i kinda dont want videogames to be mainstream.
What's wrong with space marines?:smith: IMO Game developers should keep on exploring any type of plot, setting, or whatever that they want to.
It's just typical that he comes from Disney
Next person who says something in that vein deserves a swarm of boxes.

Games are new, therefore they're not taken seriously. That's really all there is to it.
Games are new, therefore they're not taken seriously. That's really all there is to it.
Games have been around for 60 years, or 40 if you don't count academia. They're not new by any definition, except perhaps compared to books or film
I think there was a Game Informer article not too long ago that argued that Videogames today HAVE become a form of legitimate art (with Shadow of the Colossus and Mass Effect 2 used as major examples). games today HAVE the potential to be recognized as what Spector wants them to be recognized as, there's no need for a MAJOR shift in development ideas. it's just that some aspects of games get in the way of that potential. for example, COD4's single player had a legitimately good storyline with a good deal of emotionally hitting moments, as did the Halo videogames. but both series' potential to be viewed as examples of Games As Art was diluted by their real selling point: Multiplayer. if less emphasis was placed on Multiplayer and more on the actual storyline, we might be seeing them in a different light. not to say that MP should have been abandoned, but it certainly should not have been placed first in both cases. hell, Team Fortress 2 is pure MP mayhem and there are a few good points for it being viewed as art. there are other aspects of games that get in the way of their potential to be viewed as "art" other than MP, of course. for example, MW2 ditched good story-telling for "here's a poorly-conceived excuse for you to kill. go kill.", and that really got in the way because if they worked a bit MORE on the story rather than spammed enemies at you at each corner, it could have been a legitimately good Single-Player experience instead of an arguably average one.
Jesus Christ how late is this guy? games have been mainstream for a long time now and tbh i like comic books just how they are without interference from casual fags who don't know what the fuck they're on about so fuck you spector!
Lol did people just compare Schindler's List to Maus up in here? Wooooooooooooow
Art or not, I read comics and play games for entertainment, not their artistic values.
I'm just surprised the majority of people in this thread don't even know who Warren Spector is, nor did they actually read the news post. Shame on all of you, except for that Xen Tricks guy. Wow, I wonder what interest a developer would have in wanting games to join the mainstream? It's not as if they'd sell more units or anything, right? In any case, I think games have evolved storyline-wise over the past few generations. Compare almost any NES-era game to today's, and there's a big difference in how stories are delivered. This title is sort of misleading since he seems to be more saying "get better storylines" as opposed to "pump out Wii games."
Notice how it's Warren Spector, one of the best/most brilliant game developers ever, who's worked on System Shock, Thief, Wing Commander, Ultima, and created fucking Deus Ex. He's also working on Epic Mickey, which despite being a Disney game has been almost universally anticipated. So he's not just a "disney game dev" :colbert: And he's not calling for making all games casual, he's saying we need to break out of the simplistic machismo oriented gametype that's been the norm since Doom and branch out to more creative areas, and work to make that creativity the mainstream
Yeah, he's absolutely right.
How the fuck do you people not know Warren Spector. Uneducated plebs.
