see some movies
i'm sorry what's the comic book equivalent for The Godfather or Shindler's List?

Maus?
Maus?
Maus
Please. Even if they could be compared, Maus is far outnumbered by comic books (emphasis on comic) than serious films are outnumbered by Transformers-esque movies
Maus series...
Persepolis
American Splendor
Sunny Side Down

Regardless, it's a medium capable of emotional weight, it's just not usually used or seen that way, which is what Spector's arguing against with video games.
I'm pretty sure when he said comic books he meant like superhero comics and trash manga
he didn't say graphical novels which i'm sure he considers an art

Those are still comic books. And not every Manga is trash either, Pluto comes to mind. And hell, Sucker Punch uses comic strip animations for most of their major cut scenes.
