Since you are most likely going to get cancer because of the actions that you take, we are going to make it very expensive for you go take those actions. Then we can put the money we would spend on you to good use saving people that truly deserve it."
it's not money they're spending on us, it's money we're spending on ourselves. the government doesn't make the money that pays for our healthcare, WE do, we pay for it with our taxes and the government shouldn't be allowed to up the prices on our shit to save healthcare money that belongs to US not them
Not to mention illegal tobacco, called chop chop here in Australia, is extremely dangerous if it's not prepared correctly.
More people are just going to turn to it if they go through with this in New Zealand.

especially since shitloads of low economy people smoke and already have a hard enough time buying em
Because the government doesn't belong in my body. I'm a big boy, I can make my own decisions.
To give the benefit of the doubt, they're not saying you can't smoke, they're just making it really hard to support the habit. You could always just buy regular tobacco and roll your own.

not to mention chop chop tastes like dick.
Government, parent's parents.
I hate smokers too, but god damn. If this works, they could turn around and decide to do the same thing to booze, because hey, nobody likes drunks either.
the problem with cigarettes it's that they are harming not only the smoker, but the people nearby him
What I don't get is why they don't just make it so the tobacco companies can't put all those harmful chemicals in their cigs. Make so they are mostly pure tobacco like cigars.
I mean, I'm no expert or even that knowledgeable on the subject of cigarettes but can someone explain to me why they NEED to put chemicals like formaldehyde and arsenic in them?

so that people will become physically dependent and keep consuming them in order to maintain homeostasis

formaldehyde is a byproduct of a combustion
arsenic traces from pesticides used in tobacco farming
also, if they were made from 100% tobacco they would be so fucking expensive
so that people will become physically dependent and keep consuming them in order to maintain homeostasis
But it's the nicotine that's the addictive chemical. I don't see how arsenic plays a part in making someone dependent.

the amount of nicotine in cigarettes has been steadily increasing for years
They better be some damn good cigarettes

Ah, I see. Thanks.
They would? But if they put less shit in them it would take less resources to make and thus be cheaper would it not? I always chocked cigars to being overly expensive due to their size mostly.

You can buy cigs that have only tobacco in them, it's not like there's companies that don't do that shit. You can also roll them yourself!
so that people will become physically dependent and keep consuming them in order to maintain homeostasis
That's true, but many of the chemicals in cigarettes are put in to alter the flavor. If you've ever tasted a cigar, you would know how rough it is. Tobacco smoke is largely harsh and bad to inhale. So you add in chemicals to change the flavor. One of the most prominent chemicals in cigarettes is either chocolate or vanilla(or both), and sugar.
Also, many of the chemicals you inhale from cigarettes are not chemicals that were actually put into the cigarette. Carbon monoxide is produced from burning plant matter(among other things). Cyanide is produced through burning of certain chemicals in an oxygen deprived environment as well.
Not to mention that the curing process for tobacco can cause contamination of the product, and cause chemicals to be present that were otherwise unintended.
You can buy cigs that have only tobacco in them, it's not like there's companies that don't do that shit. You can also roll them yourself!
I suppose. Was just throwing my uninformed opinion out there to see what came of it so I'll take my leave and let the people who actually know a thing or two chat without interference. I don't want to become a bother.
You can buy cigs that have only tobacco in them, it's not like there's companies that don't do that shit. You can also roll them yourself!
Those cigarettes will still probably have most of the harmful chemicals. Like I said, Carbon Monoxide and Cyanide are not chemicals added to the cigarette, but produced when the chemicals in the tobacco burn. Also, since tobacco plants tend to be bred for high nicotine levels, I don't know how much less addicting they would be.
the amount of nicotine in cigarettes has been steadily increasing for years
That's because they are breeding tobacco to have more nicotine. The calming and relaxing rush of nicotine is the reason WHY people smoke.
this is stupid, addicts will keep buying anyway, it would be smarter to outright ban cigarettes
Otherwise, it would be like a cigar that you inhaled. For no reason.

That is even worse. That will create a black market, and we all know what happens when you do that (see prohibition and war on drugs).

Wait, that is exactly my point. The people have to pay taxes for healthcare, right? So why not tax the people with the highest chance of getting extremely sick, more?

because that's not how a society of equals works. we all own a share in the government we all pay taxes we are all receive care equally. that some people need more care than others is irrelevant!!
Let the smokers smoke.
If he blows it in your face,
kick him in the teeth.
It's called personal space folks.
The government isn't going to stand up for you 24/7, all you anti-smokers out there.

If the care necessitated by some is a fixable issue, and it saves money from being spent, I believe that the issue is entirely relevant.

as others have pointed out, if we're having a go about increased costs due to voluntary damage to the smoker or w/e then should the prices of fatty foods and alcohol and soda and shit like that should be raised for the adverse health effects they cause??
